Re: Initial steps with AmiFig on aos4, version #7
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@kas1e
I retried Amifig once again... as I said before, it looks quiet promising and this is the sort of software I need. However a few features are needed (they may already be there though...):

- exporting to eps (incl. embedded preview) or any other vector format which is PageStream compatible. (As I understand, this is done through fig2dev... Can someone explain how to configure that ?*)

- some sort of mathematical formular editor

Thanx, for infos. I am a bit lazy, and it might be somewhere in the docs or may already been discussed here. But before I spent hours on that, a small hint will be very wellcome !

I would of course suggest:

iBatch
image batch processing/renaming tool incl. EXIF support

MUIBase + FinalWriter

ADRipper (MP3 ripping from CD)
ArtEffect
FryingPan + MakeCD
TuneNet (Soundplayer)

It is not ruled out, but I think OlafS3s approach is good anyway, an e.g. Systemwide adressbook can be used by quiet a few apps.

@OlafS3

Well, the idea is not bad... it would certainly not replace an OfficeApp, but could make things much easier.
I would, indeed, appriciate more integration between those applications. But the main features we need at the moment is a decent wordprocessor. Which Amiga proggy can do for example, proper tables ? None. So we need to do that first, otherwise importing tables, adresses etc. into CW or whatever doesn't make sense.

I guess it would be a good idea for a start to find out what most people need for "Office integration" (Poll and Prepoll).
Here are some ideas for "Office integration":

Adressdatabase like MS Outlook / syncable with different Internetbased Adressbooks (web.de/google....). MUIbase would be a good choice here.

(Adresslist)generation via CW/Pagestream

listmerge with CW/Pagestream

Calendar integration / sync with internetbased calenders

Adressbook integration from above into YAM (Systemwide Adressbook)

"Clipboardsharing" / How to display/print an ignition table in CW/Pagestream ?

Integration of simple vector drawing program (for charts etc./amifig) into CW

So, heaps of work to do. Here is a little example for integrating a Customer database (MUIBase) into FinalWriter. Including Adressmerging and Receiptprinting:

seems to be lot faster/usable than on my SAM440@677. However, wondering wether large tables in Gnumeric will also scroll/process fast enough (autofilter, mousewheelscrolling,...). Eagerly waiting for my X1000

Amicygnix is an Unix Environment for Amiga, it does not (!) emulate Unix, just uses Unix X-Server and X-11 libs. Plus some common Unix Toolkits like GTK etc. Therefore it is a lot easier to port Linux Soft.
The Backside is:

looks and feels more like Linux
is quiet sluggish to use
no OS4 native menus/filerequester
takes a while to launch

I rather boot into PPC Linux and use Open Office instead of Abiword etc.
However some small apps like the scanner interface are really great.

@ssolie

regarding wordprocessor/officesuite...
1) Which way would you personally suggest ? Pushing CW ? Waiting for OOlight ?

2) As "Hyperion insider", what would you suggest, how to get a wordprocessor/officesuite ?

This is my opinion:

Yes you can, ACube released Infos on the connectors + circuit layouts, but nobody actually wired thos connectors.

At some stage A-Cube had a beta of an expansionboard for utilizing those connectors.

I would love to have cables/expansion card which utilizes those connectors !

@desler
However, this seems to be an excellent starting point. But I guess, before people would "invest" money/skills or whatever, it should be "presentable":

- proper Amiga Menus / Amigalike usage
- Mason Icons
- non sluggish Mouse
- working printersupport (gives me Errors on my PS Printer/netprinter.device
- proper docx import (images, caps,....) / or do not implement it yet..

However, once you have a presentable version, people might invest time/money into this project, in order to make it highest priority. Hyperion/A-Eon should also invest (programming skills/money) plus we do need more skilled programmers (maybe payed via bounty) to stop whatever they work on recently and jump on the CW train.

So, Hyperion, A-Eon, ACP+TCP, ACube, former Amiga Companies and Comunity, what would you invest, and what do you want in return ?

@desler
just tested recent version.... looks a lot better than what I tested ages ago... However, this is what annoyed me most (besides missing features):

A simple docx with caps (Aufzählungszeichen) couldn't be imported properly, just the las cap was printed...

Mouse becomes very sluggish on right hand user buttons/menus on my SAM

Re: Whats next?

@all
Lets concentrate on Wordprocessor first... However if we (all) agree CW is a good starting point, we have to have it ready in one years time. This means, we do need more programming power... Mr. Desler already called for help:
Cinnamon Projects.
Maybe we could motivate more skilled programmers with additional bounties. Maybe another good idea would be to get a distributor (e.g. AmigaFuture/APC+TCP) on board as well.

@desler
Sorry, totally forgot about CW. Guess this would be a good starting point. I guess I have to download, try and suggest. Downloaded it ages ago...

Maybe a feature request on Amiga(noid) websites might be a good idea. This is what I would expect from a Wordprocessor:

- left, center, block justify
- word import
- copy/paste
- printing support (page format etc...)
- image text runaround
- different fonts/underline etc...
- tables (compatible with MS tables)
- database/CSV adress merge (Serienbriefe)
- autodate
- autopagenumbering
- Textfields
- table of contents generation
- Formular Editor (Bruchrechnen f. meine Klassenarbeiten
- simple Vectoreditor or vectordrawing import... (line, arrows, circles...)

So basically it should be something like Finalwriter plus Formular Editor, advanced tables and Wordimport.

@Joeled

Even though, I donnot have any programming/technical insights of OOlight or LibreOffice, I still belive

- to hard/takes to long to port for one person
- might gain massive speed enhancement in conjunction with Gallium - but an Amiga Office Suite should be "lean"/useable on upcoming (low spec) OS4 netbooks - will Qt+Gallium be fast enough ?

Quote:
Maybe we can create our own office suite?

Yes, I guess this should be the way to go. We need a team of several skilled programmers for that. So it probably doesn't matter if they port or rewrite from scratch. So, I vote for rewriting from scratch. Maybe enhancing Cinnamon Writer might be the only starting point, if you donnot want to rewrite from scratch.

So yes, I guess people desperatly need an "office suite"* and would probably donnate a lot.

*Office Suite = Wordprocessing/Spreadsheet capable of reading MS formats

Database: Use MUIBase, which is already really good
Presentation: Use Hollywood/Designer (maybe Powerpointimport/Export could be added)

@antique
loading in tif format already works... (sort of). Saving in tif format is not supported yet, and probably won't be supported in the near future.
If loading in tif format is a solution for you I can implement it properly. Just tell me... and give me a timeframe.

For now (in Version 1.3) you have to change filextension from your inputimages into a supported format (e.g. testimage.tif -> testimage.bmp). Use e.g. renplacer for this.

*iBatch thinks it is a bmp format even if it is a tif image...

Re: Scaling many pictures

@Antique
I would definitely use iBatch, it is the easiest way to go, as iBatch was especially designed for such purposes. It has been rated as "must have" for digital image processing by AmigaFuture. These features will help you:

- resize selected/all images of a given dir (keep aspect ratio).
- rename/renumber those images. Use scanning date for renaming etc...
- add EXIF header to every image (especially an embedded preview thumbnail can be added for every image). EXIF headers are used for e.g. fast thumbnailpreview etc. by LoView and other programs. Thumbs from Thomas Rupprat does not support EXIF Headers (which is sad...).

Please download Version 1.3 from iBatch website or Aminet. The one from OS4Depot is absolutely outdated. At the moment OS4 Depot is not updated from iBatch side (which will change in the near future).

If you are interested, you can also use V 1.4 which is not published yet, but a stable release candidate. Use iBatch supportmail (ibatch@web.de) in order to contact me !

Re: OS4 and home network

try pftp, as this one is part of OS4 (as far as I remember), try to acess your NAS via Windows, first. There is a ftp commad for your Windows Console/Shell. This one reports in detail what goes wrong. Always keep in mind, that for ftp acess you need a password and username, sometimes it MUST be set, as some ftp clients cannot cope properly with a "blank" username/PW. Transfermode should normally set to "passive" in pftp.

Re: a small program without a name

@Antique @Swoop
having Playlists is always a problem: E.g. your "small program without a name" saves you a #?.pls Playlist (just paths and filname to your song), once your transfer the songs to e.g. HTC mobile phone with windows 6.5 mobile (or whatever), your pathes have to change, you also need a #?.m3u format, plus the structure of your mp3 folders+subfolders will probably different as well, compared to your Amiga. Here the solution is:

Playlistconverter

Therefore this would be your solution swoop:

use list command from shell in order to write directory contents to ram:playlist.pls. Load this list inside Playlistconverter and converte it to m3u. You may also want to change filpaths and convert to "window compatible" format as well...

I would also vote for Playlistcreator...

However, it would be great to be able to sort and select MP3 songs via MP3Tags (Genre, Author, Album...), this makes it easier to crate a playlist. E.g. for Genre "Heavy Metal", or make a playlist of all your "Iron Maiden" songs sitting on your Harddisk.

I mean how can I, for example, tell it to look at the contents of my Stora NAS? In Windows I'd do: \\stora

Depends, if your NAS is SAMBA compatible you could install Samba on your AmigaOS. Window Shares (therefore a shared folder) can be acessed via Samba, however (up to Windows XP).

Quote:
Also, for some reason, RDesktopGUI says: ERROR: windowsbox: unable to resolve host

well, donnot know about this, but I always use static IPs, when Amiga is involved in a Network. Make sure
- that you use IP Adress of your windowsbox as host
- that remotedesktop connections are allowed from Windows side (but I think that's not your problem...)

Think "ping" command was in SDK, or was there one in Genesis or some other TCP Stack ?

I am not a network expert, so this is just what I would try first/what I did on my machine.

@djrikki / @everybody else having freezes on startup

- here is a debug version:
download 1.4 debug

- copy iBatch proggy/icon into your iBatch directory and doubleclick, an output window should open up and print some lines. Post last printed line here !!
- In case it doesn't print anything, try to run e.g. "../Plugins/addcomment-plugin"
- if you still consider freezes, try other Amiblitz based proggies... (see e.g. www.amiforce.de)

thanx + regards Gero

@djrikki

hm, strange.... I just downloaded/checked the archive: stack is high enough, also booted into an "british locale" environment... cannot reproduce your problem. Even if booting into OS4.1upd2 from CD, ibatch works fine...

I am on OS 4.1upd3 on a SAM440 mini. While I am working on a debug version, please check:

- Try using iBatch Version 1.3
- boot from CD and retest
