I assume it's a standard USB hard drive?

Then yes, it should work.

I have a 500GB Buffalo MiniStation USB hard drive that I use for testing the NTFS3G port. It works perfectly with my Sam460.

I got my external HD (except that there i got a stor.e HDTB105SEK3AA instead of the CANVIO basics) and have the following computers that could make use of it:

- a sam440ep (without empty space to put the new OS4.1FE, but i will reformat the linux partition i think.
- sam460ex my main computer (OS4.1FE allready installed in a new partition) OS4.1Update6 still highes boot partition)
- a Windows7 laptop with AmigaForever & Amikit installed
- An IPad

I would like to use the the external HD as a backup for the different Amiga's system partitions & their user partitions, for the
Amikit files, next to (PC )user files for the laptop, Some Ipad user files (hopefully once including Amiga emulation, now available for Androïd, the Ipad was a surprise gift ...)

How can i best tackle the partitioning & formatting & filesystem choice & installtion.
Could existing Amiga boot partitions (eg 4.1 Upd 6) be copied and installed on the external drive and be used as lower priority boot partition ? (i guess so, any drawback or consideration?)

If you need to make a FAT32 partition for the IPad I suggest using Linux to do this as Windows doesn't allow creating/formatting FAT32 partitions over a certain size (once created it can access them perfectly fine though).

An NTFS partition you should be able to create with either Windows or Linux. NTFS supports large files (> 4GB) unlike FAT32 and is supported by at least AmigaOS, Linux and Windows (not sure about the IPad though).

Also, it is not supported in the AmigaOS 4.1 Final Edition versions of NTFS3G/filesysbox but in the latest beta versions Amiga specific protection flags and the comment field are emulated through the use of xattrs.

I cleaned allready the linux partition on my SAM 440ep
I'll create a new one then on my SAM460ex
What distri of linux do you recommend to use ?
I may start using it to program/adapt programs for non-OS4 Amiga breeds.

I have Ubuntu 14.04 LTS on my PC since a few years back. Haven't tried any other distros so can't really say how it compares but it works well enough for me at least.

Also at least the PC install disc of Ubuntu can be used as a live CD so you don't necessarily need to install it if you just want to use it for partitioning your USB hard drive.

I have downloaded Ubuntu desktop on my laptop
I am not sure wht exactly is the live cd
- do i have to burn this first from the dowloaded install file ?
- is it the BD_ROM drive (G:) Install ubuntu
& if it is this one, how do i boot ?
i see an autorun, which i suspect to start a install & replace windows 7
i see aloo a boot folder with subfolders (grub grub/X86_efi

Yes, you need to burn it onto a CD-R or CD-RW disc. If you don't have a CD/DVD burner in your laptop you can use AmiDVD on AmigaOS to burn the ISO file.

When you boot from the disc it will ask if you want to install Ubuntu or run it directly from the CD.

i didn't succeed to burn the iso image on my laptop.
I downloaded the image to my SAM460 ex & tried to burn with AmiDVD on a new dvd RW+

Pointing to the iso image and choosing to verify the dvd i get the message
"verify error: wrong data in sectors 0 - 31"

The readme for AmiDVD tells me

ISO image Burning:
- Doesn't support multi-session.
- DVD+RWs have to be formatted, but it doesn't support formatting
them. For new DVD+RWs you have to mount DVD+RW: and use FormatCDRW for formatting instead.

After a copy/paste the DVD+RW dosdriver from storage to Devs/DosDrivers the following message appears:
"MOUNT: Could not mount device "DVD+RW:" from file "DVD+RW": Not enough memory available.

After a reboot the same message appeared again immediately.

Strange: it certainly is not the first time i burn an iso-image
and never had this problem (maybe i did not burn since i upgraded to Update 6 ? Didn't we have to burn ISO's for previous updates or Update 6 ?
I am rather sure i did it with AmiDVD which was easier to use than Frying Pan or MakeCD

Of course my partitions ar not full at all

This doesn't necessarily mean anything. Verification fails for me too on my Sam460 even when the burn was successful.

Don't bother with the DVD+RW DOSDriver files. That's for packet writing support (i.e. using the DVD+RW disc similar to a floppy) and won't help you here.
