Re: PS3 port of AOS4?

@GregS

It seems that is kinda what Amiga Inc. has in mind from thier webpage, if infact, that is anything to go by.

Resized Image

Quite simply, I have just gotten a PS3 and it is everything the old Amiga was to me. Cutting edge technology in a small package with everything I need with a couple exceptions:

1. it has no easy to use OS.....or at least interface such as workbench.

2. it has no keyboard and mouse control is odd

3. I cant "see" it on my network neighborhood (shudder, I hate these MS terms but gotta live with MS) but that might be a problem with me rather than the PS3

AmigaOS on the PS3 to bring these elements together would simply rock, you simply do not need the kind of bloatware that is linux\windows\mac

I do believe that this networking issue needs to be addressed. I cannot share my files on the PS3 with my laptop or box, nor can I share my stuff on the PC with the PS3. The windows system is fine, but seems to run on a distributed network system rather than a file server\client system so you end up with files all over the place and organizeation is a mess.

The file server idea (and not to mention internet gateway and print server) is Ideal if done right. All files can be in one place to make organizeation easier, and if I want to play music from my PS3 which is hooked through my surround system in the living area I can.If I want to watch a blueray on my laptop in the study I can(without having bluray drive IN my laptop) and so on.

In this function the server must be extremely low power for 24/7 operation, stable, responsive and have some major throughput.

I think your idea has merit, but need AOS4 on both PS3 and some hardware of our own first.

@Mikey_C

You are quite right, the Amiga certainly does need leadership, and needs it badly.

Assuming we do get hardware soon, we should hope to see someone getting off thier butt and getting together a good solid software bundle of all the basics we have of distributeable software. Any machine is generally not much use without applications.

A second bundle could also be gotten together as well for purchase to support our developers, and so we don't have to seek them out.

I still believe that AA or DE or whatever they call it could be helpful in sustaining and growing the market if they would port it and make it native to the OS\hardware so that older software could be ported to it (and thus run on other systems) which would allow users of other operating system to use the software and get a taste, whilst also providing a migration path for them where they dont have to go out and purchase all new software.

Not to mention that this would also help support our current developers, and perhaps even expand the base somewhat.

I believe that the hardware supplier should make complete systems much like the console model, or laptop, to reduce the number of drivers required to be supported....with a couple of variations. Ideally this would be a laptop.

This could also be supported by the old nostalgic A500 A1200 in a joystick idea to give a cheap way to provide that old feeling back to people. I see Atari 2600 stuff in the shelves of JB hifi here, and elsewhere.

Last and not least, we need someone to go out and give us exposure, make partnerships, get things going in the publis arena as well.

As Mikey says, we need leadership.

I like it.You are right it does look clearer, however I think the fuzziness is intentional. I vote for yours though, looks a bit nicer to me.

AmigaDE, renamed AmigaAnywhere always has required a host OS to run on. Previously you needed the player (a virtual machine) to run on each os seperately, but it now seems this is "built in"

Atari was up until recently Funcom I believe. They had bought the name "Atari" some time previously and a couple years ago decided to cash in on the name and renamed themselves. Other than that they have no other relationship to the origonal atari that produced the 500st that I am aware of.

As for the new OS, well I can only hope that the hardware becomes available and hyperion get to make back some of the investment they have put into it before OS5 comes along, if ever.

I would suspect that OS5 also uses some kind of virtual machine technology to be hardware independant and that it is not actually porting anything from PPC to x86.

TBH I really loved the limited hardware systems of the commodore days as it meant it was much easier to optimize programs and drivers and really allowed the company to provide a user experience that was very similar across all products. Not quite was I was going for, but close enough.

This selling a motherboard business.....well it creates as many problems as it solves. I guess what would be ideal is a laptop, best of both worlds.

Or they could provide it in digital format on the CD and those that want to could print it out. Of course making the PDF A4 scale would help here then all you need to do is get one of those folders with the plastic envelopes, print it out and bam! one manual.

I remember those programming books that came with the C64, something like that also could be cool. I think those books, more than anything else, gave rise to the bedroom coder.

This is something I did not know.
Apparently Amiga Development India has purchased another company Ruksun Software Technologies Pvt. Ltd, or at least its major assets including staff.
Seem to put the kybosh on those oddballs claiming it was some kind of shell game doesn't it.

Loooookkk at my (hnl_dk's, okay, okay Marko Hirv's (sp?)) avatar!!!

That is, I would say, THE BEST case I've EVER seen! Quite sexy too, with the curves. Very lady like.

I think that a most complete, and fast, and quiet (passive cooling), semi-portable (not quite laptop) system it COULD be!!!!!

"Keyboard" and mouse (and joystick) would be complete system.... How about that?

Remember playing M.U.L.E.? Heh!

Oh yeah, I have long admired that avatar, and I agree with you about the system it could be.
I am amazed you remembered M.U.L.E.! Possibly the best game ever made. Crappy graphics, cheesy sound, but playability through the roof and just plain fun. Despite that cheesy sound, the theme music kinda got stuck in your brain.
If they ever made a joystick version of the cd32 or A500, this would have to be on it.

I was always impressed how much expandability was provided by third party manufacturers for the various amiga classics. This expansion set of the SAM reminds me of that and I look forward to seeing the options for it people like Elbox may come up with....especially in that sexy case.

So, does anyone know what happened to that project?

Although I think we really need something with a bit more bang, the expansion capabilities I find intriguing.

Just wanted to express my thanks that you guys have created this place, a haven from the flames insults and hypocracy on other sites. AW used to be like that, but is slowly slipping down that dark path by allowing the behaviour of certain people to slide.

I really cannot understand the vitriol these people have for supporting Amiga(tm) solutions.
If anyone has does not know what I am talking about, you can have a look at this:

Dont worry, this is a new website and much of the information is still being added. Dont mind Athiest either, after the problems that have occured on other websites he is a little sensitive.
I miss the old Athiest, brimming with what seemed like an everfull font of enthusiasm, I hope now we have this website he can recapture that :)

BTW the "Zico" spec has long been abandoned. It was discovered to be too difficult and too expensive for what would be achieved so they went with Eyetech who bought the referance design of a "teron" PPC board by a company called MAI. They modified it and produced the A1 which came in SE, XE and Micro formats.

Apparently there was some problem with MAI and they went bankrupt or closed down or something leaving Eyetech without the chips required to build the boards.Since then we have not really heard anything from them, but people like ACK and Troikia, and more recently the SAM team have all had plans for a new board for us. Hardware has not looked this promising for some time, but none of it is available yet. Elbox has also advertise the construction of a "dragon" expansion board for the classic stuff that does not use PPC but rather a NG 68k processor. This will not be able to run OS4 at this point though, but it seems that it is compatible with some of the other boards Elbox is proposing and that these will work in concert allowing the use of AOS4. It is not hard to see how someone can get confused :)

To be honest, I am thinking about getting and old 1200 and PPC board if I ever get the disposeable cash.

Not to worry, the avatar is a left over from when I used to play SPACE webgame. My "Alliance" in the game was called Rising Phoenix or "Phoenix Rising" and because of the phoenix reference thought it was also appropiate for an Amiga site Avatar.
So, no I am not scary, unless you wanto to face my l33t sk1llz in Space :)
