@broadblues

I didnt know there were clients for anything other than Amiga. I am happy to give it a go - and of course, any changes come back.

I don't want to hijack your thread, but very similarly...

How about keyboard / mouse share? I'm aware of an Amiga specific program in AmiStore, but I'd like to use the same keyboard and mouse between Mac and X5000.

@white

A lot of that is not correct.

Drives are not '/dev/sd*' on Mac. They are /dev/diskNsN. In some cases it's /dev/rdisk if you want raw disk access but I'm not entirely sure what raw disk access bypasses!

Eg:
diskutil list
/
dev/disk0 (internalphysical):

#:                       TYPE NAME                    SIZE       IDENTIFIER

0:      GUID_partition_scheme                        *500.3 GB   disk0
   1
:             Apple_APFS_ISC Container disk2         524.3 MB   disk0s1
   2
:                 Apple_APFS Container disk3         494.4 GB   disk0s2
   3
:        Apple_APFS_Recovery Container disk1         5.4 GB     disk0s3

Secondly, as far as I am aware you cannot just assign a drive to Qemu without using sudo, that's not going to work unless you have first granted your user RW permission to the device with sudo (sudo chmod etc.). If it's a removable drive then you'll have to do this each time the drive is removed and re-added as it could pick up a different disk number to the last time.

On my system, I could get it pretty seamless if it wasn't a removable drive because I've added my user to the sudoers setup without password prompting so I can just run the Qemu command with sudo from a script. I wouldn't recommend that to anyone else though. I happen to be happy to accept any risk that comes along with that.

Remember, none of this is unique to Mac as Mac started life as a BSD derivative (I think still is? but don't quote me on that). So it's going to be very similar to Linux. Also I would say it's way off the mark to suggest Qemu is developed mostly for Mac systems. As far as i can tell most people developing Qemu are doing so on Linux. Mac just happens to be highly linux compatible. Certainly moreso than Windows, thanks in no small part to the "homebrew" package manager that allows Mac users to just "brew install" a LOT of Linux packages on a Mac machine. But by no means all. Oh, and the posix environment provided by Darwin of course.

To summarise, I think you're way off the mark in a lot of your assumptions about Mac.

Can you explain this a bit please? For example, a hard disk doesn't log into the system, a user does! Do you just mean you had to unmount / dismount it? Apologies, I get that English isn't your first language so I'm assuming that's what you meant. Just want to check.

Another game I'm not really sure I "get" to be honest - as someone else has said, are we meant to quite when we die or continue, continue, continue until we get to the end of the episode (which happened here)?

Anyway

Does anyone know if there's a trick to getting a joystick to work with this game? I've got a PS3 dual shock controller and the analogue stick isn't recognised. I can't use the d-pad because either it's broken (unlikely), or left isn't recognised by the entire OS. So that leaves me with no controller options outside of keyboard.

I don’t think there’s any secret to this. No magic combination that’s going to improve your performance 10 fold. Specify ppc, build it and if you didn’t get a feature that you expected or needed (like slirp) look through the configure output to find what enablements are supported for your platform and enable what you need. At that point configure may fail and tell you it needs a dependency you don’t have. Install that, rinse and repeat until you got everything you need.

There will be a few optimisations that can be set based on release vs debug. You could do with knowing them.

Sorry for lack of formatting, on my phone right now.

PS: I did build quite happily for Linux so this is based on experience but that machine is in pieces now so I can’t refer back to it.

Aside from picking the platform, I think the only other option I’ve ever specified on Mac is to enable slirp. I can check my config command later today.

Is it just me or does this game, or rather it's first level at least, seem very bugged? I can play it and never run out of lives every time. By the time I have died I'm guaranteed to have gained at least 1 extra life, 2 if the coins tally over over 99. On top of that, I get to a certain point where i have no choice but to just die by jumping into the void.

I'm willing to bet there's probably one or more invisible blocks to jump on when it comes to the end, but with the basically infinite lives situation, this will just be an endurance test of who is willing to sit through it the longest

I got bored at around 300,000 but I have a very low threshold for these things !

Qemu is line based and under MacOs/Windows there are no usable gui's that could simplify it.

As a Mac user I'm sure you probably already know this but we have the very nice emulation tool "UTM" that can either virtualise (Apple Hypervisor), or emulate (QEMU under the hood).

Sadly, I did try to use it for our needs but even when you go advanced and modify the "command line" options directly it still tries to be too clever and take ownership of too many things, inserting so many additional command line options that we don't want that it manages to break things.

It's a shame, it would be a great front end otherwise.

Re: X5000 Case Fans

Anyone got any idea what a normal CPU temperature might be to aim for? I'm assuming since it's what my stock cooler says, that idling at 63C rising to 68C on an extended gaming is perfectly fine.

The datasheet for the P5040 chip says 0C - 105C, but I'm guessing it's better not to get too hot for too long.
