Re: help with amigaone g3-se

now things are a little better
I dismounted the board and had a close look with magnifier.
I found 3 points where the green wire reworks had desoldered.
I soldered them again and the whole board improved, the ide bus is again working
I have found that the backup battery is at 2.99V, do you think it's ok or should be changed (for the in-famous battery problem of the amigaone)?

so I made a reflow with my atten 858d+.
in the beginning the onboard ethernet was immmediately seen by u-boot
then I booted with the sata hard disk but I soon discovered:
1. the ethernet was seen but the Amiga would freeze as soon as I loaded the eth3com.device
2. the primary ide bus is no longer working
3. after many tests, the onboard ethernet was no longer seen by u-boot
now I boot with sata hard disk, but I need to find a proper usb to lan adapter, one that uses the ADMTek ADM8511 chip, since I have seen this driver is present in the ethernet driver list of OS4.1
Any of you knows of a brand/model adapter that uses this chip?
Or any of you knows of other usb to lan drivers?
For the 3com chip, in the future I will take it off and try a reballing......
man vs machine!

found the problem with onboard ethernet!
it's the chip that has to be reflown.
in fact if I press it while I boot, the 3comm is seen, and on workbench I can happily set the interface and go to internet with no problems.
now I have to decide whether reflow the chip or put some hardware device that keeps it pressed!
any advice for the reflow? I have the hot air reworking station, the atten 858d+. I think I will have to thermically isolate all the surrounding components, put some form of blocking on the chip and then hot air around 420° celsius, what do you think?

hi, thanx for the link.
regarding the IDE, well, I have to admit that downgrading to onboard ide once I have tasted/tested the sata...it's a pity! but I won't give up.
mabe could it be a u-boot issue? I have u-boot 1.1.4, I have downloaded u-boot 1.1.6, anybody has updated to this?
in case, I could buy a new eprom chip and do the upgrade on it, so if it goes wrong I revert to the old one.
but which type of eprom amigaone se uses? who knows

hello, Daz, what do you mean for 'The 66mhz slot, which has the wrong connector on'? what's wrong with the pci connector? Is it possible to fix it?
For the rest, I agree, no battery problem as for now
on board ide works ok for me, it is setted as automatic so I don't know what pio or dma is using, is there a program that check this?

@Draby and all the others (hello Draby, how are you? nice to meet you here too!)

AmigaOne G3-SE, 4.1.1 (waiting to update), u-boot 1.1.4
1GB Samsung M390S2858CT1-C7AQ0 HP 127008-041 PC133 168-P ECC Registered Memory, fully recognized
AGP Radeon 9200, 256MB DDR, working OK
SB Live!, OK
SiI3112, with new 160GB 2.5" HD, nicely fast
RTL3189, fully automaticly working
or
Nec USB 2.0 PCI card, fully working (with uhci driver disabled in kicklayout)
at the moment 80GB 3.5" IDE HD, master, and IDE DVD writer, slave, on primary IDE bus
whether or not I disable and disconnect all IDE bus, the on-board lan doesn't work, the wizard or the manual setting says it cannot find the device.
but
at cold boot, one of the first lines of text that appear on screen says: ethernet....not found
so this may be the root of the problem.....mumble ...mumble

thanx, no problem with the rtl3189, I do automatic setting and it works OK, it's the onboard that doesn't work, it keeps saying it can't find the device. I will try with a different version of the eth3com.device just in case...the one I'm using now is from os4.1.1. in few days I should receive an original os4.1 with registration number, so I will be able to download all the updates, but still I'm afraid it's the motherboard lan chip which is faulty
I have seen there is even a eth thru usb driver, I will try whether I can use a USB lan adapter, all just to have the PCI slots used with the important boards (SB Live!, SiI3112, Nec USB)

no way, the sanautil says it can't find the device :( I am afraid it's the mother board that's faulty.
actually,when the amigaone starts, in the first lines on the screen, where it says it has found usb controller etc, it says 'no ethernet card found'

it's the g3-se, the NEC USB card works OK, while the onboard usb has problems. it's a pity it has only 3 pci slots :(
narrow minded developers!
of course the xe users have audio on board, while I have not, so I need the on board eth to work!
I'll do the check you say

it seem the only place to put the gateway address is in the routing tab, but if I set the gateway address, then it asks me also the target address. anyway today I will do more tests

yes, the eth3com.device is in the appropriate drawer, in fact I load it in the internet prefs.
when I load it, I see that the dhcp check box is ghosted, so I have to put a static address.
up to now I have been using the rtl8139 and it has dhcp available (notghosted) and it works flawlessly. but I wanted to install the SiI 3112 to free the ide bus, since I know that onboard ide bus and onboard lan don't work together. (I have to keep a PCI slot free for the USB Nec card, since the onboard USB doesn't work) But, as I said, even with the on-board ide disabled and empty, the SiI3112 inserted and perfectly working, the on-board lan always says it can't find the device.
Apart from this, in the internet prefs program, there is a route tab, where it asks the target and the gateway. OK for the gateway, I know what it means, but which IP address should I put in target? the gateway or the amiga IP? and should it be setted as automatic or host?
thanx

help with amigaone g3-se

hello, I have been always late with Amiga! The first A500 I bought it on 1988, and all the expansions, upgrades etc. I always bought them after years they where out.
One year ago I had the occasion to buy a AmigaOne G3-SE board from Amiga center in France. 150 euros shipping included.
I had a bit of problems having it to work properly, but in the end, now, I have it working with Radeon 9200 256MB, SB Live!, Nec USB PCI board, SiI 3112 SATA PCI, and RTL8139 lan board, os4.1.1.
I have recently added the 3112 because I had not enough PCI slots to put all on, so I wanted to use the on-board Lan card.
It has never worked, since I used the on-board IDE interface, so I plugged in the rtl8139 and it was OK, but now, with the SATA 3112, I hoped I could use the onboard lan.
No way, still, after I have set a lan interface with static ip address (dhcp is ghosted), it says it cannot find the device (eth3com.device). Am I to think the on-board lan interface is faulty?
thanx in advance for any advice.
regards
merry xmas

Re: cardpatch and cardreset neededd in OS4.0 classic?

@jabirulo

I mean, does anybody know whether they shold still be used, if no hardware hack is fitted, or OS4 has them built in?
I have this 3COM PCMCIA LAN card. If I cold boot with the card inserted, A1200 will stop the booting, If I boot with the card not inserted, it is OK, then I insert the card, warm reset and it's OK.
could also be a problem of my A1200, which is rev 1a, some sort of incompatibility.

Re: how to connect OS4 classic to lan and internet

@Chris
no, the 3c589.device is compatible with OS4.0 on classic

so, for all of you who want to know, Neil Cafferkey (the author of 3c589.device)wrote me some good and working advices:

<< You *do* need pccard.library. I've read that thread, but the person who
said that pccard.library is unnecessary is wrong (unless there's a special
version of 3c589.device in OS4 that I don't know about).

First, you need to create the net interface
with a text editor. Create a text file with the following contents:

device=3c589.device
configure=dhcp

Then save the file as "SYS:Storage/NetInterfaces/3COM". You will need a
router or similar with a DHCP server for this file to work.
Then, to start up the interface, run this in the shell:

addnetinterface 3com

Hopefully, networking will now work. If so, please run the following
command:

configurenetinterface 3com offline

To get the interface to start up on boot, you need to move the file from
SYS:Storage/NetInterfaces to SYS:Devs/NetInterfaces. Be careful though:
don't put any network interface file in SYS:Devs/NetInterfaces unless
you're sure it won't crash and prevent you booting.
To use a static address, change the contents of the interface file to the following (example):

device=3c589.device
address=192.168.1.3
netmask=255.255.255.0

to add DNS addresses, use the Internet
Prefs GUI (hopefully it won't crash). When you start it, click on Routes,
then enter your router's address in the Default Gateway box. Then click on
Name Resolution, click New, and add your primary DNS server's address.
Then click New again and add the any other DNS server. Then Save and reboot. >>

for me it worked OK, hope it'll work for you too :)
Many thanx to Neil

cardpatch and cardreset neededd in OS4.0 classic?

hello again
when I had OS3.9 on my A1200, I used cardpatch and card reset in my user-startup to correct any PCMCIA problem.
then my 3COM lan card worked OK.
do i need to install them even on OS4.0 classic, or the PCMCIA bugs are already corrected by the OS?
Thanx

how to connect OS4 classic to lan and internet
Just popping in
Just popping in

hello, I own a commodore a1200 with BPPC and BVision.
I have installed OS4.0 classic.
I want to connect to internet as I did before with 3.9.
I have a 3COM PCMCIA lan card wich uses the 3c589.device found on aminet.
with this device it worked perfectly on OS3.9 and Genesis.
Now I have connected it to this PPC A1200.
The card is seen, since if I run CardPrep, it says the card is wrong type but in the lower field I read the correct name, type and manufacturer.
I open sys:internet and run 'new connection'.
the wizard starts.
I chose connection with adsl router (no userid and password)
I chose the 3c589.device that is the first in the list.
I click on test but it says something is wrong.
so I test all the listed drivers, just in case, none of them worked.
So I started the internet prefs in sys:prefs.
In the devices list there is no 3c589 driver, so I understand that all the drivers listed in 'new connection' are internala.
So I downloaded and installed 3c589.device.
as soon I chose it, the Amiga freezes.
I downloaded cnet.device and cnet16.device, chose them, it says the card is not supported (which is confirmed in the readme file).
I understand that the aminet version of 3c589.device is made for 630x0 processors, but what about the version internal to OS4?
Any suggestion?
thanx

Re: where is a no floppy drive click option?
Just popping in
Just popping in

@Slayer
and all...
I have still one doubt.
before I received my new BVision, I had to install 4.0 with AGA, it was a pain, since the default installer PAL screen is 800x600!
I decided then to create a new .ISO image of the installing CD with no .prefs files, so that there would not be useless colors and resolutions on a PAL installation.
The process worked almost perfect, just that installation stops in the end, when on screen you read that it is copying the preferences files.
Anyway I extract floppy and cd and reboot.
Surprise, OS4.0 boots OK, just a couple of requesters that it doesn't find something, but I commented (;) a line on startup sequence and added the requested drawer on sys: from the cd and it is OK.
Surprise surprise! now windows move empty and there is no drive click, as I like!
But I made this consideration:
If erasing all the .prefs files from the cd, made a no drive click installation, where the heck is the possibility to disable drive click in a normal installation?
Any guess?

Compact Flash and OS4.0 Classic

hello, I have this BPPC-BVision A1200 running OS4.0.
I am want to use a CF2IDE adapter, setted as slave, with a 4GB CF to pass data to/from my PC.
I have formatted the CF as FAT32, but the Amiga won't see it.
Actually, after cold boot, I have to do a warm reset, otherwise the Amiga won't start, but this is no problem.
If I run Media Tools, it sees the CF corrrectly, but even if I partition it with FFS, after reset I dont see any CF icon on Workbench.
Anyway, FFS won't work with a PC, so should I use Fat95? Ans how?
Thanx for your advices
