Re: ASL requester improvement

@kolla

I agree that your example is a bad one from newbie POV.
Many small buttons with single chars to describe them is not
optimal. But when you're used to it, it does save GUI space.

It would have been better if they had full text or even
graphics instead.

EDIT: But I guess they chose this way because it will stay the
same over every language, thus making it easy to guide
newbies..

@kolla

So Amiga OS (and its parts) should never evolve? Always
stay the same even if they are bad design choices today?

If that would be the case I would never ever buy an Amiga.
For me Amiga is a better, more efficient way of doing things..
This does not mean that Amiga OS shouldn't ever borrow
and steal features that are good from other OSes. Quite the
opposit I think. IMHO

No one said ReAction was perfect. Anyone who actually _has_ programmed software using RA will know of its shortcomings. And this is what this thread is for: identifying RA's weakest spots so that they could possibly be remedied in future updates. We're discussing things from the technical and user point of view. No need for flame wars.

Couldn't have said it better myself

This is the reason I started this thread in the first place.
Not as a MUI vs ReAction war. But if MUI has good points
then it's wise to adopt them into ReAction if possible.

I have read several times that Rigo has done extensive
updates to ReAction during the past year (or more?).. Maybe
Rigo could mention some of the fixes/additions that have
been made, if they're not secrets until 4.1.1 is released?

ReAction, what is missing to make it a good GUI?

I always see people mention MUI as being so much better
than ReAction on AW.net.

So I was thinking..

What is missing from ReAction?
What's wrong with the ReAction implmentation?
Is it possible to fix without a total rewrite?

I guess Intuition should be mentioned here aswell..
In another thread I read about the limiting menu system
of Amiga OS, which I gathered Intuition handles.
Is this fixable with a new ReAction menu class?

Also what is generally missing or wrong in AmigaOS4 GUI
that we (the users aswell as developers) want changed?

This is not a theme thread, so anything having to do with the
looks of OS4 is OT.

Personally I don't like the default resize handling of windows.
Resize should be able to done from all borders IMO instead
of from one corner. Yes I know of the commodity but it's not
the default way.

There's currently a discussion going on about the sizing gadget. I'll try for the next build to make the fat border on the bottom... ideally, our intuition experts could come up with a possibility to overlay a small triangular sizing gadget without the need for the thick borders, and without the need to have eagle eyes to hit the border when resizing like in Windows XP.

That sounds great.
OS4 is getting really interesting for me again.. If any better
hardware arrives (than SAM-Flex) I will buy it once more.

Will resize from all borders be implemented internally as a
prefs option instead of as a commodity?
This is a big flaw in the Amiga GUI compared to Windows
IMO.
I use this feature every day and the Amiga way of doing it
from one corner is really limiting and slows you down when
working.

Sorry this is a little OT. But I hope it's ok.

Harry

@tfrieden

Is it possible to set the GUI to have the "fat" border on the
bottom rather than on the righthand?
Until the ReAction GUI window resize gadget is changed
anyway. Look better than on the righthand side IMO.

@Regarding the Resize gadget

Btw I had a thought about this a few days ago..
Is it possible to have the square resize gadget removed
and have just the edge (like Windows for example) to resize
the windows. But with the addition of some extra graphics
outside the window corner, like a second edge (double size
corner). Making it possible to have thinner righthand sideand
and bottom borders when resizable windows are activated.
I hope you understood my description.

@nubechecorre

I will wait a while longer.. for a faster Amiga. If Acube releases a 460EX or any other maker releases a faster machine with support for OS4.x I will get it for sure.

Unfortunately, according to our internal tests, it simply doesn't work acceptably enough without the latest components. I am doing my hardest to erradicate as many operational problems as possible ready to coincide a release with the next OS4 update.

I guess this comment from Rigo still aplies as OS4.1.1 hasn't been released yet.

Seeing that Rogue mentioned that Cairo has gotten
hardware acceleration since last OS4.1 update..

Maybe someone with access to the latest builds could tell us
the effect of this is? Huge speedup, noticable speedup or no visable speedup?

@acefnq

Get a Belkin SurgeMaster. It's quite cheap and give great
protection against spikes.
It's alot cheaper than a UPS.

I have one for my home theater setup aswell as my computer.
I have no worries even when there's thunder outside anymore.

@joerg

Is the snapshot Murakami provided the latest release?
In that case you can ignore the GUI request I PMed you

It looks way nicer with the adress/search inputs horisontally
centered to the toolbar. Or was this always there,
configurable? I requested it because I saw an older
screenshot of them not centered..
Anyway a mute request now I see.. Nice work!

My Firefox 3.5.2 get 93 of 100 on the test.
It seems the fifth cube gets gray instead of blue, otherwise
it's perfect.

The OWB test seems to get 100 of 100 but fails to get the
Acid3 logo in its correct color, black.

Is this a bug in OWB or the Amiga version Joerg?

Don't forget to install the DVD plugin aswell.

This one is needed aswell as the ac3 and dts decoders
for playing commercial encrypted DVDs.

@AmiKit

Search for "Radeon+8500+Rogue" and you'll probably find where he comments on the subject.

The problem being that they couldn't get the coordinates to give the correct numbers in 3D. 2D works fine. But as MorphOS got it working I suppose
giving it some development time would fix the problem.

The latest comment on the subject being in this thread
