Re: Simple wishlist for next AmigaOS
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@kas1e
well if hyperion would do it why not, but it has been said many times how resources are limited and their time is better spent at modernizing the OS, so the first thing that should be done (by a third party) would be to further improve our version of UAE.

Who did our current E-UAE port? and... is there any chance for a newer improved version any time in the future?

As for your question, right now RunInUae handles ADF, WHDLoads and HD installation moved from your classic to OS4, if you happen to have a Catweasel (or if you "mount" the floppy image in a virtual df0:) those disks will be handled by petunia.
Which is good as what you will want to do mostly is running games, for everything else, it either run under OS4 just fine (TVpaint, Lightwave 3D etc.) or there are better OS4 native version avaialble (or there are better OS4 native alternatives anyway).

An "exeption list" (for what should be handled with which) is also possible acording to Simone Bevilacqua (author of GlUae another nice integration software).

Anyway, if there is "will", there will be solutions for any problem.

@ChrisH
I can certainly confirm that :)
DefIcons is a nightmare

At the moment changing the default "handler" for a single file is quite easy in the info panel, at least a check box right there that says "use this program for all files of the same type" would be great.

Then those files could use the default system icon for that file type, without having the (new)user fiddle too much.

@Antique
It would seem you don't know that RunInUae already integrates UAE into OS4, it's no work at all for Hyperion, they just need to include it as a contribution (with ChrisH permission of course).

Nice to hear, will be looking forward to it!

P.S.
By the way, any news from Lode on the progress of the aforementioned features (layers and free hand selections)?

@Chris
Alt+up leaves the "parents" all open (if you are going back, say, 5 levels, you will have several opened windows cluttering the screen which you will need to close).
Amigo1 sugestion works the way I like, if I could have the same behaviour out of an arrow shaped gadget than Bingo!

Re: MAJOR VS MINOR
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@Amigo1
That's certainly better (still not a match for a proper back button but alas...) anyway thanks a bunch I didn't know about it! :)
Now if we could link this behaviour to a simple arrow shaped gadget it would be done (how difficult would it be to do it?)

@ChrisH
Personally (while I do use filer) I'm not a big fan of external apps taking care of simple things that should be built in (things that should simply be a given), I'm not saying AOS has no way to handle such simple tasks, but at the moment, when I show it to friends, they all find it a little awkward (it would be more a thing for new/back comers in practice).
I don't think it would be difficult either, a minor update could have such improvements I presume...

@TSK
For me yes, for new comers/back-comers no. Look at that Right-Amiga+Shift+close button combination Amigo1 suggested, it works, but a I didn't know about it until now.
I understand some obscure combination or setting up a custom keybord shortcut for complex stuff only a few use, but a back button (even more so considering that the "effect" of the feature is already present) should be a given IMHO (and not just in my opinion, but in the opinion of anyone I show OS4 to).
It's just a tiny arrow how bad would it be?

MAJOR VS MINOR
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

I don't know about you but I would be very glad to receive the two most requested "minor" features (in a minor update of course) by all people I show my Sam to, which are: a built in thumbnail engine (no more os4depot utilities please) and.....a "BACK" button!!

Yes you know, you dig into a directory tree in workbench (with the "close parent automatically" feature turned on) and then have a tiny "arrow shaped" button close to the "iconize" one to get back a couple of branches if you whish without having to re-open the drawers from scratch (and without filling the screen with opened windows you then have to manually close one by one ).

Right now there is the "open parent" feature but it's a menu option which is slow and awkward compared to a back button (try getting 4 branches back, and see the difference between pushing a back button 4 times repeatedly and using 4 times the "open parent" menu option...) PLUS, it leaves the folders you were using (or "passing through") open even if you have "close parent automatically" turned on, as the latter works only when you move forward and not backward unless you use "open parent" with the the Amiga key pressed down, this will both open the parent and close the folder you were using, but still...... a menu option+a keyboard function key held down for thre or 4 times in a row??

It would be sufficient to have a new gadget "linked" to the latter feature/behaviour and that's it (how difficult might that be?).

P.S.
Ans yes add to those two, some fast 3D acceleration and we're done (Memory protection and SMP can come later in a MAJOR OS update).

Re: FAT32 improvements needed

Not too shy to talk

@Mrodfr
Don't know if it's relevant (and it's certainly nothing new) but I screwed up my 320GB external HD in my early Sam days (the HD was FAT32 formatted and previously "filled" using windows). It only contained pictures, videos, music and Rom/Adf images (for the various emulators) no windows software installed whatsoever.

Transfering files from the HD to my Sam worked nicely, but when I tryed to copy stuff from my Sam to the HD (it was a large video file) it corrupted the disk.

Luckily enough I had just bought a 1TB NTFS formatted drive for my PC and backed up the important stuff on it "before" trying.

Is this normal? And...will we ever be able to just mix and match BIG Fat32 formatted drives between Amiga and other machines without fearing corruption?

Thanks weather has been truly great around here in August :)
Hope to be more helpful soon, at the moment I don't have access to my Sam and have little to no time (as a matter of fact I shouldn't even be writing this and be with my head down working ), in a couple of weeks it should all get back to normal (procrastinated stuff you know :) ).

Can't wait to try it out, hardly have any time these days (and considering week-ends are still passed at a nearby sea-side town instead of home I truly had little Amiga quality time as of late),
Still think it should come as a commodity in the next OS release...

Not to mention there is nothing avaialble nor possible in the near future (such as a potential port of Return to Castle Wolfenstein and the likes) that would need the power of the Evergreen cards (nor the power of an R700 card for that matter) so if you work on them later on, nobody will notice

@kas1e
Well, at least we know he will eventually do it. If free hand "cuts" will come later than a good new feature would at least be layers that can blend whole images (at least I could mix up multi-pass renderings that way ).

@kas1e
One thing he should work on before layers is the free hand (or better, "point to point") selection mode. There anin't much use for layers if you can't blend different (freely movable and "stretchable") selections using them. The current method using masks is kind of clumsy IMHO.
Once we have proper selections, all we need is the possibility to put them over different layers and composite a single image using different blending modes...

hehe, RtCW is one of my favorite (TOP 5) fps of all time, great atmosphere and tight gameplay (not to mention that at MAX settings it's still a looker even today).

Sounds like one of those projects Andrea (afxGroup) would jump on immediately (right?

Ok for the colors :)

As for the rest, yeah I would like someone like Mason to do the rest, close buttons, sliders, check-box etc.

In the end (with layers and all) I'm sure this app will turn up great!

P.S.
Broadblues added an Arrex port to Blender (I believe our version is the only one to have it) can it be done in lodepaint too?

@kas1e
Hi there! Just managed to try the latest version and all I can say is...I like it!

Now that we know layers are coming and that hopes are up for better 3D drivers (with hans work and all) all that's missing is a nicer look.

Let's be frank here, those brownish/orange top bars are unlookable.

I'm using the DarkGray Amiboing LightUp theme right now, but simple blue bars with amiga-like close buttons (the "square" you know) would be enough.

Best thing would be to have these bars in several colors at least to match the color of the installed skin (such as blu, silver green,dark grey and so on), all with amiga-like close buttons of course.

Can it be done?

@Fab
The major difference would be for developers (users know very little about underlying GUI processes), and we are not talking about the whole OS anyway just the GUI tools.
QT is not "connected" to any platform in particular (you can't call it "MAC" nor "Linux") and you could use it on Amiga without alienating end users.
