Failed to intsall OS 4.1
Just popping in
Just popping in

OK, it seems that I am getting somewhere since I solved the keyboard problem I was facing (bought a new one).

Now here's another problem. When installing OS 4.1, I first choose "run media toolbox". Since the hd is new, I am editing the partitions. I create three. One, the SWAP (around 1.5 GB), two, DH0 which will be used as the system partition (about 5 GB) where 4.1 will be installed and the rest as DH1 (approximately 154 GB) which will be used as the "Work" partition. I am choosing the options for every partition the quickstart manual describes: "Automount" and "Bootable" enabled with SFS/00 for DH0 and Automount with SFS/02 for the DH1, as for the SWAP exactly how the maunal says. After that I get a "fixed" and "Ready status" for my HD. Then I choose "Format disk" and my HD does not appear, only my dvd drive (as CD0).

If I skip this part and continue with the istallation and type "DH0" when the system asks me where I want to istall OS 4.1 then a requester appears asking to instert volume DH0 (you know assign, mount, retry e.t.c.).

Most propably I am doing something very wrong here but what is it?

I am thinking of Microsoft Sidewinder X6 or the new Illuminated keyboard by Logitech (both quite expensive). What am I supposed to tell to the store where I will buy them: Wait a sec, I will give them a try in OS 4.1 and if they do not work I will return them? :P

No. You tell them it didn't work and would like a refund. In the USA they are more or less forced to refund if you use a credit card. Surely you realize by now that most computer accessories are designed to work on a Windows PC and not to the specifications for a particular protocol (USB, Internet etc.).

Maybe in the US but here in Greece, when I will return the keyboard they will plug it it on a windows/ linux/mac pc and most surely they will see that the keyboard is fine. Plus every box says "Win/linux/Mac Compatible", so if I bought a keyboard with that description on it to work on a OS that is not designed to work with, then I did it on my own risk. That's what they will me and that's what I would tell if I owned the store to the custoumer.

It seems you expect USB devices to 'just work' which is wrong. The USB standard is very software intensive by design to keep the cost low. As a result, you'll find many USB devices are incompatible with many different machines. You'll also find strange behaviour when whatever system you are using is heavily loaded. Again, due to the software nature of USB.

As for your specific USB keyboard issue it seems the most logical thing to do is to buy/borrow another USB keyboard. You see, unless a USB developer has your specific USB device to help with debugging you may be waiting a very long time.

I don't have any friend with the new sidewinder X6 to give it a shot :P Because, if I am gonna change my keyboard I will buy something also good. As I told allready, my keyboard is connected also on my main machine, a win laptop. And since I am using it all the time I want something really good (and expensive)!

Hello again! Apparently no one has been able to give a sort of help with the keyboard problem I am facing. I tried connecting keyboard after kickstart has loaded. Then a window titled "Usb attachment" appears saying "Locating the device" and it has three lines : Vendor, Product and Class, none of them is fullfilled with any information. The system doesn't hang. Only my keyboard doesn't work! It keeps saying "locating the device..."

When I disconnect the device it says "Class: Multiclass" and "Done" instead of "Locating the device" but my keyboard isn't connected anymore!

Also, I have the latest version available of UBoot for SAM (1.3.1 Dec 1 2008 - 14:01:05), if that helps.

Anyway, I am asking, is there any way to contact Hyperion and request assistance from them? First thing, I do not want to change my keyboard because a) It was expansive and b) It is connected to my laptop. I was rather thinking of buying a kvm to connect it between my laptop and SAM but if I am forced of buying a new one then I want to know if Microsoft's Sidewinder X6 works with SAM because I do not want to have anymore compatibility issues.

Thanks in advance!

Installation problems & bug on OS 4.1
Just popping in

Hello, I finaly assebled my new SAM in a cube case, I bought a new sata HD, new sata optical drive and psu and been able to boot fine!

Now, I have two strabge problems that prohibited me from completing the istallation of OS 4.1 .

When I power up the machine, UBoot revognises two usb devices (it's my mouse and keyboard). My keyboard is connected to the upper usb port at the back of the board and my mouse exactly underneath. I am acting here accordingly the way the manual of ACube says. During UBoot startup my keyboard works fine. The leds are flashing and I can press enter entering the UBoot meny if I want to.

But when OS 4.1 starts up booting, loading the kickstart, my keyboard stops working! Whithout any reason at all. I have a Microsoft Digital Media pro keyboard which was quite expensive when I bought it, 1.5 year a go. The keyboard works fine with other machines (connected to laptops and Win/PCs/ plus i am typing right now from it :P ). The keyboard suits my needs and I am not planning to buy a new one (plus I have no room for a second keyboard and I am thinking of buying a kvm but that's another story).

My second problem occurs when I am trying to run Media Toolbox. My sata HD is new and I am following the steps the Amiga OS 4.1 Quickstart guide describes. First I load the slb. Next I choose "edit partitions and file systems". I enter the new screen and I press right click, chossing the option "load OS4 template". But immidiately I get an error saying "The file you selected is not an OS4 template". The thing is, that I have not selected anything because I have no time to do so. the error appears exactly when I choose the option "load OS4 template". Also I cannot do it manually (partioning, swap etc) because my keyboard doesn't work!

And now the bug. During the installation of OS4.1, without choosing anything at the workbench screen I set the Dock to have transparency, then I am dragging the left side of the dock to far left. Then the sytems freezes and I have to done a hardware reboot!

Yeap, that's true. I know at least two other Greeks that have OS4.1 with a brand new SAMep and haven't posted about it anywhere else except a greek amiga forum!

@Dwyloc

Well, mine has just arrived! It took 2.5 months but finally I will be part of the OS4 community (since I have missed the train of A1 computers).

Anyway, I first placed the order on 6 Oct and the product (SAM + OS4.1) arrived on 27 Dec (the day of my name day!!).

I just got my present!

I am sure that everyone will get their boards, just be patient!

Rude!

Oh, come one. The haven't complained because it's the first and only AOS that makes use of their ppc expansions boards.

Do you think that they would rather preffered running OS4 on a classic with ppc @ 160MHZ or on a A1 G3@600 Mhz?

What's the point of building up a new ppc that will sound and act as retro right from its birth?

And don't forget that the (new) ppc will cost around 500 euros (give or take). Then you will need a tower case, mediator, gfx etc. So we are talking for a cost around 1000 euros. That's a lot money for a machine that will have top speed @ 400 Mhz. Even without the tower.. just the ppc, 500 euros are a lot of money. They should build up something strong. Not a QuadG6@10Ghz but something adequate.

I remember there was a h/w obstacle that couldn't be overcome. Was it something about "bus speed"? It's been years I read the article..

There won't be any serious attempt from none of a well know software house if OS4 reaches at LEAST 10.000 users..

@Valiant

I have the same cell phone. If you bought it lately (I bought it 6 months ago) the firmware is upgraded and you can plug into the phone up to 2 GB SD RAM (and not 1 GB as the manual sugests). Also I have heard about some firmware hacks for the Z3 made by moto fans that could make the phone accept up to 4 GB.

Anyway, now that I saw Z8 in action, I am considering about upgrading again. In the US I think that the series have came at Z10 revision..

@tfrieden

Thanks very much for the answer!

I am asking bacause I took part recently in the presentation of OS4 on classic in Greece 5 days ago and I was amazed to see some TTF Fonts Antialised, video playback, moving drawers all over the screen with no major fallback of the system. So I supposed that OS4 was making full use of 3D hardware allready!

Frankly, I can't understand how the other way is true, I can't believe that all these heavy tasks were proccesed by the cpu :)

Ok now, who is gonna make a driver to have 3D desktop? :)

In the meantime, a few others and myself are updating MiniGL a bit to add support for a few more OpenGL functions. Hopefully this will give people something to play with until the MESA port arrives.

May I ask something else. If you get MESA, MiniGL or anything similar that will mean that you have 3D hardware properly? What is the main problem (except drivers of course!) to have fully 3D hardware capabilities?

I do not understand it, that's why I am asking! :)

And then, what else is needed in order to have that sexy 3D Hardware Desktop Cube or something similar on our Amiga OS4?

Hello!

Don't get me, wrong but spending 300 euros for a 8 years old ppc + 100 for a new OS (around 400 euros tottaly) without having test the OS previously (how fast is it, is there any benchmark out there for a classic ppc vs A1?) are a lot of money!

I mean, the ppc look soo underpowered, only 166 Mhz on an a1200?

The onlly hope that OS4 could really boost its sales on the classic line of amigas is a brand new ppc hardware on the market. Elbox should release that SharkPPC, personally and I guess others as well, would be more confident on spending 400 euros for a new ppc rather 300 for such an old equipment :(

Re: BattleChess

Hi,

BattleChess was THE chess game back then.

I started playing that game in the age of 6.

Of course I still load it from time to time and play a match or two.

But I have a huge complain, when I set up the game and place cpu above/and level 3 the game is slower than death!
I have load it from DF0: on an A500+, I have load it directly from ram, I have installed it and run it from WHDload on an A1200, I have tried to do the same on various winuae cfgs on the pc side but the problem resists!
I have downloaded the same version of the game for DOS and it?s even slower!
(Btw, accidently I had downloaded and the remake of BattleChess!)

Anyway, if a port is going to occur I hope that someone knows how to speed up the chess engine..

Bye!

Re: An Alternative Proposal to Amiga inc and Hyperion.
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hello,

I have also some ideas of what Amiga Inc should in order to make our platform more attractive.

1)They should settle up things with Hyperion and Hyperion should settle up things with them. No more lawsuits from both sides! That's ridiculous!

2)They must assemble a team of programmers which constant job will be to port usefull free apps into our platform e.g Firefox, OpenOffice and some games if you like. That's critical!

3)They must market their products! It's almost pointless to launch anything new on the current amiga market (financialy speaking)! Even if they have the best intensions, any new system produced won't sale more than 5.000 units. We must expand. That's also critical!

4)They must figure a way out in order to have software compatibilty with previous versions of amiga software straight from the new hardware. Minimig or anything similar is the first and the biggest step.

5)They must launch more than one system. Having a low end board and a high end is a good policy. Raising the specs gives you a better image on the industry. Also having a low end will provide you a stable and basic user base.

6)Give your product a unique identity, like the old amigas had or apple did with Macs. New stylish cases is a first step.

6)And for God's shake they must stop producing those idiotic pda, cellphone games. No one can take you seriously after that!

What do you think?

Hello, merry Christams and happy to meet you since this is my first post!

Well, I have done many thoughts about this subject for allready.

If it is true that a system with a 667 cpu, M9, 512 MB, HD, and AOS4.0 preinstalled (or just with the capability to be installed) touches the price of 450-550 euros is almost ok. The price isn't SO high as it isn't also SO cheap!

BUT, i don't know how will this system match up with a high spec A1. Because i don't wanna stay forever with a computer that will just make the work of serfing the internet and replying my mails. I would like in a couple of years to be able to play some (ANY) 3d game (e.g Gorky17) or work under a 3d app at last!

As far as conserde myself I will buy even if he price is higher because i do not own an A1. I don't know if i am gonna wait for panda to come out...

Sorry for my rusty English..
