Re: ADRipper & CDDB errors?

Not too shy to talk

@nbache

gnudb.org may be another great option. Something I wonder
how hard would be to support.

Knowing little what they're doing, I wonder whether the proxy could somehow be spoofed through the "hosts" file?

Grasping at straws... ;)

Thanks,

@trixie

LOL

I guess I just don't see what more I want from a CD
ripper program. I'm a big fan of things that just work.

;)

I was hoping adapting ADRipper's CDDB/FreeDB code to make
it work with MusicBrainz wouldn't take that much effort.

Sorry.

Yeah, I just found an article on it all...

https://liliputing.com/2019/12/freedb- ... -free-music-database.html

...and found an alternate DB site called "MusicBrainz" that
is even supposed to have a FreeDB compatible API mirror...

http://mb.videolan.org/doc/FreeDB_Gateway

But (there's always one), that doesn't work with ADRipper
either. After "Querying CDDB..." it pops up the
connection error message again.

Bummer.

Reading the thread above, it looks like no more work is
intended for ADRipper...

Double Bummer.

It seemed to work great and I don't know why Trixie would
want to scrap it.

c'est la vie.

ADRipper & CDDB errors?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

Hi & Merry Christmas All!

Under our tree I got a little stack of CDs and I wanted to
get them ripped to all my Amigas...

But I'm finding with ADRipper (v1.13) that I keep getting a
"CDDB connection error". It doesn't if I use "CDDBP" or
"HTML" protocol.

Anyone else hit this or have an insight into a solution?

Thanks in advance!

@LiveForIt

Sorry, I'm not a coder, so I can't directly help...

But wasn't there old code in Basilisk or from Shapeshifter
which just called a SANA driver?

Thanks,

@LiveForIt

I'm sorry to hear of your disappoiuntment with Roadshow.

In any case, it's what we've got and while it may be old,
it has proven to be quite bulletproof.

I also apologize for not having been able to test your
new Basilisk builds yet - been just *swamped* with real
life. :/

In any case, I wanted to check to see if you knew about
the "VLink" SANA driver set and whether that might be an
easy fix for Basilisk networking...

http://aminet.net/package/comm/tcp/vlink

It worked fantastically well providing networking with the
old Shapeshifter. I also "talked" with Olaf and he said it
should also work with Roadshow.

Basically, it allows you to just open the VLink driver
as though you're taking over a SANA ethernet interface
and the mirrored driver then routes the packets into the
TCP/IP stack on the Amiga side.

Please let us know if you think this might at least be a
passable networking fix for Basilisk.

Thanks!!

@LiveForIt

Hi!

Should we get any hopes up you might be making any updates
to the old Basilisk?

;D

It would be great if some version of networking could be
made to work (even vlink).

I've always wondered, would any of the recent work on the
UAE 68K JIT, etc would help Basilisk? Please let us know.

Thanks!

Re: IRC down?

Hi Orgin,

An update...

I'm sorry to say that while the server is somewhat
online, it's been quite unreliable. Every few
minutes to few hours (I see no pattern), you get
kicked from the server which then refuses new
connections for a little while. Here's an example:

«Net Error» Connection to server "irc.orgin.biz" lost (Error 54, Connection reset by peer)
«Connect» Looking up host "irc.orgin.biz"...
«Connect» Attempting connection to host "irc.orgin.biz" (85.25.209.116) on port 6667...
«Net Error» Unable to connect. Error code 61 (Connection refused)

Any ideas why it might be misfiring so?

Thanks in advance!

Yay!

At least it looks like orgin's IRC service is back up and
running.

Now, what do we need to do to get the Amiga channels
mirrored/shared on other services so we can avoid the
current "all eggs in one basket" server situation?

/me knows nothing about IRC server config.

Thanks,

@orgin

Shouldn't it be possible to keep the Amigans server online
regardless of the whatever sickness is festering in AW.net?

Maybe there should be a set of Amigans servers instead?

Here's hoping...

Hi Orgin,

It looks like your server went down again around 11am US
EST and is again unreachable. At the same time, all the
other amigaworld.net server are still AWOL.

Any ideas?

Re: IRC down?

Hi again,

FWIW, I just ran through all the server names again and found this...

- irc.amigans.net = connected, working fine

- irc.orgin.biz = connected, working fine

- de.amigaworld.net = could not find
(ping said "unknown host")

- another user reported DE.AW showing up as 85.25.152.36
that connected, working fine

- irc.amigaworld.net = could not find
(IP address was resolving to 91.213.203.192)

- another user reported IRC.AW showing up as 85.25.209.116
that connected, working fine

- no.amigaworld.net = could not find
(ping said "unknown host")

- fr.amigaworld.net = could not find
(ping said "unknown host")

- se2.amigaworld.net = could not find
(ping said "unknown host")

- us.amigaworld.net = could not find
(ping said "unknown host")

- irc.polarboing.net = could not find
(ping said "unknown host")

I know some of these are ancient server names. To be so widespread,
I wonder if this was just dome DNS failure on AW.net.

Thanks,

IRC down?

Not too shy to talk

Hi all,

I've tried to connect to a number of the Amiga IRC servers
I know of, but it looks like they all aren't accepting
connections (??)...

irc.amigaworld.net
de.amigaworld.net
no.amigaworld.net
se2.amigaworld.net
fr.amigaworld.net
us.amigaworld.net
irc.orgin.biz
irc.polarboing.net

Anyone have any ideas what's up? Anyone have access to the
servers and can give them a swift kick?

Thanks,

Re: Kensington SlimBlade Trackball
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@Capehill

Hi,

I've been using trackballs on my Amigas for decades. Just
fantastic for high res screens - avoids all the mouse
padding.

On the classic I still have a Microspeed trackball. A few
years ago I found a company called "Clearly Superior
Technology" had bought those molds, replaced the guts with
modern laser sesnsors, USB, a scroll wheel and 3rd button:

https://www.amazon.com/CST2545-5W-GL-A ... e-Ergonomic/dp/B06XWLCLGB

I also used a number of Kensington trackballs over the
years. With the Slimblade, I found the whole scrolling
thing to be awkward to use.

Lastly, since scrolling over large distances is so
effortlessly done with just a flick, I've also been
running my WB oversized and autoscrolling. Gives me
much more real estate in one workspace. A fantastic
complement to the trackball.

Enjoy,

Re: Installing OS4

@noXLar

hmmm.. Interesting issue with fonts.

Obviously you are not using the default font on your
machine. Maybe you should try going back to the default
fonts to start with?

Looking at my OS4 install CD's font.prefs (in the System/
/Prefs/Env-Archive/Sys directory), it appears the default
fonts were all "DejaVu Sans" variants.

So I'd suggest to try going back to that and seeing if the
corrupted characters continue.

If the default font fixes the problem, the next step would
be to see what font you were using and why that one was
failing.

If the problem is still there with DejaVu Sans, maybe the
problem has something to do with locale settings?

Someone else with more experience there would have to say
more on that.

Good luck,

Re: Newer SSL certs on Timberwolf?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@magnetic

I believe the problem you have is that you need to have
applications that are NOT using the latest SSL (etc)
algorithms.

After the Heartbeat (etc) security holes, all the
security/encryption algorithms got updated. So you need to
be running apps with new security code. That code is in
the new AmiSSL 4.N versions.

AFAIK, the web apps that use that might only be IBrowse,
AWeb, Netsurf, and the recent betas of Odyssey. An
application written for the old AmiSSL3 will not benefit
from the new AmiSSL4 code.

Obviously, a 2014-2016 build of Timberwolf, an old Oddity,
etc. will not have the new HTTPS/SSL code and will barf
when it hits a website requiring that code.

Good luck,

Re: Installing OS4

Hi noXLar,

My X5K has a pretty mature SYS: (lots of system files
installed) and it's only 425MB in size, so it seems like
you should be fine with even a 1GB patition.

I'd suggest, you should just be careful about what gets
installed where. SYS: is for the AmigaOS. Make sure to
install 3rd party apps to WORK:, that way your "perfect"
AmigaOS stays clean, reliable & (eventually) updatable.

With AmiStore, since it's just Amikit's schtick, you should
install it to somewhere on your WORK: partition. IIRC,
there should be a setting therein to set where it keeps its
files.

Good luck,

PJS
