Re: Return to Castle Wolfenstein and Enemy Territory

@Rogue

Yes and I greatly prefer you spend time on further developping AOS than port (another) GPL FPS game (even if I can understand that you might need from time to time to 'escape' a bit OS development just to have fun, and it's always good to be able to show some "cult" games running under OS4).
For example I would prefer having some sort of threads API, or even better multicore support, etc. But it might be because I have a dev POV rather than a simple user POV.

Anyway your signature seems a bit alarming, please keep bothering, without your dedication I would not be running AOS 4 and I would really miss it !

@colinw

I'm trying to run my latest FTPMount development version :-$ And I guess I seriously broke something but don't know where nor when (this version is lying on my HD since almost 2 years now...)

As you are here I'm also trying to use SetDosDebug but I keep getting "invalid argument value' or something like this no matter what value I put. Can you explain me how I can use it ?

@alfkil

Thank you, it seems you were right, at least that's also what Colin is suggesting.

@Mrodfr

seeing the trace you sent it *is* clearly a 68k program that caused it because of petunia.library being on top of the stack frames... If ToolsDaemon is the only 68k thing you are running on your system then it *is* the culprit. And BTW using the arexx script mentionned by TSK isn't a hack at all (which I'm not sure ToolsDaemon was not), I really can't see why you don't want to use it ?? Do you have two features ToolsDaemon has and which can't be reproduced by using the script ??

@Mrodfr

I didn't check lately but last time Toolsdaemon similar facility was included by standard into AOS since 3.5. IIRC it's driven by an ARexx script.

Re: ASL File Requesters suck

@Daedalus

I think what Trixie is trying to say is that File requesters - as theur name implies - are requesters and it's very very uncommon and un-obvious to give menus to requesters in GUI paradigms. As a consequence almost no one except Amiga-aware people would find functions hidden there unless you tell them. But on the other hand it's quite the same for the 'F2' to rename a file in Windows Explorer: if no one tells you you won't know it.

Re: Serious AmigaOS future discussion
Quite a regular

@DaveP

What you are describing is intentionnaly (at least I think it is) darker than what it is really.
For example:
- 0) inability to log into ebay : I can't remember really (I bought 4.1 the day it was out, in fact I reserved it the day it was announced) but I can swear at the time I was using 4.0 that AWeb would let me log into ebay (may be not with all the CSS things well displayed, but anyway I would eventually log in).
- 5,6,7 and 8) what ??? As with every online purchase you have to wait after your "immediate purchase" that the goods arrive to your home. If your postal service isn't up to the task then either complain to them, either choose another one, but I don't see how this is Hyperion's fault nor how this is related to AOS 4.x
- 11) FYI update 2 doesn't require fresh install as it is in fact explicitely requiring update 1, so that one point less
- 13) Timberworlf is slow to start the first time, but certainly not up to 3 minutes, it it is the case then you have a serious hardware problem (PIO mode ?)

Anyway I see your point and I agree with you: AmigaOS 4.x in its current form isn't for non Amigan educated end-users. There are too much things one is used to get automatically done by the system which are still required to be manually done by the user under AmigaOS 4.x.

Development-wise it is better to create a filter function which picks up the correct files by examining them - doesn't give the user any control, but if the app can't open the file anyway this is irrelevant File extensions are an awful way of identifying a file type, just look at the mess on Windows where it is the only option. Of course it is necessary sometimes with particular formats which don't have distinctive headers.

Just to add for those unaware that what you are referring to already exists in ASL as ASLFR_FilterHook tag (in fact it already existed since ASL V38 under the form of tag ASLFR_FilterFunc)

@Amigo1

Even if other OSes do not have such an option, I have come used to it when I mistyped the name of a new created drawer.

What ? Windows has it since Windows 95 (as every file requester are in fact a small Explorer you can do everything you can do in it inside a file requester)

@ASL maintainer

Another thing that annoys me is when a program wants the user to select an icon and they are not displayed in the ASL requester they are opening. For example that's the case with AmiDock. I don't know if this is due to dumb programmers opening an ASL requester "Please select an icon" and at the same time specifying
ASLFR_RejectIconsTRUE
or if this is ASL autodocs that are false and ASLFR_RejectIcons is defaulting to TRUE instead of the documented FALSE. Bu t anyway that's really annoying.

Re: 68k OS getting close to OS 4.x
Quite a regular

@Rigo

You misunderstood me I'm really not for going the Windows way. For me a file selector is just that: a file selector, not a file manager (too much possibility to mess your filesystem accidentally "oops I moved that (critical) file away").

However I never suggested threading the file scanning either : surely you (not specifically you Rigo, but the AOS4 developers as a whole) are using ExamineDir() in a loop to scan the directory I was suggesting to check for button clicks in this loop to be able to exit it so you can process the user input.
Take this user case: I'm downloading all my archives in a single 'Downloads' directory. This directory contains tons of files and is long to display in ASL. Now when I want to download something from OWB, I must wait until the directory scanning is complete even if I know the path and the file name are good and only need to click 'Save'.

I agree with you that drawer selector might not have the same layout as a file selector. But I was speaking about file selector only for which sometime those gadgets appears, sometime not.

The other good feature for ASL can be (can be also used or not used by coder): automatic put of file format. I.e. user press Save, and coder for example add to ASL
ASLM_SaveFormat, ".jpg". And in requester, user have
".jpg" all the time at end of file name, and that ".jpg" can't be remove from string, only add filename for it. That will solve all that problem when user think "need add file format for file manually, or not".

Hmm ?? You are deeming this as a "modern feature" ??? Amiga never used file extension, on amiga file extensions are part of the filename and are only human understandable indaiction of what the file is but the system never used that to identify a file format (come on we are not on a certain Micr****t OS here
IMHO a programmer should never only rely file extension in his programs.

@Rigo

I would only say : "Amen" !

Two things that disturb me in ASL are:

1) it's very un-understandable why/how some gadgets are or are not present on the dialog (for example the filter field and the gadget to its right) even for me Amigan since 1988. I think it's generally ergonomically unwise to add and/or remove gadgets, it tends to perturb users, I find it better to deactivate them when they are not usable (but for this specific case I don't see why the user would not be able to use a filter !?)

2) I like the new ASL, it adds interesting things, abstracting the fact there are some graphical glitches in the public version, there is however one thing I miss from the old version: the old one wasn't waiting for the whole directory to be parsed to start displaying things and/or react to user input (click on OK/Save for example) . It was a very pleasant feature of the old version that I would like to see again. I understand the 'inline displaying' might be a bit more tricky with the sortable columns, but the other one is easy to fix : just check intuition messages while reading directory and in case the user clicked OK (or cancel) then just exit even if the whole directory isn't fully loaded.

Btw, a bit offtopic, but can you say a bit more details about "on which stage your work now" ? I maybe miss some topics where you already talk about, and just now read from amibounty, that "it almost done" :)

There was two parts in this bounty: wxBase port and wxCore port.
wxBase contains every utility classes that you'll want a modern toolkit to have (string, array, thread, etc.).
wxCore on the other hand builds upon wxBase to provide the core graphic toolkit. This comprises basic graphic classes (such as brush or pen) and also core controls (such as window, button, fileselector, etc.).

Actually on amigabounty you read that *wxBase* was almost completed (which can now be considered done, some minor bugs remain but I'll squash them afterward). I was starting wxCore when I had my first hardware problems (sometime in february), wxCore isn't very well engaged for now but I expect to have a quick alpha because once basic classes will be ported I'll be able to use generic classes to have a first running version. That will not be *graphically* native but I might provide a theme (it's a class set to instruct how to draw things, not just "bitmap skin") to make it more Amiga'ish. After that I'll start to replace controls one by one to use Reaction (where it will be possible of course).

Still it's not Abalaban's machine :)

Neither would it with the bounty : it will also be lent.

It's very kind of you to propose my name but on the other hand it makes me feel very uncomfortable.
Why ? Simply because you all have great expectations in me and what did I gave you ? Only multiple missed deadlines. Some were my own fault (too slow) other weren't (breaking hardware) but in the end the result is the same : I have the feeling I have scammed every donors by the by now very long passed original release promise.
At first I volunteered to this bounty simply because it was my own conviction that such a GUI toolkit can be profitable to the Amiga platform, I had no particular other interest in wxWidgets and I thought the money would motivate me. I eventually found that my motivation does not come from money: as a hobby my motivation in Amiga comes in fact from the fun I can have with it.
I don't think I will ever volunteer for a bounty again that's too much constraints and it drains the fun out of it. When I'll finally receive my IDE-SATA adapter (they should have had received it by now but they haven't) I'll resume my work on wxWidgets anyway because I'm stubborn and I promised I'd do it.

To all wxWidgets donors : thank you for donation and your huge patience.
To all wxWidgets prospective donors : please consider donating to another bounty instead (AAMP, Timberwolf, for example) it's already enough uncomfortable as it is without new donation. At the very least you could consider a donation when wxWidgets will be released and if you feel it deserves it.

@Mrodfr

Thank you for proposing my name, but as I already explained to Trevor, I already have a Sam Flex 800 lent to me by Creols for as long as I need it he said (he has another Sam for himself lucky him .
Main problem right now is that Sam uses SATA drives whereas my A1XE was using PATA, I'm currently waiting for an adapter which should be available at the end of this week or begining of the other, after that I'll be able to access my sources and dev environment and resume everything I was doing.
In the meantime I'm discovering AmigaOS4 on the Sam.

Re: OWB 3.28

@Daniel

For OpenURL to work you might need to do some configuration. Launch the pref program go to the browser tab, if OWB entry exists check its checkbox (if not already, and uncheck all the other) and verify path is correct (correct it if not), then save.
Launch a shell type
C:OpenURL http://www.amigans.net

and see what happens, if OWB launches and display the page then OpenURL.library is correctly configured, your problems comes from SimpleMail, if not keep modifying OpenURL preferences until it works, then try SimpleMail.
