Shell and KingCON
NotePad
Web Browser
FinalWriter 97
AmiDVD and MakeCD
AmigaAMP or TuneNet

I have the following Web browers installed on my system:
Aweb, IBrowse, NetSurf, OWB 3.31, OWB-MUI, TimberWolf

I use mostly NetSurf, OWB 3.31 and OWB-MUI.

For email, I use a web browser to access my webmail account.

For sending email, I sometimes use AWeb (mailto) or my own sendmail program.

I have lots of other stuff installed but these are the ones I use most these days.

Done. I was somewhat surprised that they wanted a password with upper and lower case. Well mine should be secure enough now if I can remember it.

I tried the internet wizard once a long time ago and ended up with a mess. I had to setup manually. Ever since that time I have configured manually. Never used the wizard again. I use DHCP on all the computers at home, including my MicroA1.

Re: USB devices that work with OS4.1 Update 2
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

Today I came across another USB stick that might fall into the untrustworthy category. It is a generic USB stick issued under the brand name of a large grocery store chain called Safeway. I do not know who manufactures this USB stick. OS4.1 Update 2 detected it as a 2 GB USB stick. I tried to use it to back up files, the transfer froze part way through. Now it is permanently in an "uninitialized" state.

Now that it is toast, Media Toolbox claims that this USB stick is a "ChipsBnk Flash Disk" of total disk size of 8 MB. Confirmed as 8 MB by 3 Windows PCs.

I cannot format this USB stick on any of our Windows PCs or the MicroA1. I am assuming it is now permanently toasted.

Unfortunately, I did not try this USB stick on the Windows PCs before I tried to back up my files on the MicroA1, so I do not know if it worked in a Windows environment before it encountered OS4.

Thanks for the replies. I have send an email to Joerg.

Meanwhile, I have backed up my "work" partition, however it is too late in the evening to do a format. Most of my 3rd party applications, web browsers and data files are located on that partition.

JXfileSystem requester ...
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

This afternoon, I powered up my MicroA1 system and received the following Requester ...

JXfileSystem DH1: (a1ide.device, unit 0)
resetcachefugger: CacheBuffer is still locked!
Please notify the author!

----------
I clicked continue
----------
Grim Reaper for AmiDock croaked with 80000003 DSI error
----------
I clicked ignore DSI error
----------

Another requester showing ...

JXfileSystem DH1: (a1ide.device, unit 0)

Function 'unlockcachebuffer' detected an invalid Cachebuffer!
This is a safety check requester, which should
never appear under normal conditions. Please
notify the author about the error above and if
possible under what circumstances it appeared.

BEWARE: The filesystem might crash if you click continue.
Please save your work first!

---------
powered off and on to reset
---------

Appeared to come up ok when I powered on my system again.

This is the first time I have seen these requesters about JXfilesystem.

Should I be worried? Is this an indication of more trouble to follow?

Who is the author for JXfilesystem ?

@tonyw

I tried with OWB 3.31 and OWB 3.32. Sometimes I get some stuff in the window, other times I get nothing. Always stalls at about the 504 KB mark.

Also having intermittant trouble accessing amigans.net and some other sites so may be trouble with our ADSL line or ISP.

Update... For me, http://www.abc.net.au/news seems to load ok using AWeb APL Lite, IBrowse 2.4, NetSurf 3.0 Development version, and TimberWolf public apha. Probably looks a bit different than you would expect when viewed with some of these browsers. OWB 3.31 is still no dice.

Thanks for the update Chris.

I went back to OWB 3.31 on May 2, 2011. I tried many Icon Tool types changes to speed up OWB 3.32 on my system. But in the end, It just wasn't worth the hassle. I found that the delays were completely random.

I use OWB 3.31 and NetSurf.

Re: KingCON buffer! How make it bigger ?
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

I played a bit with a KCON.prefs file.

0/50///Testing/ALT0/50//100/MAXBUF-128/CLOSE

This opens a full width window called Testing with all the normal KingCON gadgets. Aternate size is same width but smaller top to bottom.

Clicking on the Zoom gadget selects the alternative size. Clicking Zoom again restores the window to the normal size.

If I iconify the window while it is in the normal size, the Zoom gadget works ok after I restore the window to normal operation.

If I click the Zoom gadget to make the window smaller and then iconify, it goes back to the smaller size when I restore normal operation and the Zoom gadget no longer works as expected. The system seems to ignore the Zoom gadget. If I stretch the window using the Sizing gadget, then I can use the Zoom gadget again after that. Sizing gadget seems to wake up the system again.

@Mrodfr

I do not know how to do this with a prefs file, but the following works for me with KingCON version 1.8 ...

The Shell icon has a tool type
WINDOW=CON:50/50/600/350/AmigaShell/CLOSE

I changed my User-Startup sequence to match yours,
and changed the tool types on the Shell icon.

WINDOW=CON:/50//350/AmigaShell/CLOSE
This gives me a window called AmigaShell that is as wide as the screen and has KingCON menus, scrollbar and gadgets.

WINDOW=CON:/50//350//CLOSE
This gives me a window called KingCON that is as wide as the screen and has KingCON menus, scrollbar and gadgets.

KingCON version 1.8 ( also known as KingCON (68020) 1.8 )

PS --

Normally I use the normal AmigaShell and use KingCON with my ARexx programs, so I use a slightly different User-Startup sequence that allows me to preserve the normal AmigaShell but also use KingCON when I want to have a scrollable console window.

;This mounts KCON and KRAW
if exists DEVS:KingCON-mountlist
Mount KCON: from DEVS:KingCON-mountlist
Mount KRAW: from DEVS:KingCON-mountlist
endif

This way I can use a KingCON Shell icon with the following tool types
WINDOW=KCON:/50//350//CLOSE

It also allows me to use CON: or KCON: with my ARexx programs.

Re: What do you expect from update 3?

@Antique

I do not know if it is a hardware bug or a software bug. I had all 4 USB ports working fine with AmigaOS 4.1. When I tried to upgrade to AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1 from the CD, my system became very unstable every time I tried to boot from the Update 1 CD. The system would crash or freeze or boot into a white workbench screen or boot into a black screen. After many hours, I finally got the install done and had the same unstable system booting from HD. After I disabled my rear USB ports, my system was very stable and would boot-up fine from CD or HD.

Later someone discovered that we could comment out the following modules in the Kicklayout file and enable all 4 USB ports.

;MODULE Kickstart/a1floppy.device.kmod
;MODULE Kickstart/it8212ide.device.kmod
;MODULE Kickstart/lsi53c8xx.device.kmod
;MODULE Kickstart/sii0680ide.device.kmod
;MODULE Kickstart/sii3112ide.device.kmod
;MODULE Kickstart/sii3114ide.device.kmod
;MODULE Kickstart/sii3512ide.device.kmod
;MODULE Kickstart/3dfxVoodoo.chip

I would say that one of these files contains something that sets up the right conditions to cause a very unstable MicroA1. Disabling two USB ports simply allowed us to comfortably use our systems and boot from the AmigaOS 4.1 Update 1 CD.

Although we use the AmigaOne version of AmigaOS on the MicroA1, the MicroA1 is not the same as an AmigaOne with an Radeon 7000 card.

I have only one request for update 3 ...

As a MicroA1 owner, I would like to know if I have to disable my USB ports before I attempt to install another ISO image. If update 3 is released as an ISO image, please make sure that it boots on the MicroA1 with all 4 USB ports enabled and HD as master on one onboard VIA IDE port and CD as master on the other onboard VIA IDE port. I don't want to go through another install like OS4.1 update 1.

Re: OWB 3.32

Update...

After some experimentation, I have two remaining issues with OWB 3.32
1) slow launch of OWB 3.32 every time I use it
2) random delays when using bookmarks to go to websites

Closing tabs and quitting OWB 3.32 work fine now.

Most of the time bookmarks work fine; however, sometimes there is a delay from when I select a bookmark to the webpage actually showing up in my OWB window. The delay can be anywhere from a few seconds to over a minute. Since these delays are completely random, I cannot pinpoint any particular website. Yesterday, it worked fine for several hours. Tonight I get some delays again.

I have enabled the bookmark command in tooltypes and reduced many delays by rebuilding my bookmark file (and adding www where appropriate).

MicroA1 with IBM 750 GX CPU, 256MB RAM, Radeon 7000, 32MB Video RAM
AmigaOS 4.1 Update 2 public version
compositing effects disabled
OWB 3.32

Note:
OWB 3.31 launches faster than OWB 3.32 on my system.
NO DELAYS with using bookmarks with OWB 3.31 on my system.

- snip -

I followed the same actions using NotePad and OWB 3.31 and it worked just as I expected. Cut and paste and submit worked fine and I used a bookmark to move to another website and back here. My NotePad window is still open.

Update...

For my previous post, I used copy and paste to copy my notes from NotePad to the message field for my post. Cut and paste and submit and logout worked ok.

Then I tried to use a bookmark to move on to another website and OWB 3.32 would not go there. After several attempts to close the bookmark window, I quit NotePad and OWB 3.32 finally moved on to another website.

Update 2...

After some further experimentation, I found out that this had nothing to do with NotePad or cut and paste. It was simply a delay moving to the other website. I just didn't wait long enough. If I had waited about a minute, OWB 3.32 would have gone to the other website on its own using the bookmark.

I have reduced most of my delays by rebuilding my bookmark file (and adding www where appropriate).

Update...

If I use my bookmark to get to Sherman's Lagoon (http://slagoon.com), the annimated fish going across the screen seems to lock up OWB. I cannot close the bookmark window or use another bookmark.

Setting the DISABLEGIFANIMS tooltype stops the fish, and allows me to use my bookmarks to go to other websites after Sherman's Lagoon.

Summary of tooltypes changes I have made so far,
Using a different homepage
BOOKMARKCOMMAND=OWBAddressBook/AddressBook -%s
DOWNLOADDIR=RAM:
DISABLEGIFANIMS
COOKIEDB=RAM:cookieCollection.db

On my system, launching of OWB 3.32 is slower than launching of OWB 3.31. Close bookmarks, close tab, close/quit OWB 3.32 work quite well now.

@djrikki

I was having the same problem with the bookmarks.

Solved the bookmark issue by removing () from

Seems to work as expected if the Tool type reads as follows

BOOKMARKCOMMAND=OWBAddressBook/AddressBook -%s
