@Rigo

Creating an Internet connection in OS4.1. looks amazingly easy and someone must be *cough* dumb to choose DSL with authentication instead of LAN or not knowing how to choose DHCP (the option I have enabled), or even implement by hand the DNS, or not understanding where devise 0 and 1 is.

Right now, on an absolutely clean OS4.1U2 I have the cable connected to devise 0 (far corner port), then through Prefs/Internet I have created a connection which worked (selecting devise 0, DHCP enabled, provided a hostname etc), I have been auto-assigned the IP, DNS (double checked everything through router's page and through cli/shownetstatus), the network worked properly since I could browse the internet but afterwards, when I hard rebooted all 4 leds of the Ethernet Port on the SamEp are constantly ON upon SplashScreen and I get the error "Could not Open Devise 0".

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Anyway, I quote my self to anyone who can officially answer to me:

-> For the time being I would like an official respond from anyone who can speak in the name of Hyperion to the following:
1) How a user can perform a diagnosis to the ethernet devises, on a absolutely clean 4.1U2, in order to check whether they have any problem at all.
2) How can you identify the exact problem on the devise, if you managed to pass step 1.
3) Please justify whether you believe that the solution you will be providing matches the knowledge of an intermediate user or not.
4) Aside from the problem that have been reviewed on this post (since the hardware might be the actual problem), in all of your honesty, do you believe that OS4.1.U2 is in stable condition or still beta?

@ChrisH

I have already tried the steps you suggested. On a clean folder of Sys:Devs/NetInterfaces/ I called the new connection wizard and created a LAN connection and all I got was the above mentioned error through dialer output and the same error message immediately after rebooting. After the failed attempts, I did tried to edit the connection only to saw that the connection was stored a a DSL with Authentication again and again and again (even though I was selecting other options) requiring from me to enter login/password.

Again, from a clean folder of Sys:Devs/NetInterfaces/ I went to Sys:Prefs/Internet and created a connection. It successfully assigned IP and DNS (checked both through shownetstauts afterwards) but I got an error of "192.168.1.xxx (object exists)". That ip was my router. However, through OWB, I could play/communicate with the router settings but I couldn't browse the Internet.

After countless attempts, I decided to give up. Formatted the partition, installed OS4.1U1 then OS4.1U2 and created a new connection through Sys:Prefs/Internet. All went smooth! New connection created and I was browsing the Internet as well!

Then I rebooted, waited ... and on the splash screen, an old problem arose, all four leds of the ethernet went on, even though the cable was connected to devise 0. The old pal, the same error I was getting has returned, "Could not Open Devise 0" immediately after rebooting. No network at all after that.

I unplugged the cable and rebooted. It took twice the time to reboot (around 60 secs) but all leds were off. When into WB, I connected the cable, the leds of devise 0 went on but the network was not responding.

Again I rebooted (usual time, around 30 secs) with the cable plugged and at the splash screen all leds are on and the error "Could not Open Devise 0" again appeared.

*The cable has been successfully checked to be working on 2 other machines (pc).

To sum up, when the network was misconfigured I could communicate with the ethernet device (0 and 1) but could not set up the options correctly. After formatting, on a clean OS4.1U2 installation, the connection did worked but after the first reboot I am getting "Could not open devise 0".

Anyway, before starting a really hostile thread regarding OS4.1 I will go and check with Debian ppc whether devises 0 and 1 are in working condition, because right now, I believe that the OS is causing all these problem and not the hardware. But still, I am not 100% sure and have my doubts.

Since no one knows what the fuck the error message means, can anybody instruct where the fuck I am gonna get a proper documentation to read about it? Or should I call the spirit of a past Commodore Net technician to explain me for a protocol of 1992?

Does anybody know the answer to the above question? I tried creating the Interface via Prefs/Internet. i did it successfully. However when I tried creating new Lan Connection via the Internet Wizard, I go the same error.

Can anyone instruct what the heck means -> 5,10193, Bad address, Unknown SANA-II wire error 10193. I am getting the same error. I had successfully created my Lan/Internet Connection via Internet Wizard in my 4.1 (SamEp440 btw) but on the latest update I can't.

Re: Amiga OS 4.1 comes to new SAM460ex Board from ACube :-)

@Slayer

Well, someone from ACube has to officially informed people, like you, who are interested in buying that machine, because I really - really doubt that the current version of UBoot is capable of booting through a SATA port connect at PCI-e 1x.

A sata port won't release your hands cause you must be equally capable of booting through dvd-rom (when installing the OS) AND through an HD afterwards.

Right now, the wisest current configuration would be; HD connected on board's SATA (bootable), DVD on a SATA-port (non-bootable), Initial setup the OS though bootable USB (given the driver is polished and doesn't trash the memory stick like I am getting on the Sam440Ep). External DVD via USB will be way to slow and equally needs very good usb driver IMO.

If a future update on UBoot or a new version is already at work someone must tell you but given the silence I highly doubt it for the time being.

Donate 3 machines per each small gaming houses or indie developers. I can name a few: Frozen Byte (Shadowgrounds, Shadowgrounds Survivor [both like Alien Breed style games], Trine [Like the Lost Vikings game]), 2D Boy [best indie of 2009 I think, with nice puzzle game], Klei Entertainment [upcoming Shank - Final Fight style game], Amanita Design [beautiful hand draw graphic classic style point and click adventure]. Someone will be interested I suppose. Other than that, port the LithTech engine (7 years old already) and a team can port some of the Monolith's games. Gorky 17 would be a nice addition if we could get it on X1000 but I don't know the current state of the port.

Porting newer games would require a tremendous amount of work since many of them utilize technology that either isn't optimized on AOS4.x or it doesn't exist (PhysiX Engine).

@Helgis

SiN? No, no and no. This game isn't worthy of Monolith's legacy on fps games. I know, because I own, have played and finished them all on the pc platform. It isn't anything near Shogo M.A.D. (fantastic game). The NOLF (No One Lives Forever) series would be quite cool to have on the other hand.

Re: What Games Could We Expect On X1000?

If you are going to play a game and enjoy it, the settings used must be from middle to high end. E.g. Take two games: Alpha Prime (2006-7) and Shellshock 2 Blood Trails (2009). The latter utilizes more modern and advanced models/graphics/physics engine but my GF9600GT 512MB on my core 2 duo P8000 @ 2.40GHz couldn't display smooth fps over 1024x768@32bit with AA 4x etc on my 22 inch. widescreen while, on the other hand, I could max out the settings on Alpha Prime (1680x1050 etc). Alpha Prime was far more enjoyable than a new/modern game which had graphical glitches and slowdowns all the time. This can happen to an RTS or a TB Strategy (e.g CiV 4 was crawling on my Athlon 1Ghz GF3Ti200 and was taking for the cpu turn too much time, game almost unplayable).

So, if any game is about to show up on X1000 shouldn't be very very new (we have to think also that drivers won't be polished or fully supported) and the original game itself should be lightweight. For example Quake4 is not. I have seen it trashing many pc machines of 2006, so Q4 is not a good candidate. It was also a bit of mistake, imho, for Hyperion trying to port SoF. The game was utterly heavy on the pc when it came out! And the PCs of the time were far more advanced and had more horse power than any amiga of the time. Very good move was to port Shogo. Monolith has a good history in producing quality games which have lightweight gaming engines. Perhaps Aliens vs Predator 2 (from Monolith) could be a good candidate for porting or F.E.A.R. Alpha Prime is very good too.

IMO, there are gaming houses (smaller) or indie developers which might be interested on the X1000. I hope TrevorD donates a machine to the developers of Soldern X - that would be a KILLER for the amigans on the upcoming X1000- (the unofficial continuation of Project X) or to FrozenByte that awesome little finnish software house.

That seems a good idea. Maybe an option in GR to send a report, that launches that tool and fills in the blanks: kickstart version, some libraries versions, gfx card model, cpu, free memory, maybe exchange can be used to list commodities running in the background, attach a crashlog, and send the report to a "repository".

Also, after a crash, the OS could start with a message like: "Your system has come back from a crash. Would you like to report it?" If it is possible that, of course.

I absolutely agree! I have bugs too but a) Sometime my computer when crashes it also freezes and cannot send any crash log b) I do not know what and how should I describe it c) I do not know where to send it (contact perosn, e-mail address, website).

To anyone listing, please make a feature like exactly as emeck described it and of course amend it in order to be filled in with information essential to the developers!

Same prob with SamEp667Mhz, 1680x1050@32bit with the on board gfx and while having 25MB free at the gfx ram. The problem is when resizing horizontally and not vertically when the option resigning with contents is ON regardless the contents of the drawer.

Dunno. What is it? Is it a file browser or an Internet browser? Amicygnix is an awesome yet cpu demanding suite an Internet browser attempt running through Amicygnix will fail imho.

Related to thumbnails and alt:

Not sure that you will in interest to follow Ambient way (but why not, if its usable), and you can add clicable button(s) on the main filer window, which will mean switching beetwen thumbs, icons and alt. modes. In Ambinet there 2 clickable buttons:

First button: icon or list
Second button: thumbs, icons or show all files.

This is also the way Dopus operates nowadays in Windows (from 2002 at least when I installed it for the first time until now). I think that this root is the best to follow. I would strongly recommend to install the demo of latest Dopus edition and explore it for a month. Perhaps you will get more ideas..

What about read-only devices or USB devices? One may not want to create thumbnail folders on a digital camera for example.

Hmm, I though that there would be a *universal* thumbnail drawer (e.g inside the main installation of Filer) and for every directory containing images that should be displayed in thumbnail by the user, the corresponding path inside the universal thumbnail drawer would be created..

And with correct aspect ratio:

What are your expectations when it comes to thumbnails?
- Is it okey if you have to rescan the thumbnails every time you visit a folder?
- If not, do you want a 'thumbnail' work folder on your harddrive where the filer can store pre-made thumbnails?
- Should thumbnails be generated automatically when you visit a folder or is it enough to have a 'view thumbnails' or 'generate thumbnails' button? It can take a very long time, and use a lot of cpu to generate all thumbnails if the original images are large.
- Should thumbnails follow the icon size settings, have its own separate settings, or even be a hard coded fixed value (like max 64*64)?
- Should rows with a thumbnail always have the same height regardless of if the thumbnail uses the full height? (like icons currently do)
- Anything else?

(Note: thumbnails will probably not be available on pre 4.1u1 including 4.0 due to missing transparency support in the bitmap class.)

No, not rescan, put a thumbnail folder and store all the pre made thumbnails. There should be an option given e.g Always Auto-Generate and Generate at will. The size should be hard code and the rows should always remain the same.

I have installed the 4.1U1 on a formated partition with SFS/00. Everything went smooth on initial setup. After a week of using the system, I yesterday got for the first time a Network log out report when booting into wb "Could not open ppc440ep_eth.device unit 0 (Device/unit failed to open)". And of course cannot connect to the internet anymore.

My connection is established through a router and when I set up the connection everything was done properly (since the configuration was set up by the system automated). Now if choose "New Connection" I get the error: Cannot detect automatic. Please choose them manually (or something similar).

I was getting from time to time the same error with 4.1. beta too, but after a reboot or two and plugging, re-plugging the cables the internet connection was reestablished. Now it doesn't.

Btw, U1 feels faster but I am still getting weird crashes e.g listing to tune net, and playing with the right mouse button on wb (hitting it fast and repeatedly) my keyboard and mouse drop out while wb still operates and the usb stick which I have previously connected still works!
