Re: Aquaria Crashing all the time on sam44ep (mini-itx)

It would seem I have a problem with swap just not working on my sam440ep, as disabling deleting the swap partition stops Aquaria from crashing randomly.

I reported in a different thread that swap did not seem to work on my system in the past but I was informed I was just not testing if correctly.

I have tried creating a partition in different locations on my disk and even doing a clean install of OS4.1 update 1, 2 and 3 in a new partition and creating a new swap partition as documented in the release notes, but all it does in make applications crash at random

@Raziel

Thanks for the advice I will check my SWAP settings when I get home from memory I have a 2GB SWAP partition, but I may try deleting it and recreating it with the same settings as you are using to see if that resolves my problem.

OK I set the stack to 10000000 from the shell and started the game and left my game running and as normal it crashed as normal in under an hour without me interacting with the game so I would not expect it to have to load any new sections or data other than music and the music continues even after the crash window is displayed.

That should NOT be necessary, as Aquaria makes backups of your old files. So a little renaming is all that is needed.

Also, I don't know if Update 2 & 3 contain all the files that are replaced by Aquaria, so reinstalling from Update 2 might not work. In short: Please try renaming the files Aquaria backed-up for you.

Yes I actually did that first then re-applied the updates in case I had missed something, but it made no difference to my problems with the game crashing sadly.

The games stack which is 8000 in the icon or the Workbench stack which is set to 64K in the sys:Prefs/Workbench?

or both?

@afxgroup

OK It still crashes for me in the same way using a fresh extraction of the game on a JXFS partition

could you try on another file system?

Yes I have have about 24GB's of unpartitioned space at the end of the disk I was keeping back to install AROS PPC at some point in the future.

My Systems: partition is SFS/00 with OS4.1 update 3 installed and my Programs: partition with Aquaria installed on it at the moment is SFS/02 formatted and has a block size of 512, how would you like me to setup the new partition to try using?

OK installing Update 2 + update 3 has made no difference if still crashes.

Even if I just start a game and go away and leave the computer while I do other stuff I will return to find that Aquaria has crashed on my system.

@afxgroup

Yes I have SWAP enabled as far as I can tell but I have never really been able to test it works properly.

I am also still playing with the included game files from the download and not the full version I have purchased but I am not 100% sure which files to copy over and I did not want to make the game less stable by coping the wrong files are there any instructions as to which files I need to copy I have read the readme but I am still unsure if I just need to copy the data directory or if I need to copy other files as well.

@ChrisH
I just run the installer not accounting for the fact that it uses SOBJS libs that dont seem to be version controlled in anyway so you have no idea which files are a latest version, we seem to have developed windows 3.1 dll version hell all over again.

Oh well I think I will reinstall update 2 and 3 when I get home tonight and see if that makes Aquaria any more stable on my little sam440.

From what I have played so far I am still a bit unsure of what I am meant to be doing but some how still having fun

Maybe I am running out of normal ram rather than video ram then. Odd that it works for TiredOfLife but crashes for me quite quickly.

@RIBDEVIL
Using an SFS partition here as well.

Just tried reverting to the standard OS4.1 update 3 libs but still crashes in the same way on the same instruction, but as it crashes in different places on the same instruction it looks like some sort of code issue of some sort.

[Fixed by Update4] Aquaria Crashing all the time on sam44ep (mini-itx)
Just popping in
Just popping in

Has anyone else with a sam440ep mini-itx been able to play the OS4 version of Aquaria under OS4.1 Update 3 without it crashing all the time.

So far I have tried dropping my workbench screen mode down to 640x480 16-bit with Compositing disabled without fixing the issue.

If you are using sam440ep_setup, then try disabling it (do a hard reboot to ensure it's effects are cleared). Also, is your Sam440 sufficiently well ventillated? Try disabling everything in your WbStartup, by holding Shift while booting.

Admittedly I have not used Aquaria for long, but I did get to the first "black transition" (where I assume it is loading a new level).

I already removed that when I installed update 3 or I would not be typing this on my sam440ep as the keyboard would have stopped working as soon as I started OWB-MUI and as of yet I have not made it to the first loading section without a crash.

Started new thread here http://www.amigans.net/modules/xforum ... hp?topic_id=5038&forum=11 so this one can stay on topic about the special offer.

Edit: added link to new crash thread.

t's currently going very cheap as part of the Humble Indie Bundle. You just need to make sure you pay above the average price (which is currently $4.12 = £2.64 !).

The deal runs out near the end of Tuesday...

Thanks for posting the link.

I purchased the pack to support the developers and also get the registered data files to use Aquaria under OS4 as I expect the files included with the OS4 version are from the demo version rather than the full release.

@All
Now for my problem Aquaria does not seem to be veryt stable on my sam440ep mini-itx. So far it has locked up once on the menu in game (possible a known issue going by the readme) and also DSI on me after just a few minutes of play.

As my sam440ep only has 512MB or RAM and 64MB graphics onboard I dropped my Workbench screen done to 640x480-16 bit and turned off compositing but that did not stop the game from crashing, are other sam440ep owners having the same problem or is it just me?

The next question is how do you treak the CD-ROM settings for better performance as it would seem playing back the videos from CD and loading data is slower on my sam440ep even with DMA switched on than it was on my A1200 Tower even with 2500 buffers for cd0: ?

Or do I just need to try turning the CD's into images and running that way as at lest that will reduce the seeking time when accessing the video's from disk.

@Raziel
Yes turning off compositing and changing my workbench screen
to a 16-bit one fixed the graphics corruption issue for me.

But it did not fix the all WarpOS PPC applications I have tested crash after just a few minutes issue on the sam440ep mini-itx systems. So I can only been able to play the slower 68k version with 1/4 screen videos but that at least has been stable for the 15 - 20 minutes I have had to play and test the game so far.

Which version are you using ? The 68k one or the PowerPC one ?

On AmigaOS4 (AmigaOne), I can play the game using a 16 bits screen (without compositing or any effect) and using AHI (I had to install the petch version of RTGmaster by the way).

On Classic, I remember I could play the game too (PowerPC version) but your sound trouble reminds me of an AHI problem.

There is a tutorial on Amiga-NG (but it's in French, sorry : Link )

Thanks for posting the link after doing a google translation to English http://translate.google.co.uk/transla ... bih%3D1059%26prmd%3Dimvns

It sounds like I should finally be able to get this game working on my sam44ep with out graphics corruption.
