Re: A1 black screen

Just can't stay away

Hi @poweramiga
... im suspecting the actual battery holder...
Yep, 'Been there; done that' too! I thought it was too wobbly and making poor contact. I replaced mine with a nice one from AmigaKit. It has a much better battery contact design and easier to install batteries! I haven't seen any battery problems in the last couple of years.

@sadddam
...could you tell me how to take out u boot and put it back properly?...
Use a special IC puller from 'Radio Shack' for these low profile sockets. The U-Boot Rom is behind the AGP video card, so that gets removed first. Using the 'puller' tool, grab the U-Boot IC and gently pull it out; use electronic cleaner spray to clean all the contacts. If you have no familiarity with working on PC boards and ICs, I recommend you find some that can do it for you correctly.Warning!

Here is a useful USB info page:

Mine A1-XE was delivered with front USB ports never hooked-up right.

Hi @Dirk-B

Here is a ebay-link to the card.
I noticed that that adapter 'slot' spec isn't even mentioned in the ad. You should have asked about that? Hardware shopping for the Amiga is very hard. Every specification counts...
Could it be that this card is not compatible?
Yes. Some PCs mobos require 4x or better AGP cards.

Thoughts and opinions.

Did you just trip over your own tongue?! =:o I think 'AmigaKit ' is better prepared for point of sales of X1000s. Or am I wrong now? I've mixed-up the two names myself a few times in the past...

Re: Python forum and script area?

Hi@JosDuchIt

1) I think the question is mainly to have a centralised script area, where to upload snippets (*) , solved problems, interaction of Python with other languages available on the Amiga. Stuff that can help newbies.
Thank you sir for that great response! I was trying to think of something more clear to say instead of this:

@ Orgin,
...do we really need a python forum here on amigans?
Well, kind of! Consider the following Python program that was made available recently to Amiga called "PIL"-Python Imagining Library. The docs are vague about installation and don't have any info on usage. Maybe the up-loaders maybe could give us clues about the program if there was an official OS4 Python forum.
Is there any member using this software right now ?

INSTALATION
Installing the pre built version:
Copy the contents of the drawer Python/ to PYTHON:

Which directory? Any or the one called "site packages"?
Any Python experts in the OS4 house that can answer this?

After reading all docs about Apple and Windows, I came-up empty handed for anything to work on Amiga. So, it was a 'developers' package and has nothing to do with the general AmigaOS user, yes?

So, I'm just saying, from my POV, that's why Amiga Python seems bit hushed: too few are interested in it, and anyone using it is an expert developer somewhere else. So I guess I should change my answer to 'NO', we don't need a Python forum. Most of the time I'm totally in the dark with Amiga Python...

Yes, always was since the fall. I asked about at the Morphzone once about a MOS 2.0 port. I was severely chastised for having crappy A1 hardware. Amazingly, Hyperion went and ported OS4.0 to the Pegasos! What the hell does all this mean?

@JosDuchIt
There seems to be no answer till now why there is no such script area.
Yes, I noticed. I've been hanging back to see what goes. I seems very few members care that much about Python on the AmigaOS. It's a shame too.

Isn't this the feedback forum?
Yes indeed. I guess the 'main-man' is on vacation!

Hi @ssolie
#11
I'm not sure what you mean. Python has many books available and zillions of scripts are out there.
Yes, of course, I know that.

My favorite ASP hangout is here:
http://code.activestate.com/recipes/l ... _start=141&paginate_by=50

I think what i said was referring to and relative to Amiga Python, yes? 'ActiveStatePython' is mostly for PC/Windows. 98% of the recipes won't work in OS4 and therefore useless. I'm kind of interested in useful Python scripts/recipes on the Amiga.

Just seems like few people are interested in using it on their Amigas.

I'm getting that finally!? Sorry to learn this...

@virgola

...it does seems that there are no blocking dependencies (but I could be wrong)...
Yep, kind of ...

?Python: Cherokee has an administration web interface written in Python, so if you intend to use Cherokee-admin you will need this.
A Python GUI is seriously missing in our humble OS!

?If you want to make a build that serves secure content, you will need (Transport Layer Security) TLS libraries.
Have you asked Steve Solie about this. He's the expert on Internet security-- especially SSH matters.

Any volunteer?
No thanks. Why just one volunteer? That's a lot skills for one person or am I wrong?

Hi @cha05e90 and TSK,

Making a RAD: should work on OS4 as well.

Yes, it does! I tried it last night. From DosDrivers, I got RAM_0 from the RAD driver. The defaults are a 880KB floppy. I wrote some files on it. The trick is using 'RAWDisk' in Sys:Utilities.
I had it write the binary file to HD. I used the latest 'DiskImage' to read it and it worked fine. I even tried it with some old FFS files and it still worked. The only snag that may come-up is installing 'boot-blocks'. Normally, floppies are made without them; but have to be 'installed' for boot-able floppies. You might not need that, huh?

...having mui4 + reaction on aos4, will give us more freedom to do ports and code between all platforms, in compare with having only reaction).

The User Interface has been 'the issue' and weakness of the Amiga platform since the beginning of time. Commodore-Amiga really never did anything until Stefen Stunz came along with MUI. Now the problem began: it's third party vendor issues. Let me guess, he got 'stiffed' by Commodore-Amiga, and again with Genesy over the Magical User Interface.

...freedom to do ports and code between all platforms
That's a load of crap from two perspectives: if I wrote serious software for Amiga and i don't want it ported to everywhere. If no one wants to buy it then good, live without it . The other issue of ports is the poor user interface. Some of the Unix to Amiga translations/con-figs of the past were really bad. Why the need of a universal user interface? Isn't part of copyright the custom interface? I thought you already 'GNU' <knew> that!

I would like to hear Hyperion's official view on this User Interface issue; it's the main key to all the Amiga software. UIs, Ported programs, and Internet browsers have turned me off to the Amiga over the last seven years: 2003 to 2010. The AmigaONE was my first Amiga computer I bought brand new and wasn't what I expected. I'm not going to go negative here, my A1-XE/G4 runs fine and Amiga OS4.1.2 is great. It's the software to the rest of the world that needs a face lift. Or, should i say user interface lift!

Hi @Hans
...looks like not many people are using Python on Amiga OS at present.
To me, it's climbing the 'learning curve' that makes it slow and tedious. I try to write some basic apps like 'install a file' that was written in AREXX or BCPL using PYTHON. Ever since installing OS4.1 with Python, I've inspired to study it more.
A dedicated forum here could be useful...
I agree!

@SSolie
It's just so strange the topic of Python is so hushed...

Python forum and script area?

Hi Orgin,

Umm, 'Jackepc' would like to know, me too, why Python doesn't have it's own designated script area?
Python is over five years old in the Amiga OS now.
I play with it and try to learn to use it. Anyone else using Python?

And after having downloaded a python program, that could run on all platform, what I should do, for running the program ???
Look at the 'imports.' If the modules are not found in Python/libs then the app is worthless. 98% of Python apps won't run in OS4 and Python 2.5 because of 'modules'-- compiled libraries to the OS4 system.
OS4.1 Installer was a Python app! I would be curious to know how it was built. 'Me thinks' you have to have a OS4 Python compiler to do this. Y/N?

Re: Frustrating Booting Problems

Just can't stay away

Hi @acefnq

I have been using my KVM for sometime now but these problems have just appeared. Any thoughts or ideas?
You two faced hypocrite !

I've noticed that if the A1-XE is running and using KVM, if I boot a PC all the video presets are maxed in the PC; frequently the USB mouse isn't recognized. It appears KVM goes through it's own internal default video switch mode. It probably doesn't recognize the A1's signals.
IF a PC is running and the A1-XE is booted-up, it works fine; of course, it totally oblivious to the PC!

Don't know SAM Flex. If were to speculate the problem area, it would be SAM's UBoot IO. Anyway to work without USB IO? That might give a clue.

Yacas is an old version (and package) and i think it needs a fresh recompile.

Speaking of old versions of programs you've done and math, I would like to know if 'SDLBasic' (April 2006) will be ever recompiled or updated? I'm an avid user of it. Thanks

Gak!
Personally speaking I think the Sam460 will be the one most people go for...
I'm considering that! 2010-2003 = time for new one!

@ Helgis
...If that means July or August, is not certain...
+ '2 more weeks' + a year! I bought the A1-XE-G4 in May 1, 2002: it was delivered April 30, 2003; the OS4 'Pre-Release' CD came in July 2004. Excuse me if I don't get all excited about the new Amiga.

Hi @xeron

On Sam440? I have no idea. On my AmigaOne with Radeon 7500, MiniGL easily outperforms the software renderer.

I don't now SAM either...
I finally downloaded it yesterday; did a fresh install; payed 'Dickens' to get a decent configuration. I noticed that the sound distorted at certain screen-modes and mouse misbehaved. I fiddled a good while until I got a nice stable setup
My WB on the A1-XE/G4(Sapphire R9250) is 1152x864x16bits, but a 800x600 Q2 setting for 'software render' seemed to work best for sound, video, and mouse!
Played for a couple hours with no problems. Nice driver! Installed fast too.

MiniGL was crap or is it me? The colors were too dark to even play the game. Is a config. for that?

Seeing new softwares coming to os4 and new games, i'd like to know your opinion about future development of Amiga OS..

Veryslow! (Oops 'very' just bumped into 'slow'!)

#10 @ varmfskii
...the focus for development on AmigaOS 4.x should be on those things that make creating and porting applications simpler. ..

I always wanted to see a good native Basic and IDE for the A1. I like solving problems in higher languages.

#17 @ Swisso
...some form of anti-virus/anti-spyware and Firewall should be considered given the impending explosion of interest in our favourite OS.

You can't be serious. How big of a 'explosion'? I would say a million or more Amigans might start a ball rolling and it would not be a free service.

#25 @ Swoop
At the moment 68k is the only productive apps we have, and currently EUAE is not that user friendly...What will attract new blood/users will be the applications to do what ever interests them...

Yes, exactly! Hence, my 'hang-up' for a native Basic language to workaround too.
