I got sucked into a very very old arguement on AW once, that was pretty embarrasing-:) . At least this add something of value. Iam using a very similar KVM but 4 port.

@gerograph
I think all drivers for all in one printers/scanners etc are installed by CUPS but I am not 100% sure. I have had previous standalone scanners found by Sane (Canon Lide) but not with my HP all in one systems, so I use CUPS regardless.
One other point are you logging in as root (which most of the time I do). Sane does not like root and may refuse to work.
As an aside I am replying on my Sam Flex using Debian Lenny - Iceweasel 3.5.8 and it is working better than the version that came with Lenny. I have also installed OpenOffice3 which works remarkably quickly.
I'll fiddle with xsane again and see if I can help out. I am no Linux guru but I have been learning it since I got my A1 XE all those years ago.

"Think about it of course it would because it is not a computer it is a games console. So they are basicly saying if you want a computer go ahead but you dont get our support for it"
That's not quite true. When I bought my PS3 it clearly said it will run Linux and other OSs, they made a selling point of it. By law they are covered with what they have done beacuse also when I bought it the small print read "subject to change". But morally this is very corrupt behaviour.
End result I will never buy another Sony product ever. It is like buying a fridge/freezer and 6 months later they decide they are taking the freezer away. Or buying a car and then 6 months later removing all the extras you paid for.
This is nothing to do with security but with pure greed of restricrting for content providers. Not only that they misled people by lies, saying they would NOT remove the capability. Sony are liars.
Shame Sony

@328gts Sounds very much that way, I have never recovered from segmentation faults. But wait you are not alone, I am having a problem, suddenly my network is kaput, looks like I have some corruption in the kernel modules but I cannot force a check of the filesystem using usual commands. I'll wait until fsck runs on schedule but I am sensing a re-install also!!
Anybody have a stable experience with lenny on SAM Flex/

Oops that should have been dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (note the hyphen).

@328gts Try this logon as root
killall gdm or kdm
dpkg-reconfigure xserver xorg
When this goes through see what the PCI number is, I suspect it is not picking up your graphics card properly. My card is at 0:12:0
when the reconfigure finishes reboot and try again. If you stll have problems try
logon root
nano
CRTL+R then look for this file /var/log/Xorg.0.log
see if it gives any clues to why it is not starting

PS I'll post my xorg.conf file. Are you using a SAM Flex?

@ChrisH and Raziel
Come on guys that is a bit harsh. many of the needed files are either stored in C for other programs to use or are MUI related. I just tried it and it worked beautifully (yes it would be nice to get rid of the startup DSI) but I just watched and downloaded an old Train song with no problems at all.

@328gts "any idea how to get flash working with IceWeasel?"
Flash is not implemented on PPC but from memory GNASH, I just stay away from it.
"how can I change the default web browser in Evolution links to IceWeasel?"
I use not IceDove (Thunderbird) so I am not sure. I'll have a play around for you.
Big hint: Go to the Opera homepage and download and install Opera for Debian Lenny. You will find an immense difference in the speed compared to Iceweasel.
re your xserver problems, you have installed the correct kernel, there are different ones for SAM and SAM Flex.
You are doing well and yes it is frustrating but keep at it. I have learned not to fiddle or install too much. Having said that I treid AlienArena, Nexuis and others..... they don't run too well.
I find it good for OO, printing and scanning. Even vieo off the HD pushes things a bit.

"quick question, I have to hit CTRL-D to continue booting up Debian each time and then it runs great....the start up screen says something like the SWAP file (my SDA7) is the wrong file type? failed CODE 8 etc....anyone know how I can fix this or is it something I can just ignore as the system runs fine once its loaded up"
Looking back on this thread, this may be a clue. Rather than hitting CTRL+D to continue you should have entered your password to undertake some maintenance
password then
fsck /dev/sdaX ( X is whichever your boot partition is, mine is sda2).
This will then check your installation and will require you to answer "y" to any fault fixing required, sometimes there are loads so be patient, although I am not sure you will get a chance to repair the original problem now you are booting ok.
Sorry but I am sensing a re-install.

@328gts Unfortunately this is one of the reasons I laid off of Linux on SAM for a while. I kept getting these sorts of faults which nearly always ended up in serious segmentation faults and required re-install.
When you get to the console Ctrl+Alt+ F1 (or other F keys) do you get to log in?
If so try apt-get update then apt-get dist-upgrade.
Let me know what it says, this is where my segmentation faults were identified by a number (most have been ur-recoverable).
Sorry I can't be of more help, it is frustrating but at lets you get to learn more about Linux as you go.

@gerograph "Any Idea how to get a Xerox 6180 MFP to work (scanning) ? Therfore do you now the USB chipset used in this scanner ?? Already tried Sane Xerox backends"
Try this Open kpackage (the kde package manager.
Under menu "file" go to find package. Search for cups. Repeat the search and install everything cups related. Also search for kooka and install.
hopefully your scanner will be found. If not use the printer prefs to try and find it in the list.

@gerograph Sorry you are correct dpkg-reconfigure xxx (--configure -a is used when an upgrade install has been interupted).
Also try apt-get install vlc ffmpeg (no capitals as I first indicated).
Sorry I am not sure if you can turn GDM off safely.
328gts Once you have booted to the black screen hit Ctrl+Alt+F1
This should bring you to a console, login as normal then type
killall gdm or kdm (whichever you are using) dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg (This should run you through some options)
gdm or kdm (whichever you are using)
Hopefully the xserver will reboot for you fixed up. There is really no need to run any virus software on our distro of Debian.
good luck folks.

Don't delete GDM (Gnome Display Manager) as this may cause problems with other software installed. You can ensure KDM (KDE Display Manager) is used as default by typing
dpkg--reconfigure kdm
I have experienced a lot of segmentation faults by removing some Gnome components, although to be honest I am not sure that is the culptrit. I also got problems using MPlayer and upgrading it from Debian Multimedia repository so this time I am sticking to basics and only using VLC and ffmpeg .(apt-get install VLC ffmpeg). All seems to ok so far.
You can also theme KDE by installing apt-get install kdmtheme.
Good luck, keep us posted how your install goes.

I just re-installed Debian as well using slb but hit problems the same place as you. basically the mount command cannot find the partition. I reverted to Parthenope and all is well. Just installing KDE now.

Thanks for the link.
