Actually, I believe it should already be in WBStartup.

If not, try searching for it with the Workbench Find utility, which you can access in the Window menu (last item).

So in about 9 years it will have gained about an hour, so that they won't need to change its time zone when summer time starts .

A potential downer: Using OWB, I can load the printer's web page - it has a built in server to let you control print options and see how much toner you have left, etc - but I can't see or change the settings because the password window never opens.

OWB doesn't support HTTP authentication (yet?). But as described here it might be possible to use the trick of embedding the username and password in the URL.

Great idea if it is possible!
I would spend some money for that plugin(s), just as for OWB and flash-plugin.

Why are everybody so eager to get these plugin solutions? I have never understood why it is better to e.g. read a PDF file in a reader window embedded inside your browser window, when you could read it in a separate window with the application's full functionality available and where you can resize the window and flip it back/front as you wish, whle still being able to use the browser independently in its own window while you read.

On Windoze at work, it always irritates me to e.g. get Word files opened in IE; when I'm done reading them, I always by habit close the window thinking I'm closing Word and getting back to IE -- which closes IE so I have to start it again.

I'm much happier with the Amiga Way (TM): Delegate tasks to the programs that were made for them, make use of IPC (using ARexx or whatever means you want), and don't try to hide the fact that you're doing it, it is after all one of the strengths of our platform.

Re: Amiga server?

@broadblues

Maybe it's related to the PHP? I use Apache on OS4 24/7/365, just for serving family photos to a small number of family and friends, but only with static HTML or even just Apache's "raw" dir listings. I rarely see such problems. I do reboot on average once a day, I guess, either to install new betatest material or test translated catalogs (I'm an OS4 beta tester and translator) or for other similar reasons. But in between reboots Apache just runs happily in the background for up to several days.

I also run a Samba server on the same machine for a couple of other local machines (my wife's Win XP laptop and my Linux/Oracle Enterprise database server -- which is just an old PC I installed CentOS 5 and Oracle Enterprise 11g on for fun). Samba is also working quite well with no interference needed and no disturbances felt.

Hi nbache,

So, how does it look on a 42" display???

Pretty good, in fact -- after increasing the font sizes as mentioned above it is absolutely usable also for "normal" work. As I think I wrote about elsewhere, I use a WB background picture which is taller than the screen in order to avoid stretching it in the other direction, so the Boing ball on it is half cut off at the bottom, looking a bit like a rising sun -- but that's okay, doesn't look too bad at all. Texts and icons are generally crisp and clear, and it feels like using a more normal screen until you realise the distance you're actually sitting at.

I haven't really finished the setup phase yet, though. I need the Sam to be able to access my A1 over the LAN, as that is where I have the big disks with photos, music etc., but I didn't want to run Ethernet cable through the living room, so I have been experimenting (in vain) with a wireless access point and have now chosen to use a pair of HomePlug adapters. That took some experimenting too, before I found out which outlets to use where they could "see" each other over the mains spaghetti in our house.

Next steps include choosing the most suitable program for viewing the pictures as well as some other little adjustments. I haven't actually seen photos on that screen yet.

If I'm way of the beaten track, never mind then

I think you are. The size of the window does not have to match the resolution of the screen (it doesn't even have to be smaller, but that's another story).

You can put (more or less) whatever you want as window size.

I'm on a 1600?1200 WB, and I use

WINDOWLEFT=64
WINDOWTOP=77
WINDOWWIDTH=1418
WINDOWHEIGHT=1046

- for an OWB window taking up most of the screen, but leaving some space along all four sides for AmiDock, disk icons, clock, etc.

Ho to solve the problem ?

Thanks

Just a guess; I haven't tried the game. But if it looks for usr:, it probably expects the SDK to be installed, since that sets up usr: to point to SDK:POSIX/usr - and some other assigns you might need later (var:?).

I'll join the chorus:

a) Yeah, it looks like something I'd prefer over the current offerings, especially if it can directly import my old IBrowse bookmarks.

b) It would be great if we could also get menu access to the bookmarks.

c) I'd also prefer Reaction over MUI for this (because OWB uses Reaction) - but it is not crucial for me.

Now, I may have misunderstood what the above was meant as an answer for, but if it was this:

- then, no, that was not what I meant. I was trying to suggest that you could make some sort of generic USB device icon using the official USB symbol, the one with the three arrows (or rather lines with different ending symbols) emerging from the common stem, as part of the design.

This one:

@Mason

Ah, so *that's* why we haven't seen lots of varieties of device icons yet

Yes, please do! I'll look forward to seeing some USB sticks and similar.

Of course, one problem with this is that e.g. USB0C: can equally well be an external HD, an external DVD writer, a "normal" USB stick, or an adapter for storage cards of varying formats. So even if we have a def_icon which fits one of these categories better (like the image of a memory stick), it won't necessarily fit when we plug in one of the other types.

But maybe you could elaborate on the USB symbol ... you know, those arrows ...

Technically, it's more like def_DEVICE.info. But yes, that's the idea.

Quote:
Creating a def_USB0.info would probably (hopefully) be the default icon for a unit in USB.

Depending on the USB device, it might be def_USB0C.info (if it has an MBR, more precisely). And of course you might need def_USB1.info and def_USB1C.info etc. as well.

There a full description of the langugae in the Amigaos 3.5 (and 3.9?) docs if you have access to those. Not sure where else it's described.

I always turn to the ancient, but excellent ARexxGuide:

http://www.aminet.net/search.php?query=arexxguide

There are several archives worth downloading. I use the AmigaGuide version. There's a patch for it, and some archives with integration into CygnusEd, if you use that. (I used to use that integration, but haven't gotten around to setting it up again with the newer CEds, so I can't tell you whether they till work, but probably).

I agree. And I have to date (I think) never had the opportunity to translate a catalog where no strings at all were the same in the original and the translated version. So that's no problem in itself.

Quote:
I did mention "The Plough" as being a common name and not one of the official ones that DU would use. BTW It is only the Americans that call it The Big Dipper, in 'English' English it is The Plough

Ah, sorry, didn't know that.

Quote:
and we even called it Charles' Wagon in the distant past. I had forgotten that name until you mentioned the Danish equivalent.

Interesting - perhaps a relic from the Viking days?

Quote:
In French it is le "Chariot". I do expect these local names to change with country but was not sure about the official Latin ones that DU uses.

Well, my point is, as far as I know (and I admit I'm not an astronomer), in Danish everybody uses the common names for things like Karlsvognen and Nordstjernen, so those should also be the ones used in the Danish version of DU.

Quote:
How does the Latin genetive work in your language as used in a star name such as Alpha Orionis ?

When Latin is used, it is conjugated as Latin, so it doesn't "work in our language" at all, but in Latin. So we'd call it Alpha Orionis even in the context of a Danish sentence -- unless we have a common Danish name for it (I don't remember offhand whether we do for Alpha Orionis).

Quote:
So the star names would not translate then if the Arabic is still used, but I wonder if that is the same for all languages ?

Most likely not.

Quote:
Things like The Pole Star / North Star are common names not used by DU but Polaris would still be Polaris.

Almost no Danes would even know what Polaris was. Everybody calls it Nordstjernen.

Quote:
On screen the characters are shown, DU uses a custom font as things like α were not available when originally written. However that would stay the same but in lists and windows the Greek letters are spelled out in Lain characters, it is these occurences I was wondering about. Though I guess Alpha is the same in most languages ?

I would suggest changing from a custom (bitmap) font to a TTF font containing the needed glyphs with the correct Unicode values. I think this would be usable in OS4 regardless of the current Locale settings and system charset, although I'm not sure about the technical details of how it is used from a program. (Edit: Ah, I see J?rg has already given an example which seems to cover this.)

But if you have a look at e.g. Locale prefs, the first tab page, when you have the needed font installed (e.g. BitStream CyberBit or -- perhaps "stolen" from a Windows installation like I have -- Arial Unicode), you can see that all the "exotic" language names are written in their own script. So it is doable.

Niels

In "English" the constellation names (official ones not common names for asterisms like The Plough) are not English at all but Latin. So would the Latin be international or do different countries use their own names for such things. Likewise many of the star names are Arabic, so maybe should remain as they are. Other star identifications are in the form of Greek letters followed by the Latin genitive, again this would probably not get translated - or would it ?

I'd say you should allow for translation of star names and constellation names. I believe it varies a lot from language to language whether the Latin or a native name is used. In Danish, what you know as the Big Dipper is called Karlsvognen - the Chariot of Charles . And many other constellations have the name you also use, but translated to Danish; e.g. Cygnus is Svanen - The Swan. Stars more often use the Latin (or Arabic etc.) name, but we still have some with native names as well, e.g. Stella Polaris, which we call Nordstjernen - The North Star (which I believe is also used in English sometimes?).

As for the ones you mention with Greek letters and a Latin genitive, I think they would all use the same names in Danish, but normally the Greek letter would be replaced by its name in Latin letters, e.g. Alpha Centauri, not α Centauri.

In short, although I know this will come back on my own head , you'd better let the lot of them be localized.

Re: Newbie Questions!

Just can't stay away

@ChrisH

Right. That actually achieves more or less the same thing as what I do. I have chosen a picture which has the correct width and a larger height than the screen, and set it to Tiled. It doesnt scale, of course, but it fills the screen without distorting the aspect. And as long as both dimensions are equal to or larger than the screen, it will not repeat either (in spite of the "Tiled" name). So all it does is display the top part of the picture, as far as the screen height will let it, and ignore the rest.

Works for me.

Niels

@ChrisH

Hmm, so how would you want a 4:3 image scaled with aspect kept to 1440?900 then? Should it have blank areas at the sides? Or would you rather have the bottom cut off? That is actually what I chose to do for the standard 4.1 WB backdrop on the Sam when I connected it to our 16:9 TV. The Boing Ball lies like a rising sun down at the bottom of the screen - doesn't look too bad.
