Re: PS3 port of AOS4?

Just popping in

@AmiDog

I would even try to make an agreement with Sony so AmigaOS4 comes bundled for free (to the final consumer) with the PS3, with a little "fee" for Hyperion, say $1 or even $0.50 per sold unit, than would make an a nice bunch of bucks in the end Of course, if Sony is really selling the PS3 at a loss I don't think this could be easily done, but trying it is free...

So the question remains: are your and my A1s different, or are the DIMMs different? No one has yet compared two A1s side-by-side with DIMMs that work in one but not in the other, AFAIK.

Very true, such a test would bring some light to this obscure problem with mem sticks and A1, or at least some clue...

Quote:
Investigations are not helped by the complete lack of hardware diagnostics. In order to investigate such problems, we would need a proper memory tester, CPU tester, DMA tester, interrupt tester, PCI tester, etc.

It is supposed that the makers did all the above, isn't it? ;?)

Quote:
You can't run diagnostics at the same time as an operating system and expect an exhaustive test. A memory test program has to check every part of memory, not just a random block that the OS thought it could spare. A memory test program should be run from an external box that connects to the CPU socket. If you have to run the test program on the CPU itself, it should test a block of memory at a time, relocate itself to another part of memory space and retest from there, until it has tested all parts of memory.

I have even found different results with different versions of memtester, so go figure... :?/

Quote:
When I used to design hardware and write such diagnostics back in the 1970s, memory was small (a megabyte was unheard of) and a full memory test on 64kB of RAM would take an hour per pass (CPUs were slow then, too ).

The first computer I used was a Vic-20 with 5KB, so I know the feeling ;?)

Quote:
You could re-write the GPL memtester to boot from U-Boot and run stand-alone, but it would be a big job and you'd get no thanks for it. I've thought about it in the past but the need is not great enough.

That's why I did Real-World? tests, like many rounds of copying files to RAM: (different sizes), checksuming and deleting them, again and again, in order to find any error. Of course, I don't expect it to be a totally accurate test, but at least it has been intensive and filling as much mem as possible. As I said, no problems so far, but I keep an eye on it, just in case.

Have you seen this?:

http://amigans.net/modules/newbb/view ... ost_id=7531#forumpost7531

I have using my A1 with those two 512MB sticks inserted for a month, 133MHz FSB and 933MHz CPU (same that I had before, no changes) without a problem, uptimes up to 5 days.

Nice little tool.

I find the fact that it has to close windows to display the 3D effect makes the whole thing a bit slow, more when you have a lot of windows opened. I agree a Warp3D version should speed things up.

Anyway, and as I said, good tool.

My cat 'Apu' when it was just some months old:

Now it is 2 years old, and still cute and lovely

And a kitten I'm taking care of for some months, while my brother rehabs his house. Its name is Lilo, a four months old siberian cat:

Btw, your Eliska is very nice too

@Snuffy

Just go to MUI prefs on the affected prog and save prefs. No more annoying requesters.

@Troels

Thanks for modifying conditions. Donation sent.

BTW, you should make this change in conditions more public in forums, not only as a comment in a thread.

Bought my first Amiga, an A500, in Dec/1988, but I >sold< them in a store for months before I could afford mine, and I had to sell my CPC6128 to get enough money.

Re: Bounty (not coconut)

I'm really willing to contribute to Sputnik bounty, I already said that before, but I simply don't like the fact that the money will be donated to other projects if the minimum amount is not reached: if I donate to Sputnik, I donate for it, not for anything else, so if it cannot be delivered, whatever the reason, I want my money back, and I'll decide what to do with it afterwards.

If this point is changed I'll donate to the project. If it is not, the only option for me will be to donate only after Sputnik has been released (yes, I'll donate even if it's free then), but that way this particular aspect will be preventing me (and some other people too, I'm pretty sure) to help reach the minimum amount.

Well, perhaps another option would be to contribute when the goal is close to be reached, but again this would be preventing me and some other people to help reach it, instead of waiting for others to do.

What happens when you click on each volume icon? Do they show their content?

I have one of those LS-120 disk drives in my A1, and AFAIK they have never worked with standard Classic floppies (880KB or 1760KB). You can read FAT or even format a 120MB disk using FFS or any other Amiga FS (via MediaToolBox).

Duplicated msg, sorry.

EDIT: Amigans.net bug? I posted this message twice by mistake (IB yellow alert when clicking on "Submit", and it seems I clicked again), but my post count is still 1, when it should show 2. In my profile I can see two posts -including this one-, but post count shows 1.

A section for active OS4 projects, where we all could see how are they doing, with links to their main pages and bounty for each one (if needed).

Oh, a free beers section would be nice too... ;?)
