Over the Rainbow

Cardiff, 25th June 2012

A-EON Technology is pleased to announce that it has signed a new development agreement with premier AmigaOS graphics specialist Hans de Ruiter which ensures the future compatibility of AmigaOS 4 with the latest RadeonHD graphics cards.

In addition to the HD4000 (R700) graphics drivers released with the AmigaONE X1000 “First Contact” system, we have now contracted Hans to create a series of drivers for the RadeonHD family. This also includes support for Evergreen, Northern Islands and the recently released Southern Islands HD7000 series. These new drivers, which are exclusively licensed to A-EON Technology, will support the X1300-1950, 5000, 6000 & 7000 series RadeonHD graphics cards and provide AmigaOS 4 with access to the latest in graphic card technology.

Trevor Dickinson commented, “This is a major boost for AmigaOS and is the first time that these modern graphics cards have been supported on non x86 systems. Hans has already released several updates to his RadeonHD driver and support for Evergreen and Northern Islands cards is already up to the standard of the R700 drivers released with the AmigaONE X1000. He has also made excellent progress with drivers for AMD's Southern Islands cards. Hans de Ruiter replied, "I was initially disappointed when supply of Radeon HD 4000 series became scarce but now I'm proud of what has been achieved. The RadeonHD driver once again supports some of the latest cards available." His comments were echoed by a long time AmigaOS 4 developer and A1-X1000 beta tester who stated, "Looks like OS4 won't have to worry about availability of compatible graphics cards anytime soon". We can only agree.

The AMD RadeonHD series to be supported include:-

X1300-1950 - R520 chipset
HD4000 - R700 series
HD5000 - Evergreen series – first released in September 2009
HD6000 - Northern Island series – first released in October 2010
HD7000 - Southern Island series – latest RadeonHD cards released in January 2012

Although the RadeonHD driver is exclusively licensed to A-EON Technology for AmigaOS 4, owners of ACube's "Next Generation Amiga" systems need not despair. They will be able to purchase RadeonHD driver updates via the A-EON Technology website for their Sam460 and AmigaOne 500 systems. AmigaKit will also be offering RadeonHD graphics cards and driver bundles. Please visit the AmigaKit website for more details. Customers who purchase the new driver will qualify for free upgrades, up to and including version 1.0 of the RadeonHD driver. Registered AmigaONE X1000 "First Contact" customers will be able download driver updates free of charge from the A-EON Technology website.

About Hans de Ruiter & HDRLab: Hans de Ruiter is an electrical & electronic engineer and leading AmigaOS developer and Amiga enthusiast. His website - HDRLab - details various projects, many of which are AmigaOS related. The biggest of these is the RadeonHD driver for AmigaOS, an ambitious project that aims to deliver modern graphics capabilities for the AmigaOS platform.

About AmigaOS: AmigaOS dates back to 1985 with the introduction of the landmark Amiga 1000. Today, under the guidance and control of Hyperion Entertainment, AmigaOS has evolved into a modern operating system without losing that intrinsic "Amiga" look and feel.

About the AmigaONE X1000: The AmigaONE X1000 is not like other computers. It is a culmination of efforts by real Amiga enthusiasts and developers to create powerful, modern desktop hardware for the AmigaOS. It is the natural evolution of the Amiga's PowerPC lineage and is based on the PA-Semi Dual-core PA6T-1682M CPU and includes Xena, a "Software Defined Silicon" co-processor. Above all it runs the latest version of the AmigaOS.

About AmigaKit: AmigaKit is a trading division of Leaman Computing Ltd based in Cardiff, UK. It acquired the stock of Eyetech Group Ltd in 2006 and quickly established itself as a world-wide market leader in the retail and distribution of Amiga hardware and software. A-EON Technology appointed AmigaKit as its primary distributor for all its AmigaONE products.

mmm.. is this a joke? a user have to buy driver video for the graphic card?.. just because a user doesn't have an X-1000?? and what about all the advantages that the x-1000 took from all the bug fixes and/or update realized thanks to the Sam460ex.. Only in the AmigaWorld...

After this move don't complain if people go away..

@sicky

Gallium3D is a separate Hyperion project for AmigaOS.

These RadeonHD 2D drivers are funded at great expense by A-EON for primarily the benefit of new A-EON products. However they are being made available for other OS 4 hardware as a paid driver. Every X1000 sold, a percentage gets allocated to paying for these drivers to be developed, so X1000 owners have already paid for these drivers in their hardware cost.

When you purchase a graphic card in a shop, you also pay for the driver for Windows/MacOS. Amiga companies tried very hard not to make you pay AmigaOS drivers. Now it's just not possible anymore.

It's only needed for a better gfx card than the 4000 series. And a 4890 does the job very good indeed. :)
And thses new driovers are now up to the standard of the 4000 series and below.
And 3d drivers have nothing to do with these drivers. 3d will come with amigaos update/new version.

i fully understand the point and your point of view but imho a bounty would be a better solution.. Hans would receive the money and all the os4 user would benefit from it..

@nubechecorre
It would need to be an large bounty which will take a long time to fill with the required cash.

This way means that drivers are available *now* for users to enjoy because A-EON paid for full time development on these drivers. AmigaOS is very much enhanced by having this software support in 2012.

Why wait years with a bounty and part-time development?

Important bounty would be reached in few time and everyone knows here, btw it is funny how the previous driver package was free of cost - for the customers - from acube and this driver also work for the X-1000 but now all the non x-1000 users have to pay for a driver video..

Well even if theorically that driver from ACube (after the agreement with Hans) is availible for all amigans in reality still availible only for Sam460 customers .. so for example as 440 user i can't download it ...

Still hope that once 4.2 will be released all of us will can use the final RadeonHD driver for free, or maybe with a little extra cost inside the AmigaOS 4.2 package

im not sure what you are trying to say about Hans, as he is the person that makes the driver. its coming off as you are trying to paint him in a bad light.

I took it as that for further drivers for all HD cards it was only possible to get drivers by buying the option?

Or have I just wasted some money?

@nubechecorre

A bounty would take a long time to reach: A-EON paid a lot of money for this driver.

The last driver 0.32, both ACube and A-EON paid for so it was released to every customer. It was not only paid for by ACube. A-EON has paid for this driver at every stage of development.

 Re: A-EON Technology secures graphic card support for Ami...
@all

Looks like this has caused quite a bit of excitement.

For those questioning why they need to pay for the driver, I suggest that you read the latest RadeonHD driver development log post. I've included some background information that should help.

Now to clarify a few things. Firstly, the agreement reached with ACube was only ever meant to be a stop-gap measure while we wait for AmigaOS 4.2. The RadeonHD driver isn't part of AmigaOS 4.1, but releasing the Sam460ex without being able to use PCI-Express cards would have been silly. It was meant to deliver a usable 2D driver. We've been very clear that 3D support won't be until AmigaOS 4.2.

ACube was very careful with what they promised, and they have delivered on what they promised. Overlay and 3D support were never included. I am truly sorry if you bought a Sam460ex under the impression that free updates all the way to 3D support were promised. However, that impression is of your own making. We did our best to make this clear, so it's sad that people didn't get the message.

About overlay, it is a nice to have feature, but the system will operate just fine without it. It was also never promised in a free update. More imporatntly, it is obsolete. Textured-video is where it's at now, and yes, that is planned for some point in the future. Exactly when I cannot say though.

Some people seem to think that AmigaOne-X1000 users are getting a free ride while Sam460ex users are footing the bill. Let me assure you that AmigaOne-X1000 users have definitely payed for their license. They bought a license for AmigaOS 4.2 when they purhcased their machine, and so this will be delivered to them. This also includes the RadeonHD driver, up-to and including the 3D enabled version that the Gallium3D drivers need. Sam460ex users, on the other hand, have not paid for this.

I agree that the situation isn't ideal, but it is the best path forward. It is the best that I could have hoped for given the current situation. We have two options, free everything that takes forever to develop, or a funded scheme that delivers software in a much more acceptable time-frame. The more funding is available, the faster the progress that the whole AmigaOS development team can deliver. It's that simple. I hope that you will see it that way too, and will continue to support the entire development team. Everyone is working as hard as they can manage.

Having support for some of the latest graphics cards availiable in a niche OS really is quite an achievement. I'm really looking forward to AmigaOS 4.2.

Dont be a granchy grandma. Like Windows and Office dont cost eur 300. Here you can get Hoolywood both versions, Page Stream and OS 4.1/4.2 prepaid and few shareware apps registered for that money.

Welcome to capitalism.

My congrats to Acube for securing future of AmigaOS gfx and some better cards for X1000

Gallium and 3D driver should be bundled with OS 4.2. For the rest, its a paid version (maninly SAM users) if they decide to stick with OS.

Same as bounty, its just fixed amounth

Thayt's really nonsense sorry...

Regarding Hans spoke I can get its point(also condivide his point of view reading its post on HDRLab) however the main problem was that A-Eon have press release the news as a milestone for Amiga users asking them to pay again(yes again) for an unfinished product...
I think that eas really better if:

- Was Hyperion to press release that(Hyperion will develop AmigaOS4.x not A-Eon that develop HW)...

- made some sort of paymnet Update to support that instead of asking money alone...really a much elegant way...

If you intend to buy one of these graphics card from this list.

X1300-1950 - R520 chipset
HD4000 - R700 series
HD5000 - Evergreen series – first released in September 2009
HD6000 - Northern Island series – first released in October 2010
HD7000 - Southern Island series – latest RadeonHD cards released in January 2012

If you have no plans to do so, write to Trevor and explain the situation and see if you can get a refund.

As I said elsewhere, I don't understand ANY of the complaints (not just yours).

Exactly how are users worse-off than before? Sam460 with Radoen HD 4xxx cards are still working fine, and no need to buy the new drivers. I believe Sam460 users get Gallium 3D with OS4.2 just like everyone else.

It sounds like you would prefer if no-one (X1000 or otherwise) got Radeon HD 5xxx+ drivers?!?

This is a project paid by A-Eon, to support newer graphic cards on the AmigaONE X1000, its free for their customers because A-Eon choose to give the opportunity to upgrade their graphic cards.

That you have to pay for these drivers on ACube's products isnt unfair, the alternative would be no drivers for SAM460 owners, so that they cant upgrade their graphic cards, now they have that choice.

Criticism is not a problem, actually criticism is crucial for development, that you are not a good news person isnt a problem, i think Chris made a very good point HERE.

It is more than a bad joke, because how a Sam460ex user buy the drivers to the competence? if there is to pay for the Hans the Ruiter's job I prefer to pay him directly, because here A-Eon cans make a list to users that we don't buy the X-1000 but we need the 3d drivers, and it we can problems in the future.... don't support to computers of the competence, you need the drivers, well, buy my computer.

But in the Windos world there is this situation for example with the drivers for scanners.

The situation is very very strange, is how if you buy a HP computer but the drivers you have buy to Apple, here the big question is are we willing to pay the Amiga users for Software, drivers, games?
because I think that current Amiga user think that AmigaOS, MorphOS, AROS is Linux, and not we are less and always Amiga has been as Windos of payment.

i honestly do not understand why put money into 2D Drivers (that are not complete) while Picasso96 (that is a requirement for 2d drivers to work at the best) is very very old and need to be rewritten from scratch.. I would pay for Picasso instead of having a partial 2d driver that cannot reach all the speed of the board for many reasons, one is Picasso96..Imho..

it's so great to have this type of quick development on our favourite OS!

thanks Hans & A-Eon

Yes, Picasso96 is old, but rewriting it from scratch would be a huge project. Both the cost and the effort would dwarf driver development, after which you still wouldn't have a completed 2D driver (which is critical for 3D support, BTW).

More importantly, replacing Picasso96 is something that is best done after Gallium3D is done and released. I'm dreaming of a future where Gallium3D is used for 2D acceleration too. That way, AMD would actually write the bulk of the driver for us (which they are more than happy to do), and keeping the 2D driver up-to-date would take less effort. However, that is a long term project, and requires fully functioning drivers for modern cards in the first place.

I think that I have explained myself well enough in my development log, so I'm not going to repeat myself again. All I'm going to emphasise is that, without the funding from A-Eon, you'd be waiting a very very long time for finished drivers and 3D support. In fact, I might have had no choice but to put the project on ice.

Whether you like it or not, this is the best way forward. RadeonHD cards and modern OpenGL (including shaders) will be available soonest, and we can continue building up the system from there.

@Hans

I am more than satisfied with your response over this matter and wish you had posted at little earlier as open questions remained unanswered and caused unnecessary alarm (as far as I am concerned).

I've better explained it here:

It is very hard to understand what point you are trying to make with your English, so excuse me if I get it wrong.

It is more than a bad joke, because how a Sam460ex user buy the drivers to the competence? if there is to pay for the Hans the Ruiter's job I prefer to pay him directly, because here A-Eon cans make a list to users that we don't buy the X-1000 but we need the 3d drivers

You seem very confused. The *existing* Radeon HD drivers on the Sam460 should work with 3D just fine (AFAIK). Just look at Hans' 3D demo to see that.

And I don't understand why it matters WHO you pay for the new drivers. Whether you pay A-Eon, Hans, Hyperion, or whoever, you still pay the same amount.

Very easy, the current drivers I didn't get work with my Sam460ex, and about the payment is more single to pay to drivers creator and motivate him to continue the develop and with this situation, you can think, Ok, A-Eon is fantastic pay the drivers for all and Acube well, they don't fullfil the promise the a good 3d drivers for theirs Sams, and this is the current situation, or not, and it isn't so difficult to understand with good or bad english.

What promise? (Gallium) 3D drivers have always been listed as coming with AmigaOS 4.2, which is of course Hyperion's responsibility.

FWIW, the 3D situation on the X1000 is exactly the same as for the Sam460 (as far as I know).

OK, that's a good reason . Hopefully AmigaKit's answer in another thread is sufficient for you.

@Templario

Quoting myself from above:

Hans

Thanks for all your hard work and the updated news from the horses mouth!

I have paid for the driver because I want to support the driver effort and just maybe a useful 2D update will emerge at some point so will be of use to me anyway. My SAM460 runs well fitted with my HD4650 card fitted and one day (when OS4.2 arrives) will have 3D support too

Even tho I intend to keep using my HD 4650 maybe there will be minor tweeks and improvements to the driver, makes me feel better thinking that will be the case
