I also have had this problem with my setup since I built it. I have attributed it to various sources but cannot identify which is the definite cause since as you say nothing is accessible without a hard reset.
my suspiicions are with the screen saver and Ibrowse, OWB, and the USB port.
Unfortunately it is such an intermittent occurence, sometimes daily, sometimes no lockup for a month, that I have learned to live with it as opposed to fixing it. I don't have the time or the knowhow anyway.

Alan Redhouse already stated that no other cpu card would work with the A1. We already pushed the boundaries when the cpu reworks were made possible along with a good supply of compatible cpu's.
But hey don't let that stop you trying.

Interesting thoughts, and many points are valid. I feel however that the divergent os's are divergent for the simple reason that the coders and porters want it that way. As you say the `Amiga' ( I include MorphOs )scene is a hobby for most of us and we choose our respective machines because that is the path we have travelled throughout homecomputing history. I started with the Vic20 for example.
If I wanted a standard I would go out and buy a PC.
I don't want a standard, its as simple as that. I want trailblazing and boundary kicking invention. Os4, Morphos, UAe, Linux, and all other non standard OS's are examples of good independent thinking, whether they will be successfull in the future who knows? and hardware is developing too fast to keep up with anyway. Even in PC land your machine is obsolete the minute it leaves the store.
I am very happy with my hobby, I am sure many others are too, and i am confident that with better access to the internet we will begin to attract more and more hobbyists.

I think in the past the lucasarts Indiana Jones series was what really got me hooked. Especially Last Crusade and Atlantis. Then of course the comical Secret of Monkey Island. Before that I had been content with text adventures, which were so laborious but very fulfilling to complete.
Nothing beats a good cartoon adventure though, and I sometimes think that too much realism is now in the games they are not so enjoyable. It is done at the expense of humour and playability.

yes ScummVM is great for rekindling the old early graphic adventures. I was particularly impressed with the playability of the Broken Sword series which was never released for the Amiga in the first place.

Which OS4.1 version are you using? Sam or A1?
Try Installing OS4.0 instead if you have it for an A1. You should at least have the OS4.0 pre-release that comes with it. Do you have the hardware priorities set correctly?

from memory only because I no longer have my A1200 tower, I seem to recall that i had to start up the HD toolbox and allow it to run through detected devices and then the icon would magically appear on the workbench. It was sufficient then to cancel HD toolbox and proceed to open the usb device icon in question.

Don't worry about file, I have deleted old Netsurf folder and re-installed from scratch.
it seems the installation sets up some mime types after setting the minimum font size and default theme.
It is working fine now.
note to AmiUpdate users: do not allow this program to upgrade your existing Netsurf installation.

Agree, no problem with freezing if options file moved to trashcan. Just need to try all options settings, may possibly be font related.
