Did you know that instant messaging can also be done via a web interface? So that although we don't have an ICQ client, you can use your trusty OWB, for example? A good service is Communication Tube: www.communicationtube.netWorks quite well and supports ICQ, IRC, MSN and Google Talk. Happy IM'ing!

@xenic Quote: There wouldn't be any Ringhio issues if it used Amiga styleguide compliant windows like AmigaDOS requesters instead of splashing itself directly on the screen like an old Recoverable Alert Guru or something. Somehow the whole thing seems like a hack to me. Since it's of little use, I've disabled it on my system.
People really seem to mis-interpret the purpose of Ringhio messages, and seem to confuse them with requesters. I have commented on this a couple of times, and will gladly do it again: What requesters and Ringhio messages share is that they both DISPLAY TEXT. However, requesters are designed to require user input - a confirmation, or an option selection. On the other hand, Ringhio messages are just notifications: they display something, and disappear. Based on the type and importance of the message, the programmer will choose which of the two ways is appropriate. Generally speaking, requesters should be used when user input, confirmation, or acknowledgement is needed. Ringhio messages represent a totally new UI concept introduced in OS4.1u1. As such, they cannot (and do not even have to) conform to old standards such as the AmigaStyleGuide.

@nubechecorre
Yes you can use TrueType fonts from Windows under OS4. In fact, it's about the only meaningful choice now that Agfa Compugraphic fonts are dead and buried.
You just have to install them using TypeManager (located in your System drawer). The tool takes the .ttf font data and prepares it for system use, creating the necessary .font and .otag files for you. After that, TrueType fonts conform to Amiga's standard "bullet" API and can be used just like Agfa fonts.

I can throw away DirOpus! =:o
Both ClassAction and DirOpus4 follow the classic dual-lister paradigm while Filer uses single listers. It may take some time to get used to it but it is well worth the change. Especially with the Filer commodity (which starts a new lister when clicking in an empty space on WB) the new file management system is very powerful and easy to use. I haven't started DOpus for months now

@kas1e Quote: imho, today PlayCDDA itself are useless to have as standalone programm. Imho, that function (playCDDA) must be already in the any music player (like Tunenet).
Because for what we need these tons of little programms, which make no big deal today, while better have one music programm with many functions.
...
The same imho for PlayCDDA, it can be as part of Tunenet.. But that is imho only of course :)
I agree with you. But unless TuneNet becomes an integral part of the OS (which may never happen), it's better to have at least something that allows the user to play audio CDs. Amiga was a computer that defined the word "multimedia". I think it looks quite strange that the current version of the OS does not allow something as trivial as playing CDs out of the box, ie. without installing a third-party app.

Now that Fredrik Wikstrom's PlayCDDA has a proper ReAction GUI, what about making it an OpenAmiga project and submitting it for use as an official part of the OS? To replace the ancient PlayCD, which is pretty much useless with today's optical drives.

There is an inconsistency in Filer's behaviour when performing operations on files.
I select a file in the lister and choose Rename. When the rename window is closed (after performing or cancelling the operation), the file becomes unselected.
I select a file in the lister and choose Set Protect. When the protection window is closed, the file stays selected.
The behaviour should always be the same.

@Raziel Quote: To be perfectly honest i wouldn't want the devs to spend time on fixing an issue that looks like as if it comes from those old programs
Before we write the software off: the question is where the issue actually comes from. So far we know that: - with the previous versions of locale.library there were no issues with the mentioned programs; - all works fine with no preferred languages (English as default); - there is currently a confirmed issue with locale.library that causes programs to open in a second preferred language even though the first preferred language should be used. So, something has changed or is broken in the library. That's why I'm asking for some updated info on the current status of locale.library development.

@Chris Quote: There's a bug in current locale.library, as if you set English as preferred language, and German as second, quite a lot of programs (even some of the OS included ones) will show up in German instead of English.
I wonder if there's any news on this? I mean, fixing the current locale.library that breaks some older programs if you use a language different from English? So far I have experienced problems with AmigaWriter 2 and ArtEffect 4 (broken GUI - program unusable) and TurboCalc 5 (program can be used but menus are not shown). Removing the preferred language is a solution but it's quite impractical - I need the Czech codeset to use AmigaWriter and TurboCalc properly.

@Amigo1 As it has already been pointed out, the project involves certain costs that have to be covered. By producing a printed book, there's a fair chance that enough interested buyers will generate enough revenue to cover all the costs (including printing). With an electronic version very little is guaranteed. If it's digital and someone has it, you can be very close to the point when everyone has it
