I would like to know how OS4 for CA will Ship. Do Acube intend a real CD with docs or downloadable as an ISO-file?

Peoples opinions on Emulation verse the real deal???
Just popping in
Just popping in

This is a hardcore question of whats better emulation or the real deal...

Does a game like Wings or Zack McCracken run smoother or look better under emulation or is it just a cheap knock off of Amiga hardware?

Really want to know if emulation is all that and a bag of chips or just better than nothing... verse not having an Amiga to play these games etc.........

posted to another board as well but its a great question for Amiga users?

The page given says that LDI is dropping PayPal and has Ebay (including PayPal) as a boycott target, but gives no direct information as to why. Can you independently confirm what you have said about PayPal?

@Chip

It is a non-fixed XE-G4 model. I suppose it is more to do with the connector used in the card reader cable than the A1. Similar thing can be witnessed with IDE cable connectors I think - some of them have all holes open while others have one blocked.

Re: OS4 vs OS3.9

@Minuous

Some examples:

1)
If you crash a program under OS4, is will most likely not bring down your OS, and you get report telling you whats wrong.

2)
If your AmigaOS4 does lockup, you can recover your debug printf() after worm boot, its safely kept in write protected area.

3)
New SDK explains how you interface whit OS4, and how to write system friendly, OS3.9 NDK might suggest things that is no longer safe, or is obsolete.

4)
And remember there few new modules like USB / PCI / Amiga Input if like too support these things you most upgrade.

5)
The SDK is POSIX compatible, so you write most the C example and lean some stuff, is also where useful when try recompiling or porting stuff from Linux.

Hi @Rudei

1> As you may or may not know, I have a rather sexy looking AmigaOne XE.
Here's some pix of mine: http://www.flickr.com/photos/11367727@N07/
It was four years this last May 1st.

2> Firstly, not so long ago, the machine decided to take ages to boot up - it boots the U-boot ok,
loads kickstart and then takes ages to load the WB.

I noticed this after the July2007 Update. Did you review the Kernel KS.mods to see if all are
loading or just the ones you have hardware for? I forgot to do that... My machine crapped out
around the second week of August.

3> Now, the machine does not detect the keyboard or mouse...
Same here. It goes through drive lights OK. When my A1 booted up for the last time, all the lights
danced through the sequence of lights correctly, but ended up in the black screen. Ah, guess what
the ProView LCD monitor failed! I took back to Circuit City where I bought it two years ago and let
them bench check. It took ten minutes to come up with a weak unstable picture. I have warranty
on the monitor, so it's a factory remanufactured replacement.

4> Its the same battery as always...
I recenty bought a Radeon 7000 GFX card from AmigaKit. I wanted it wether or not my card was
bad or not. I wanted a backup system. Also, I got a battery holder. My battery holder was a bit too
wobbly to say it was a good connection. I'm getting ready to replace it now.

5> ...the fan sounds a bit crappy but always has done as it is original...
See my Flickers. I used a SunOn replacement and added the Zalman fan over that. Very quiet
system. The CoolerMaster allows fan speed control, temperature monitoring. 44 F degrees was
normal for the summer operations with air conditioner on in the room maintaining 80 F

6> I have not tried another kb as yet but wondered if anyone else had had this problem?
Is is a tell tale sign of HW failure or something else?...Is is a tell tale sign of HW failure or something
else?

The 90 F degree days probably stressed the machine here. I didn't notice any problems in previous
summers. Ah, but I'm four years old now. So, it's all about growing old and dying isn't it! =:o

I haven't got around to re-assembling the machine to test my monitor replacement, gfx card, and
new battery holder. Maybe this weekend I'll get around to do it. Can't say anything for sure yet, but
I let you know as soon as I can!

Does the PPC "ExecNG" have faclities for handling Virtual Machining in
current state? just yes/no would be fine to answer this,

I think the answer to that is almost, it does have virtualized memory.

This what TonyW wrote:

Quote:
True, but LiveForIt can't do that himself, only the Exec can write to the MMU registers, only the Exec knows where LiveForIt's program is and what the mapping for his program is

It looks like it not possible for me have my own memory map for a possess running because only the Exec can write to MMU register and configure it.

So we are where close to being able to write Virtual Machines on OS4.

It might be that you work around the problem whit

IExec->SetIntVector(TRAPNUM_DATA_SEGMENT_VIOLATION, &bs->b_FaultInt);

I found this line in Blitzen.c, but it might be slow, because it end?s up in interrupt routine that needs to taking care of virtualization.

You should not need to do that.

Sound like should quick format and reinstall OS4.

Are you using USB or PS2 ports?

Yes right before my CPU stopped working.

Tonight I will try a different kb, but it seems weird that both mouse and kb are playing up, almost as if somethings either got fried or shorted out.

Thanks in advance,

Try battery first.
Are you using wireless keyboard and mouse ?
Could be that the PS2 wireless receiver is going faulty.
If your not wireless it could be a broken wire.

Your keyboard and mouse cables havent got trapped by a desk or something and got damaged, or a sudden horizontal jerk to the rear of the amiga might have damaged the ps2 ports if the cables had no slack in them.

OS4 doesnt support 680x0 processors. How compatible will the "emulation" be with old 680x0 software (f.i. Kick 2.0 -> ).

Way better then on AmigaOne, because you have custom chips and we do not.

Quote:
My PPC setup is 210mhz (I think) and I have 256 mb fastmem with Mediator and Voodoo3

You get PowerPC native drivers for all your hardware and you will get access to New PowerPC based programs that runs many times faster then on your old OS3.9, and because OS4.0 has minimal memory protection you should notice when dangers programs in your system, so you can avoid buggy programs that corrupts your system and crashes vital data.

I think you should not upgrade because of the 680x0 software, but because PowerPC software runs many times faster and more secure.
If develop software you should defiantly upgrade, the development tools in OS4 SDK is way better then OS3.9 NDK.

Quote:
Is it worth the trouble getting OS4 or should I wait until Amiga Inc. (or other developers) releases new hardware?

Well if no hardware is demonstrated whit OS4, then no hardware is demonstrated whit OS4, when they can show AmigaOS4 running on some new hardware then you buy it not before then, forget pre payments, in this market you get many broken promises, but some times dreams becomes reality.

You should remove PH0, DH0 from your mount list !!
Only when you get newer version of CW.Device will high density formats be supported.
