Re: Simple wishlist for next AmigaOS

Just popping in

I believe that the first thing of the next AOS edition, is that Workbench has to be replaced with something like Ambient or improve (e.g. dual listing, avi priviews etc) Filer and integrate it to the system.

Secondly drivers must materialize and improved: especially USB 2.0, drivers for new and faster ATI with full 3D support and a new range of supported wifi cards.

Minigl (or whatever equal we have) must also be improved.

I would like also a classic environment ready to run out-of-the-box, since Hyperion has acquired kick roms and OS3.x.

Re: Weird Runinuae Prob

@ChrisH

Hey man! Well, since I ticked "basic workbench mode" and tried to run workbench through RuninUAE, the system froze. None of the hotkeys was working. So I rebooted my Sam manually. Afterwards, as soon as OS4 splash screen finishes I get the following:

Quote:

I have an AmigaDos message saying C:Execute: object not found

Then a Preferences message: Can't load picture "Work: blablabla".

I click Continue.

Then a new Preferences message: Can't load picture "SYS: Prefs/Presets/Default/Common/patterns/smallerw.png".

I click continue and a new System request: Intuition is trying to reset workbench screen. Please close all windows except drawers.

While another message says "Hint: Basic Workbench mode is enabled!"

When I close all screens, a pure white backdrop appears without any icon/partition that doesn't respond to anything.

Yesterday, I made a small effort and I booted with no-startup-sequence to have a look. For sure I boot into OS4 (cause it says Hyperion Entertainment copyright and such).

I typed ed s:startup-sequence. It look normal to me (couldn't find any mention for diskimage nor RuninUAE, same goes for user-startup). Still on the upper (first) line of startup-sequence it says "Failatline21". What does that mean?

Btw, I deleted from s: a script that was called "runinuae-basic workbench", or something and now I don't get the message "Hint: Basic Workbench mode is enabled!". I also deleted a script called "runinuae".

I also deleted diskimage from Devs, Runinuae from my installation folder (work:Runinuae).

Still the problem continues. All I get after the above errors of Preferences finish, is a pure white wb on reduced resolution, without any functionality (no icons, contex menus, etc).

Please, do mention, how the problem can be fixed by the shell, if it is no problem to you.

I agree with your points. How will I remove diskimage from wbstarup where I cannot enter a working wb session?

Weird Runinuae Prob
Just popping in

Here is a weird problem I am facing. Most probably it has something to do, with one of my settings, but still I can't understand how to fix it / what caused it.

I have a valid AmigaSYS3 (latest r.) HDF, heavily modified, on my WinUAE. Runs well and fast.

So, I copied the HDF via a usb (along with kick3.1.rom / kick1.3.rom /key.rom and an eight GB folder full of whdload games) to my Work partition (DH1:)

I mounted the HDF via DiskImage (latest version on OS4Depot, after initial installation made a reboot) and saw a new partition called "System" on my Workbench. I clicked on it and saw my AmigaSYS3 in order.

Installed the r3 Runinuae (copied the amigfx, when prompted for WB3.1 I pointed the mounted HDF). Installer didn't mentioned any problems.

So, first thing I did, was to reboot but I forgot to unmount the HDF. After reboot, Amidock complained about missing some icons (e.g. OWB). Half of my AmiDock icons were missing although the address they should point to was correct.

Perhaps, this is caused by the two "System" partitions I have (1 the default of OS4 and 1 the mounted HDF ASYS3). After I unmounted the HDF and rebooted, AmiDock worked correctly.

Then, I tried to make some tests. Tried to bring up WB3.1 from right click on the Amidock's Runinuae but got a note that UAE isn't responding. I quited UAE. I enabled "basic workbench" option and tried again. I waited a couple of seconds and apparently the system hang. So I made a soft reboot.

And now, the real problem. OS4 doesn't boot! First, the whole look, looks like OS3.1 (colors etc, except the pointer that is just like in OS4).

I click continue and a new System request: Intution is trying to reset workbench screen. Please close all windows except drawers.

While another message says "Hint: Basic Workbench mode is enabled!"

When I close all screens, a pure white backdrop appears whitout any icon/partition that doesn't respond to anything.

LOL wtf, did I do again?

PS: I rebooted, hold down both mouse buttons and checked that the HDF image ASYS3 is NOT mounted (or at least it doesn't appear to be).

USB Drops

Just popping in

While the severe attack of the stux worm is ongoing and it may look as prime time for OS4, due to not be in beta stage anymore, taking market share as No1 Nuclear embedded OS in factories of Iran, I have a bigger problem to solve.

I booted my speed daemon, aka SamEp667Mhz, and both my keyboard and my mouse seem to drop (however I don't get any error message).

The story is as follows: I have the devices connected to the correct ports as listed in the Sam manual. The UBoot recognizes both devices. After the AmigaOS splash screen both devices are powered (red light in the MS optical mouse and keyboard leds).

After 30 sec in Workbench, both stop responding and the lights went off.

I replugged the usb cables at the same ports and they powered up once again but after 30 secs again they stopped.

I switched them ports and after 30 secs again they stop responding.

I rebooted (hard/soft) while experiencing the very same behavior.

Any thoughts?

edit: I have AmigaOS 4.1 U2

@Mrodfr

I faced the same prob last weekend. Bought a 2.5 inch 250GB external usb which I wanted to use as movie storage device plugged later on a dvd/bluray desktop. I plugged the drive to my Vista box first and found out that was formatted as ntfs. The only program that did the job is called Fat32Formatter (even Acronis Enterprise Suite failed, lol). You can download it for this site -> http://tokiwa.qee.jp/EN/Fat32Formatter/

To add to the above, CUSA, is making more damage to AROS than good when mentions its name. Without proper support a la Red Hut, Suse etc it just looks AROS will get used as trojan horse among ex-amigans at the time AROS was gaining respect from the widest range of our community leaded by respectful people.

Hyperion, should have seen it coming upon settlement. Since they didn't acquired the AMIGA name, then anyone else could license it be it for computers, cars, hi-fi or toilets.

I can't understand the hostility in taking legal measures against an "Amiga PC". Although I fully understand the frustration to the customers which the above will lead into. Moreover, the Amiga PC will be as Amiga, as the Chinese Terron boards were.

Perhaps the X-1000 will be the last PPC machine built running AmigaOS. Perhaps not. But finally someone must understand that producing a 2.000 Euros custom machine (that lacks more than hapf of the power when placed in contrary with a x86 2.000 Euros computer) is not the way to speed up development nor to attract new blood.

As for AROS, well, whoever has used it, can understand that it is years behind AmigaOS (and MorphOS). Giving it for free with a PC64/AmigaPC won't attract thousands of regular customers / developers. Also, CUSA hasn't an scheme for improving development through hiring AROS devs/coders and a 3.000 euros gift (if that ever going to happen) each year won't change its functionality level either. On the contrary AmigaOS, in its present level, would be useful running in fast, cheap x 86 with a custom chassis AmigaPC.

Time will tell of course, but please, no more under GHz, no L2, Altivec, slow RAM, in extreme amounts of money.

Hey, this is exactly what we were discussing in our local/national forum and found it odd. I will check the version of MPlayer (mine doesn't even recognizes the format, leaving a blank folder where my files are), when I come back at home from work.

3gp Video playback at OS4.1

As the title suggests, I want to playback some videos I have recorded through my mobile phone (LG Arena / KM 900). The format is stored as 3gp. I have already tried MPlayer and DvPlayer, but none recognizes the file(s). I have installed the plugin of TuneNet for amr support and although the files are being recognized I cannot even listen to anything.

I don't want to mess with any converter (free or not), I seek just a native way for video playback utility/codec etc.

Not trying to rain anyone's parade here, but the other night, I happened to gave a try on Moebius Skies (or something like that, the first game that was uploaded to OS4Depot and was utilizing PyGame). Well, my SamEp667Mhz/512Ram should be reaching around 3-4 fps in default window mode (totally unplayable). So, either, I must have done something wrong or the engine/python/pygame needs a huge optimization before implementing new libs etc.

OK, the problem has returned for good. I have taken a screenshoot http://img197.imageshack.us/img197/4589/stefk.jpg . If anyone has any suggestion what to do next I would be delighted to hear.

Also, I can confirm that AmiUpdate looks affiliated with all this frustration (although I cannot understand why and I am not absolutely sure about it!). When I first installed it (the latest version), I scanned and updated some of the components. When I rebooted I got the error in the Network log output as seen in the screenshoot. After a hard reset the problem has been removed. Two days after I scanned and updated again, in the next reboot the problem has returned and remains even since.

@m3x

Hello, thanks for answering!

I was referring to the onboard passive cooling of the Radeon 9250 128MB PCI and not the onboard M9 64MB. If I do not unistall it, I cannot install the zalman passive cooling.

Still, I will take your advice and not touch the on board passive cooling of the M9. How about to the cpu one? Can I install an alternative? If yes, which?

Anyway, seems you are familiar with the Sam, can you please spend 5 mins from your time, checking the links with the components I am reviewing?

Thanks in advance!

Cooling down SamEp
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hello, I am thinking of adding some cooling components in my SamEp440. I don't have any particular problem, I am doing it for the fun and to see how much I can bring down the heat in my case (40 degrees Celsius right now). I am using a Thermaltake M40 and I am about to add 3 8.00mm fans in the next couple of days + 5.25'' bay interface to manipulate all of them.

Moreover, I am thinking of adding the following:

1) THERMALTAKE CL-R0029 RAM ORB COOLER ( http://www.thermaltakeusa.com/Product.aspx?C=1306&ID=1810 )

Question: Will this work with the current RAM of the SamEp? (which isn't soldered on board btw). If not, which RAM cooler should I buy?

2) I will be buying ATI Radeon 9250 graphic card from here http://www.acube-systems.biz/index.php?page=hardware&pid=6 .

Question: Will tis VGA passive Cooler work with http://www.zalman.co.kr/eng/product/Product_Read.asp?idx=137 ? It seems that it is installable to any gfx bearing holes. However, I am not sure. Also, how do I uninstall the on board passive cooling from the gfx?

3) From this picture http://www.efunzine.com/efnz.php?a=po ... 0a0c2fd51f989ddd83fbc0505 you have a clear view of the SamEp.

Question: In which chips is it safe to add the following copper components http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/enmofocomohe.html or/and this http://www.thermaltake.com/product_in ... 001331&name=EHC+250&ovid=

4) In this picture http://www.vesalia.de/e_sam440ep.htm you can see the Sam with the on board gfx/cpu passive coolers. How these can be unistalled and what is the best alternative buying better/more expensive passive coolers?

@Rigo

The above files were generated through Prefs/Internet. I didn't call the Wizard. I just went to Prefs / Internet and the Internet Prefs show the following: Name: PPC440EP_ETH, Driver: ppc440ep_eth.device, Unit/Port: 0, Type: Uknown, Configuration: DHCP.

However, I went to Devs/NetInterfaces, deleted both files which I quoted above. I called the New Connection Wizard chosen LAN, Automatic configuration etc. It did assign again IP, DNS etc successfully like always.

The new NetInterface is the following:

# DEVS:NetInterfaces/PPC440EP_ETH
# File generated by Dialer 53.2 (3.10.2009)
# On Friday, 23-Jul-10 at 01:05:33
device=ppc440ep_eth.device
unit=0
configure=dhcp

So, I will wait and reboot the machine a couple of times to test it.
