Re: How interested in the PS3 for OS4 are you?

@billt

I have my A1 for desktop use aswell and also really misses an Amiga Laptop.
But i would also like to see OS4 on my newly bought PS3 and would certainly buy a copy if/when it becomes available.

Having access to OS4 in my living room would be nice for when my GF uses my A1. I also think a lot (thousands, ten thousands?) of Ex-Amigans would give OS4 a try if it was available for the PS3 and priced just below game price.

IMHO Amiga and Hyperion should have released that version long time ago.

As a user I don't have much interest in PS3. I've got a desktop tied to a desk, I don't have much use for another, which is what the PS3 would be. I do want a laptop, which ps3 doesn't help with.

As a developer for OS4, there could be a few useful things to it. It's got bluray and HDCP, so one coule potentially use this as a platform to create players, drivers, APIs, secure data transfer stuff, etc. to play HD movies. I'd still prefer a laptop though. I'm really not likely to buy any more OS4 hardware that's not a laptop.

@spotUP
Thanks for the small progress report, nice to hear things are progressing well.

@Thread
When I get the time I will add a link from the bounty site to this thread and use that as a information/support thread. That will be an easy way to keep information updated and a good place to ask questions (that spotUP hopefully can and have time to answer)

@Controller
I have no plans to do status reports on the bounty page itself, only update the amount donated. So you have to settle with the information you get via this thread. Btw. If you decide to make another donation I will donate the same amount (up to EUR 20), we have to get the bounty beyond 400 EUR don't we

@All

Just updated the Allegro bounty site with the last few donations. Remember even though release is near it is still possible to donate a few $$.

We have reached 318 EUR so far and release is pretty close AFAIK

As it was ofcourse available for ubuntu I just played a few levels and it is actually quite entertaining. With the lack of RTS games for OS4 this one would be great to have.

@ikir
I agree with most of what you said, only problem it that IMHO it seems Amiga Inc is turning their back on Acube.

To me it seems like they want everything inhouse or as close to that as posible. I honestly think they intend to do something this time and also believe we will see the hardware from ACK.

Like a newcomer wrote on AW it is important for Amiga to get a little control on the market again. to many solutions (MOS,AROS,UAE,OS3+,OS4 + all the dif. hardware) make people confused.
Personally I just don't like the way they are doing things even though they need to do something.

What would have been wise IMHO, was to let Acube release the OS for classic PPC and SAM. Hyperion would then get some revenue from these sales and meanwhile Amiga would have time to talk to each of Hyperions contractors and negotiate something for the future.

Amiga would have lost an income from the ClassicPPC and low-end ACK boards but would have had OS4 out on hardware much much sooner and still been on good terms with the developers! They could even have OS4 prepared for the dual core systems during the 7 months until it's release.

As I see it now if when Amiga Inc wins the courtcase it will take a long long time (or cost a lot of money!) before they get OS4 up to the level where it is now. As they will clearly not get all sources.

It's nice to see Amiga doing something but they do it the wrong way by stopping all developments.

If this board comes with OS4 as I know it from my A1-XE-G4 I will buy one.

If it comes with any other developments called AmigaOS4 I might buy it after I have been able to try out that OS on my A1.

Personally it wouldn't be a big chance for me to buy such system as it can always be used for Linux which I use on my laptop anyways.

Hope the lawsuit ends really fast and IF Amiga wins they have the guts (and $$) to contact all who worked on OS4 and make them do contract work (for real money) for AInc.

Still I miss something portable in this productline, either a real laptop or some cool gadget (with good battery time) that could be placed in a dock making it a real computer.

I would have preferred that over the low-end model, which I guess is better than nothing.
--------------------------------------------------------------
This would have been my dream productline.

A small portable console/PDA/videoplayer that could enter a dockingstation when you're at home. Something ala GP32, to sell cheap to the masses, dockingstation optional. It could even run AA/DE or what ever it's called ;)

A laptop like computer, low speed, low cost, great batterytime! (sell it with a small cut down Linux distro aswell). This is what I have been wishing for the last many years.

OS4 for PS3, because it's sold in millions and it would be great advertisement for the other products.

The ACK high-end board. Makes a nice fast desktop!

@nubechecorre

Not much to tell I'm afraid.
Marcin is working on the MOS version. He doesn't have room for the A1 at the moment as he still attends university.
In June (IIRC) he will be moving home and get the A1 so he can start work on the OS4 port.

@Mikey_C

Well there was this buy back clause that Amiga state they used. I find it weird that it was even there as it was not that much money needed to buy it back.

Even if Amiga wins and Hyperion has to hand everything over, who's to continue development of AmigaOS. I doubt many of the original authors of OS4 would be interested.

Also will Acube even be interested in wasting time on a company that is constantly suing their partners, who else should deliver the hardware... ack?? Guess I cant wait that long.

Hopefully Amiga Inc have solved the problems with Hyperion by now.

I dont find the alternatives to working with Hyperion very promising and personally I probably wouldn't buy any of it.

Also I want to see the SAM board get a license, soon!

Not too shy to talk

@A1200

If YOU could just stick to the topic instead of whining about "all" the PS3 threads that would be nice.
It might even help reduce the number of PS3 threads on the different forums. Is it a problem to you that some people are interested in the combination of OS4 and PS3?

The title of this thread says what it's all about..
if you are not interested in discussing PS3+OS4 as a combination why enter the thread?

This thread CAN'T be a real problem to anyone, but the lack of respect for the author of the thread annoys me. I can see a lot of irrelevant bit..... going on here that should actually have been deleted by the mod IMHO .

@Severin + Helge
Title clearly says this is about PS3 and OS4 so just avoid the thread if your not interested (which it seems you are anyway).

Personally I think OS4 on PS3 is fun to discuss and its nice to hear peoples pro and cons for a PS3 version of OS4.

@Helge
I think it would supplement the SAM board but also take a few sales away from SAM.
You say you dont need a new HDTV and I know many feels like you atm, then clearly the SAM board is for you.

@Atheist

Quote:
Amiga Inc. has no funds to make a custom MB. How do I know? They didn't make one. There's the proof.

I never asked Amiga for hardware, I want them to change their ridiculous licensing scheme. Whether they have the funds or not to make hardware themselves is irrelevant as they are not interested in anything but software.

Quote:
I went to power.org. That place is a joke. I asked who has a MB available and the only people that did, were also the only people I'd rather open negotiations with the devil, before I talk to them. Apparently, TO THIS DAY ibm and motoyoyo have nothing in the way of a motherboard/support chips available for CPUs they would desperately like to see in millions and millions of homes. They're so pathetic.

Quote:
This is the FIRST AOS4.x friendly MB available, let's see what happens.

What does OS4 friendly mean? Efika could have been an option or if you really want to avoid Genesi, Sony produces the PS3 in millions which could have been a target IF Amiga wanted to.

Quote:
Do they? I've not been told about this. I have no clue how far and wide it may be. I do know this is the first MB available as Amy '05 was the hugest let down, having NOT APPEARED at all.

You haven't heard about a dispute between Hyperion and Amiga over ownership of OS4!?? Lets just say that they do not agree.

Quote:
Gee, wonder why they never told us they don't have a license? HOW could they ever have gotten one, considering they DO NOT have a motherboard anyhow?

This is where Amiga Inc begins to show their unrealistic demands for the Amiga market.
1. "We wont work with any companies unless their budget/income whatever is at least $$$$$ a year" 2. Hardware companies must first create the motherboard then see if Amiga is interested in selling a license for OS4. It just doesn't work like this, especially not in such a small market.

Amiga could easily take a meeting with a manufacturer (or distributor) and write down some requirements that need to be fulfilled before you would be granted a license. Instead the require to see finished hardware before selling a license. Crazy, especially when you consider how they completely ignored any kind of check on the faulty A1 boards!

If SAM doesn't ' get a license today or at least very very soon Amiga is doomed and soon to be history.

Re: Amiga - What next?

Well I'm not giving up just yet..

Thing that annoys me is mainly Amiga Inc not doing ANYTHING to advance the platform, instead they are the MAIN REASON we are left without developers and users.

So they have a dispute with Hyperion but unless they leave that running in the background there will be nothing left to have any dispute over.

IMHO Amiga Inc should have ensured basic stuff like Browser, office package, Java and other stuff was made available during the OS4 pre-release period.

Bill is full of nice words and he even talks about some of the above mentioned applications saying they have it ready but wont release it yet.

I had my doubt back when I started talking with Marcin about the Sputnik port because I wouldn't find it very funny to have asked people for money and then see Amiga Inc release Firefox or whatever browser it is they claim to have ready fully working.

I wrote Bill about my concerns (at least 4 mails) and asked a little into whether their browser was commercial or freeware/bundled with the OS and I heard nothing. Then I decided to move on with the bounty and so far haven't regretted that as Amiga Inc is still in total silent mode.

Still I find their missing replies to be lack of respect for people who wants to do something for the platform.

If I had the money I would buy Amiga Inc and fire everyone. then hire someone who had a record of actually delivering REAL products and knowing how to work with other people and companies.
