for the point 2 i think is a stack problem. for the point 3.. use a jpeg static library..

In fact, Pygame check the static library so I think it uses it but SDL_image needs to be a shared object and my problem is SDL_image with libjpeg.so.

spotUP: I've download libJPEG.lha from your AmiUpdate repository (great idea !) but it doesn't contain the shared object.

hmmm i don't know where i got my shared libjpeg from then, but i guess i could upload it, as i have no problems with sdl_image and libjpeg.
maybe i compiled it myself at some point, not sure though.
i will have a look.

my libjpeg.so differs in size from the one on os4depot.
try it, if it works i guess we should upload it to os4depot.

I tried but that doesn't work better. I compiled SDL_image but it complained about unresolved symbol in libtiff on libjpeg ... I tried to compile again libtiff but I have an error, a usual one about conftest that can't be deleted because it is a directory (a bug somewhere in the tool).

So maybe the problem is deeper. Developers, please can you check if I am alone or not in this situation (I become crazy !). You can check compiling : this file
That would help.

At the top of the source, I added a comment to explain how I compile it.

Let me know if it works or not (ISI exception here).

Additional note : Be careful, I first compiled with -lpng but in my SDK I only had libpng with a file (a link) "libpng12.so" so it linked libpng using the static lib silently !
We have to know that if we ask for a shared object and it is not found, the compiler takes the static version. And here, as libpng is a dependency of SDL_image.so, that will lead to problems ...

no problem here. your problem seems to be a missing linklibrary or wrong order of link libraries.

try doing it my way and it should work.

also add www.amiupdate.net/SdkServer to amiupdate and let it check that all your libs are up to date.

i had to copy smpeg-config and sdl-config to usr:local/bin
and change !#/bin/sh to !#bin:sh in both those files to make it continue.

i also had to chmod smpeg-config it was missing the s and e flag.

pygame failed gracefully to find any libs though.
but now it is compiling.
i guess i could manually change those config files and tell pygame that i have the libs and where they are.

Having only looked at http://www.pygame.org/ and with the greatest respect who would want to play 8-bit games on a 32/64 bit machine?

If someone hasn't already why not start on Return to Castle Wolfenstein or that other one.

If I really wanted to play 8-bit games I would download a Speccy emulator and play the finest there ever was.

most works, some don't...
gonna try to find some really simple test game to try now.

WOW!!....
I downloaded some really simple games, 3-4 crashed,
but... a snake game WORKS! \o/

Time for the real boys to take over and iron out the bugs in python and/or pygame! :D MAN I rock! ;)

Resized Image

if anyone is interested in the bin/src let me know!

all games crashes so far are in pygames font.so:font_autoinit()

static PyObject*
font_autoinit (PyObject* self)
{
if (!font_initialized)
{
PyGame_RegisterQuit (font_autoquit);

if (TTF_Init ())
return PyInt_FromLong (0);
font_initialized = 1;

}
return PyInt_FromLong (font_initialized);
}

that snake game ain't using any font, so it works, all other games i tried crashed
in font.so.
I don't have a clue on how to fix that though.

Good job, glad to see this port finally proceeding after a long period of hiatus.

@djrikki
Pygame is not only for playing games, but is also used to make them. I think it's the first complete "environment" for OS4 specifically designed for games.

i need to pass the pygame build system the -gstabs cflag...
but i don't know how... :C
i have been trying for over an hour now...

*DOOH*

why didn't i think of this before.
i just built the crashing font extension manually now with the -gstabs flag...

ok, now we are getting somewhere:

15.BUB:System/Python/Lib/site-packages/pygame> addr2line -e font.so --section=.text 0x1364
src/font.c:120

this is the source file that crashes on line 120:

http://www.pastebin.org/571502

does anyone have a clue...?

Oh... the font module seems to be missing from Python.
import font and use font reports errors.

right, so i built pygame without font support, and tada, no more crashes.

7.Bob:Coding/Projects> python "pong v1.0.py"

raise NotImplementedError(MissingPygameModule)
NotImplementedError: font module not available

but on the other hand 99% of all apps won't run.
so let's hope python gets that missing font module added soon!

Two possibilities come to mind:

1) You are linking against a static freetype2 that hasn't been compiled with -fPIC.

2) You don't actually link against freetype2.

If you can build the fonts.so manually, add a "-Wl,--verbose" and see whether it links the correct freetype library.

EDIT: Right, what kind of crash? ISI? DSI? Can you post a crashlog please?

if i do this in shell:

python [enter]
import font [enter]

it fails to import the font module as it is missing,
doesn't this suggest that the font module from python itself is missing?

but sure, i will compile again with the pygame font module added and paste a crash log.

this is the output when adding those link switches:

it suggest that it links with a static libSDL_ttf.

"attempt to open /SDK/local/newlib/lib/libSDL_ttf.a succeeded"

i will try to make it use a shared version.
