Well it appears the trademark trampling has ceased now so perhaps now we can move forward with some cooperation.

As "Team Lead" I hear a lot of talk from a lot of people. Not much of it leads to actual working software. Time will tell with this one as well.

There may be an easier way of doing it, but this works.

You might want to check out DOS Notification on the wiki. This is how the system preferences work by setting up notification on the various prefs files.

Note dos.library has universal notification built-in now so it will work no matter what file system is underneath. See the DOS autodocs for more info.

Finally, you can view what notifications are setup using Ranger. Makes it much easier to test things.

Please note you need to set the stack size high before running the tinysid program - I use 2048000.

You might want to check out Controlling Application Stack on the wiki...

I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords. I'd like to remind them that as a trusted AmigaOS Development Team Lead I could be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground sugar caves.

I'd also like to see the CAMD devkit made available through AmiUpdate, but that might be up to Lylehaze?

It is an OS component now so any updates will be via the official SDK from now on.

If I remember correct there is no wbstartup directory in AmigaOS4.1 (But you might have one, its more side effect of trying excalibur, the installation script create a directory if its missing, I did not like it being removed, due to legacy.)

Now fixed on the wiki along with a few other things.

You can skip WBStartUp by holding down a key at boot. Can never remember which one though. Shift? Ctrl? Alt?

...You can also hold down the Ctrl key (either one on a PC keyboard) or the middle mouse button (if you have one); this will make the system boot without Startup-Sequence, just like it would do if you selected it from the Early Startup Menu. And if instead you hold down either one of the Shift or Alt keys (including Alt Gr on a PC keyboard), the system will boot without starting anything from the WBstartup drawer; a similar effect to what you would see if you renamed the WBstartup drawer and rebooted...

It's not a trick, it's what commodities are for, filtering the input stream.

I agree and you can find more information about Commodities and what they really are for here

There are no plans to make AmigaOS less responsive or slow it down.

If it works for your setup, it doesnt mean it works on others setups. E.g. on OS3.x it wont save 24bit bitmaps. Under AfAOS (and AROS) it is (at least was some time ago) completely broken and crashes.

This is the "AmigaOS4" section so what other platforms do is not really relevant here.

There are also various pictrue.datatype implementations/updates/sidegrades etc. out there with different behaviour. So if you want to relase your program to the public, avoid datatypes for saving.

If there are replacements for the AmigaOS 4.x picture.datatype, I'd like to work with those authors to make them obsolete.

That will no longer be necessary.

I have now merged that content into the AmigaOS wiki

I also updated some of the material for AmigaOS 4.

We are having some troubles with the server for some reason. No need for panic but services will be up/down for a while until we find a root cause.

A certain other Amiga-like OS supports safely closing the window of crashed programs, and I have to say it's probably the single feature I miss having in AmigaOS4.

I will not support such a feature because it only makes the system more unstable. Something crashed and you need to reset soon. There is no other way out.

Instead of users lying to themselves (e.g. forced closing of windows you don't own) I think it is better to remind them they need to save their work and prepare for a reset.

If/when proper resource tracking is in place we will of course support such a feature. Until then, 3rd party utilities which make your system even more unstable and potentially your destroy data will have to do.
