Thank you very much for the donation, Kevin! My plan is to develop the recording module before the summer.

Yes for recording from the turntable preamp's output. No for recording via USB.

Re: WB boot hangups - a solution
Amigans Defender
Amigans Defender

I used to have a slightly different WB boot problem. More often than not, my X5000 would boot into an empty grey screen with an empty screenbar.

I removed X-Dock from WBstartup but the problem persisted. In the end it turned out that, over time, I had installed a few AHI drivers for cards I don't use, and one of these seems to have been causing the hang-up. Since I removed all unnecessary drivers from DEVS:AHI and DEVS:AudioModes, I've never had such a problem.

@benny

At any rate, what we need is a design that is as simple and standard as possible, like what geennaam has suggested. Only then can you keep the production price reasonable, given the low quantities. One other important aspect is that such boards would be easier to diagnose and repair in case of a failure. Ever been wondering why so few users have been successful in getting their NG machine repaired? That teaches us for believing that a custom design containing non-standard stuff (such as the Xena/Xorro) is what defines the Amiga. We should learn from that lesson.

The Sam460LE is certainly a step in the right direction. Too bad it's a dated design, based on a machine that wasn't ACube's best model.

I just can't see AmigaOS4.1 conquering the world anytime soon

Neither can I But that's not the plan; AmigaOS4 is a retroplatform like any other, only with certain benefits such as modern graphics and accelerated video playback.

Quote:
Sure x5000 is faster, but what I'm going to use that speed for?

It's a common fallacy (especially popular among the Classic Amiga crowd) that NG systems don't bring any software that makes use of the power of the hardware. To appreciate the X5000, try anything that involves working with high-definition audio, for example. Like Rave, to blow my own trumpet

Quote:
My Sam460 is very small comparing x5000. Why do I need 7 PCI/PCIE slots?

Yes, I agree - the X5000 is too big, which limits the user's choice of chassis (especially if you're after a desktop case). They should have stayed with the original MicroATX format of the prototype.

That gap between x5000 and Sam460 is really small when you put it in that perspective.

The X5000 has faster memory (DDR3 compared to the Sam460's DDR2). Also, I don't think that the Sam460LE can take more than 2GB of physical memory (the Sam460ex couldn't), which limits the machine in the use of Exec's Extended Memory framework.

The X5000 is dual-core and soon will be the first Amiga system to benefit from the multicore kernel that is being developed. Also, the X5000 has cache coherency and thus allows GART, giving it an advantage over the Sam460 in the graphics department as well. So no, I can't really agree that the machines are comparable.

I keep saying the same

Seeing that GGS-Data still has an X5000/020 listed, I'd most likely go and get it if I didn't already own one. The prices of lower-end models such as the Sam460LE and the upcoming A1222 have skyrocketed due to the chip crisis, which makes the high-end machines suddenly look more appealing. Yes, 2000 EUR is bonkers, but 1000 EUR for the sub-par Sam460LE is even more insane.

@ktadd

The Save function now (i.e. in the upcoming version 1.6) works as follows:

- If the project was loaded from a file format that is also supported for saving (such as WAV or AIFF), the Save function will save the file immediately. As I said, this is the standard and expected behaviour. An "Always confirm save" prefs option may be introduced at a later point to help prevent accidental overwrites.
- If the project was loaded from a file format that is not supported for saving (such as VOX or AU), the function will bring up the Save As requester so that the user can choose and configure the target format.
- If the project was loaded from a compressed file format such as MP3 or FLAC, the Save function will first bring up a configuration window for the respective format so that the user can configure the compression parameters. The window also has a Cancel button, so the saving can be cancelled at this point if needed.

A lot of improvement since the current public version I think

a way for the user to select a specific fixed bitrate would be good

It surely would, but unfortunately, the I/O library Rave uses doesn't support that It only allows setting an abstract "compression level" as a value between 0 and 1.0, which the library internally maps to a bitrate value. So I don't have much control over that. Even if I find out that, for example, compression level 6.0 corresponds to 128kpbs for a 44.1kHz file, it will be a different bitrate for a lower-frequency file. So I can't just offer a selector in Rave with pre-defined bitrate values to choose from.

@ktadd

Thanks for trying out the new version, Kevin!

Quote:
I clicked it and the waveform was saved over the original without warning, which suprised me a bit.

This is normal and expected behaviour for the Save function. You don't want a "File has been modified!" warning requester here because it's understood - the Save function only becomes available when the file has been modified. But I'm thinking about bringing up the Save As file requester in this situation for lossy formats, so that the user can configure them before saving.

Quote:
Checking the bitrate I saw that it had been changed to 32k.

The problem is that libsndfile doesn't support saving at a user-specified bitrate. You can only set Encoding Quality for variable bitrates, or choose from a selection of fixed bitrates as provided by the library. From what you've described, I think the problem is that my code invokes Save using the default encoding options, instead of trying to configure them closer to the original bitrate. I'll have a look - until then, please use Save As
