Photon Laser Tag 30th Birthday
Just popping in
Just popping in

Just spreading the word on the attempted rebirth of another 80s memory--PHOTON laser tag. If you're in the States, please consider visiting the link below and donating toward restoring the old PHOTON suits with new batteries and come down to Maryland and play. Whether you remember PHOTON and would like to relive fond memories or are a current laser tag player who has never played PHOTON but would like to, please help make this happen:

Just thought this might be of interest to fans of Commodore and Amiga. I'm not affiliated with the fundraiser, just a fan who would like to see this happen. The planned 30th anniversary weekend will be July 25th to 27th.

Minimig won't display
Just popping in
Just popping in

Hi all. You may remember me as the one whose Minimig was submerged for three days in the salt water surge of the Hudson River during the hurricane Sandy. I took suggestions from here and was able to get my Minimig working again. It had been working well since, however, the other day I went to use it, but I could not get it to display. There is a power light and a drive light, so there is power. Nothing has changed on my SD card, sme kick and bin file. Only other thing I might have to add, and I'm not sure if this is normal, but the keyboard lights do not come on, nor do the lights blink when powering on or hitting the reset buttons on the board. These may be non issues as I can't remember if they are supposed to blink or just stay solid. Any ideas? I'm wondering if this is slow corrosion from back in November, but other than an occasional issue with the on-screen menu, it had worked fine. I know the monitor works fine, because I use it also for my Chameleon 64.

Thank!

So actually, it appears to have been caused by a faulty Joystick. Somehow, when a particular Joystick is plugged in port 2, this issue starts and remains for some time after, even when unplugged. Wierd. But I don't use that stick anymore, and it's been fine since.

Okay--Update:

My power supply arrived from Amigakit. I cleaned the board with a vinegar/water solution using Q-Tips. Booted up next day, and it worked great--played a few games and powered down.

My celebration was short-lived. This evening, I booted up and hit F12 to bring up menu, and it was working okay at first, but then some wierd things started happening. F12 no longer brought up menu. Joystick 2 (I think) brings up menu by pushing up or I can press white menu button on the board itself, but it just freaks out, always scrolls down, like there is a stuck down key. So if I bring up menu, selector goes quickly highlighting D0 down through D1, Settings, Reset and Exit, finally sitting on exit. This happens even without the keyboard plugged in. I also tried with nothing else plugged in (no mouse, no keyboard, no joystick etc.). Does the same thing.

Any ideas what happened? Easily fixable? Maybe something simple I'm overlooking?

My beloved Minimig was a victim of the flood

Just popping in

My Minimig, less than a year old, was underwater for three days when my apartment got filled with water from the Hudson River in the recent hurricane Sandy, which hit the northeast US last week. I have not tried it out yet, preferring to give it a chance to fully dry out. It was not plugged in at the time. I wonder if it will work. I need a new power supply, because it accidentally got thrown out during the cleanup.

Any thoughts on the chances that it will be okay once it fully dries out? I believe the water at that point of the Hudson is either salt or brackish. Either way, there is salt on some level. Hoping it's not done for. I really loved it while it lasted.

I must say how disappointed I feel at the lack of news regarding the Netbook.

We need to get more people back into the AmigaOS platform and at the projected price, the Amiga Netbook would bring people back.

Sadly, it seems that there either isn't the will or most likely, the finance to bring the project to fruition.

I wish the netbook project was further advanced as it is right now, but you are putting too much hope into that. I personally don't think that a netbook will be able to draw a lot of people back into the Amiga market.

Can't speak for everyone, but I can definitely say that I'm waiting for the netbook to come out before I jump in. I was never an Amiga user even though I am old enough to have been. Even though I had a C64 back in the 80s, I never graduated to an Amiga. I became interested in Amiga OS recently because I decided to do a search on it out of curiosity to see if Amiga still existed in some capacity. I was pleasantly surprised that it does! While I considered briefly purchasing an A1 X500, I have no space for a desktop computer, and also spending US $1000 on one is outside my budget. However a $300-$500 portable would definitely be my entry into the community.

@ChrisH--Thanks! That is a wealth of good information, and it may make it worth my while to go the extra and get one of the SAM460ex systems with the 1 or 1.15Ghz.

@Mikey_C--Agreed. I would pounce on the Netbook as soon as it is available. I just hope it will see light of day.

Thanks! I appreciate that, although I do not have an account on MSN. If I sign up for one at some point, I would definitely do so.

Thanks for the warning. To be honest, all I do on the current laptop is surf the net and occasionally write (attempting a first novel) with open office. As long as Timberwolf is or will soon be a viable browser and there is something I can use to write, I could imagine it might be all I need. I'm also hoping that it will force me to learn a thing or two about coding and other things as well. I know I'd be coming in a bit blind, but I figure, got to start somewhere!

Re: Finding more Amigans

I never was an Amiga user, although I'm old enough to have been. I stayed with my Commodore 64 until I finally bought a PC in 1996. In hindsight, I wish I had been an original Amigan back in the day, so I picked up a Minimig, although I use it primarily as a game machine.

I've been lurking for a while here and a few other Amiga boards. I'd love to jump in with OS4.x and join the Amiga community, and the timing would be perfect, since my current laptop running XP is literally falling apart. I'd really like to get the rumored netbook as that would fit my needs for portability and price point, but I feel like I may be waiting a good while. Eventually, I might break down though and buy a desktop. While an X1000 would be nice, its well out of the range of what I would like to spend on a computer. Would I be sacrificing much in terms of performance if I bought a low end SAM board (667Mhz)?
