@Raziel

My experience mirrors yours. 07-09 were absolutely the lowest of my life, during that time my Amiga was my general relief, although things didn't look good on that front but I did buy 2 x SAM Flex.

2010 has started so differently both on the personal and Amiga fronts apart from me not being able to download the update as yet! -:)

Never mind, I don't return to work until next Wednesday, I should have it by then.

I guess the demand on the Hyperion server gives an inkling of the ongoing revival.

Right now I am ripping a dvd to divx using k9copy under linux. How will it go, I am not sure and yes it will take hours but I am still getting a chuckle out of it.
The surprising thing is that it my SAM is not slowing down with other programs running (like Opera or Thunderbird). Good fun.

Good news, no need to recompile the package is available.

apt-get install gtkpod, there are some additional suggested packages too.

@nubechecorre

Don't quote me as I am no expert in these areas (perhaps ktadd can comment) but I think ffmpeg provides divx playback.

Add these to your /etc/apt/sources.list (one or all then apt-get update)

deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org lenny main
deb http://www.debian-multimedia.org stable main
deb ftp://ftp.debian-multimedia.org stable main

Also ensure you install xine-ui and libdvdcss2 (if it is legal in your country).

If you want to try and RIP DVDs then try installing k9copy.

Good to hear printing is fine. I have found printing and scanning (use libsane, xsane or kooka) so simple under Debian (and Ubuntu on my high end PC), much more so than under Windows.

@Cara
Type apt-get install gcc in a terminal and it will install for you so long as you are root, or try sudo apt-get install gcc. Do this in a terminal and it will suggest some other packages to install which may be useful to you, many are doc or help files but some other tools as well.

What package are you after? There is a good chance it will not work on PPC if it does not already exist.

Hope this helps.

@nubechecorre

How did it all go. I have Deb5 running fine but I will not push it anymore on SAM. Think of what you may need Linux for on your SAM (printing may be one), use AOS4x for multimedia and SAM for printing by saving to a usb stick, of course we need to wait for a better usb experience on SAM/AOS but it will come.

It is amazing the differences in the 2 OS', give AOS a little more time and the differences will be much more tangible and rewarding.

You want one??? You should be banned from all Amiga sites for the torture you have inflicted on this small community over the past few days-:)

Seriously, fantastic work, I hope you get one soon.

@nubechecorre

firstly are you running as "root" or as I user. VLC does not like being run by root. Secondly log in as root and go to System - User and Groups, check the properties of both root and your normal user name, you may need to tick some of the permissions (I tick them all).

Thirdly go to the Mplayer download page and download the PPC codecs and put them in a dir called /usr/lib/win32. I also downlaoaded and installed xine (apt-get install xine-ui).

Fourthly you may need to check the settings in vlc to ensure it points to you cdrom/dvd. I found xine better for playing dvd.

NOW be careful I have had heaps of crashes when trying to play flv and other media. 9 out of 10 of these crashes has non-recoverable causing segmentation faults across an array of software. I will not use the Linux side for playing video media only mp3 until this issue becomes more stabalised, remember it is an experimental kernel.

Right click on the and select open with and find Kpackage. This will install them easily for you. Of course I am assuming you are running KDE.

@nubechecorre

Go to this page and look towards the bottom, you can add the repository to your apt sources list. Or you can go to the packages (look towards the top left) and you can down load the individual packages for Lenny PPC.

Main Page
http://debian-multimedia.org/ if you use the repository make sure to download and install the keyring package.

Packages
http://debian-multimedia.org/dists/stable/main/binary-powerpc/

Look for libdvdcss2
Make sure you install vlc from the normal Debian repsotories as the one in this repository has a bug with an associated library.

Thanks for taking the time to post them. I am re-installing but I am still interested in comparing these files. I may keep a backup of the various for others that may encounter problems. Will discuss further when I am up again in a couple of hours.

@all

There are a few tricks to get Lenny working a bit quicker. Try these

1. Install "preload", this is a small daemon which preloads your most used programs, pretty nifty little program.

2. Use KDE, I have found this to be the fastest desktop.

3. Install Opera 10.10, yes this is the latest version of Opera and it is available on the Opera site. Opera runs quite a bit faster than Iceweasel, it also has widgets to add if you need them.

4. If you want to use Iceweasel (Firefox) Google "how to speed up Firefox" there are a number of tweaks you can use.

5. Google "how to speed up Linux", ther are a number of tricks there particularly in paging but STAY AWAY from boot tweaks, they will just not work on Amiga HW.

I have installed and re-installed the latest Lenny/Sam/Flex offering several times, mainly because I push to find the limits and find them I do. My latest crash was unexpected, I had played around enough and decided I just wanted a stable system. I transferred GBs of music and video to the HD, played a file in Mplayer, stopped , played it under VLC and BOOM! -:(

It is not all dead just xorg got stuffed up but I can't find a way of fixing it without getting access to a similar xorg file.

Good luck with your installs.

I have just suffered a nasty crash with the latest experimental Lenny install. I can fix it but I need an example xorg.cof file if someone can post it here. My xorg will not start because it cannot find screens. If I can get a sample output I can edit the file myself.

The file is found in /etc/X11/xorg.conf. I need it for a Sam Flex with a radeon 9250/128 but I will try others to get me up and running again.
