Re: OS4.1 Update 1 problems & solutions

@Geoshaper

Yep, good solution. I thought about this in theory as a "backup strategy" if something with the normal boot/re-boot wouldn't work. BTW I did the setup in more or less two steps, first bootup with Update CD into the OS4.1 "Live Workbench", quick formatted the "old" OS4.1 system disk and rebooted AGAIN into the Update CD - and eventually installed the update onto the now empty system partition. Lucky me, everything came out nice...

EDIT: All "boots" and "re-boots" were COLD boots actually...

@xenic

Huh? It works the same as on a OS3.x setup: You need a valid WWFonts env variable and can use the "InstallFonts" from the Wordworth/Tools drawer to make WW aware of the fonts...

Re: TCP/IP Printer on Sam440 ?

@tlm

The "Host" should be the host where the printer is attached to! So it should show the name of your linux machine - I usually put the IP adress there (I *don't* use DHCP but static adresses here...).

For testing purposes I would *first* try the OS standard printer drivers - if everything's working then I would try to setup Turborint. BTW: netprinter.device is really nice but overall does the same as lpr.device - even the env:-config variable is more or less the same.

Here: http://aminet.net/comm/tcp/NetPrinter.lha

Re: WBStartup Arexx port or similar?

@Raziel

No problem. Write your script to S:ARexx, give it an icon (with start with "ARexx", "C:rx" as standard command), select it WBStartupPrefs. This is it.

The only thing you have to obey to, is to write to the SAME file (read: same file name) every time you write your script. This way your script is started ALWAYS on boot up. If you want to do nothing during startup then you have to write something, that doesn't do anything in your script...

Re: OS4.1 Update 1 problems & solutions

Another strange behaviour - maybe this was reported before...

I have a bug in the new ASL requester feature for "multi assigns":

1. fresh boot - compositing has to be enabled.
2. open Workbench menu "Execute command".
3. in the new window use the button to open the ASL file requester.
3. hit "Volumes" to see the list of your volumes and assigns in the ASL file requester.
4. double click a "multi assign" (here f.ex. "LIBS").
5. a popup window with the list of the corresponding (multi) assign appears.
6. Do NOT click at one of the possible assign entries, but try to move/resize/whatever THIS popup window -> instant freeze of the system!

I can reproduce this bug even with a fresh booted OS4.1 Update 1 CD!!!

If I turn compositing on Workbench OFF it works as expected with no problems (from my HD as well as on the "live booted" Update 1 CD).

My system is a sam440ep. Can someone else reproduce this bug?

Maybe I did not dig deep enough, but: If the SE version is a special version for the OS4.x SDK - where can I obtain the "full version"?

@cha05e90

Ok, here is the reply to myself: Despite the fact that both AmiDVD and FryingPan report my DVD writer to be able to write DVD-R media and both did the run with "test mode" enabled - it won't do it. Went out, buyed DVD+R media - worked! So I define this writer as a DVD+R writer. Sigh.

It *can* work - but you have to analyse the data structure and all scripts etc. on the CD and change them if nessessary.

Burning DVD-R with AmiDVD

Hello,

I tried to do some backup with AmiDVD but I toasted at least 3 DVD-R now.
After making an image file and starting the actual burn AmiDVDs output window tells something like this:

...and the burning stops after approx. 2% with "Error". I use rather expensive media (no no-name stuff) and the DVD writer is a TSST Corp. CDDVDW - a similar model in my Dell notebook works flawless. AmiDVD burns CD-R by the way without any problem.

What can I do/test/...?

EDIT: BTW the burning with "Test" enabled worked - no "Error" here and it ran to 100%.

Yep. I understood kas1e's question as a look for help with PNG images as "raw material" for OS4 icon design.

Re: How create png icons on os4 ?

@kas1e

ArtEffect loads and saves existing alpha channels of png images - it is not that straightforward when it comes to *manipulate* alpha channels. I use it mostly for sizing png images with alpha channels AND to make an alpha channel if an image do not have it. This can be done by the masking tools of ArtEffect and generating an alpha from this mask.

I find it far easier to really *manipulate* alpha channels with Photogenics5. You can even load *any* image as an alpha - so this might be your friend: Make the channel you like (i.e. colour it yourself or invert the existing one) and load it to your png of choice in Photogenics. Voil?.

Maybe this can be done with ArtEffect, too - but I didn't find an easy access to this...

EDIT: BTW - if you change your white alpha channel to a black one you will not see anything from the picture afterwards - or is it only a part of the image you want to "mask out"?

EDIT II: ... you don't need Copy2Icon for making *real* icons - you can use any existing app/project icon, use the "info" from wb menu and hit RAmiga-L (for loading an image), load the png image, save.That's it. You can even do this seperately for the selected icon state. You must have the png icon plugin installed, of course.

@kas1e

Interesting that nobody mentioned ArtEffect 4. I use a mixture of ArtEffect 4 which nicely works with PNG incl. alphachannel and sometimes Photogenics 5 for changing/manipulating the alpha. Adding glow effects and "emblems" with the PNG_Icon_Editor.

@afxgroup

As you already explained on AW.net: Phython is the coming script language for AmigaOS. So there might be no problem with SQL here - I'm thinking about a bounty for

- Python/ARexx wrapper - for all those existing ARexx ports in applications.

- Some GUI toolkit for Python (al? RxMUI, Tritonrexx, ...).
