I think my connection is like 8 megs a sec or supposed to be but the thing that I find incredible about these types of conversations is in actual reality how many servers do you use that can maintain a speed anywhere near 20 megs a sec or even 8 megs a sec

Even a local network probably requires special interfaces?

I haven't found one and it's a good thing too, I max out my 30 gig download limit per month quite easily in 3-4 good days of leeching... then it's $2 for each additional gig... at the peak of my uncontrolled downloading I was averaging $400 a month internet bills...

adios!

like I keep saying making things cheaper etc etc just makes more people unsatisfied with things... ya think you'd care about 20 megs a sec if it cost you $2 a meg and you had an average job and had a family to feed...

anyway, this is WAY off topic

Yes, I used to keep a formatted but non-installed disk in my drives too. OS would boot up take a moment to recognise the disk then proceed. Of course, again it would need to load it to workbench as well.

Not exactly rocket science or cpu friendly but will work while you track down a real solution

Are you just talking about "turning it off" via the DPMS control? On my blanker, Shift-F1 blanks the screen, and Shift-F2 turns the monitor off this way. If you don't want it to blank at other times, you can control the blanker timeouts also. That and the hotkeys are setup in the ScreenBlanker prefs that comes with the OS.

Are you serious? Shift-F2 sounds exactly what I need-can anyone confirm this to work on the SAM? Trouble is I'm thinking one would need to double click on the Blanker to start the program then hit Shift-F2 depending whether you can do it immediately and even then the Blanker program will always been running in the back ground too, after that first instance.

Guess I'm too much of a purist and like to control the OS too much

thanks for this though Swoodall, it might just do in the meantime but I'm still hoping for a cleaner solution

@Shadow

If doesn't seem to have an off function. Turns off when the cpu is turned off and turns on when it gets a signal.

trust me, I've searched the menus!

just like my 50" plasma, I never leave it going unless I am there, turn it off with remote... etc

All I need is a command to turn a LSD off and another to turn it on again. Then I can just script it with whatever, waitLMB etc kind of programs already exist, although I do hope they are OS4 compliant...

help, I do not know arexx and then wouldn't I have to have arexx running all the time too...

Code

Turn Monitor Off
WaitLMB
Turn Monitor On
Exit

even this would be good!

LCD Montior Off on demand

I like the fact that screen blanker turns the LCD off at some stage after some given time while running a blanker display.

I do however want to remove it from wbstartup

I decided to try and look for something that exists that'll turn the monitor off after double clicking (say 3 secs later? allowing you time to release the mouse) and again reactivate after a movement or keystroke but then exit the program-the user having to double click the icon again to start the process over again...

something like? (I cut from the web after a fast glance, I know it probably isn't Amiga code but it's the idea that counts)

RunProgram(turnOff_LCD in 3 secs)
Loop
Until mouse moved or key pressed
RunProgram(turnOn_LCD and exit program)

I guess perhaps a open source solution is out there but I haven't installed sdk yet anyway...

anyone feel like coding something like this and uploading it to depot? (heh cheeky) or pointing me in the right direction to find something that'll do what I want...

perhaps the blanker could be set to do just this, I have no idea... sorry for the ignorance

thanks

I thought that it was possible some of the feautures my keyboard has (e.g zooming in/out) to be disabled due the absense of drivers but I wasn't prepared to see that it was not working at all! If that's the case with usb devices on AOS 4.1 then how am I supposed to know if a usb device will work or not? I am thinking of Microsoft Sidewinder X6 or the new Illuminated keyboard by Logitech (both quite expensive). What am I supposed to tell to the store where I will buy them: Wait a sec, I will give them a try in OS 4.1 and if they do not work I will return them? :P

I was using the same keyboard and mouse I had used on the A1 (both white in colour). But then I brought a nice black AOC 22" LCD to go with the nice new black Tower which held SAM. I decided I needed a new black keyboard and mouse. The mouse was fine but the new black keyboard (that I hadn't realised at the time) had only one window key so I couldn't soft reboot my machine or paste with window+v. I am aware there are remapping functions but the white keyboard just worked, I am now in the process of acquiring the same keyboard but in black.

Moral of the story;

1) doesn't matter if ya black or white
2) It's not just the type of keyboard it's the layout

@BrandonLee, Gebrochen, pvanni

Hey Guys, thanks for the overviews.

I came across one of my backup disks that has two versions of Imagine, later ones I believe 5.x but I can't be certain... I have most versions on floppy but who knows where they reside in the cpu room

both gave me a GR when I double clicked

I don't have the WarpOS installed as of yet, I didn't really have any intention of installing any version of Imagine at the moment. I want the SDK and associated things on the harddrive first, darn 'The Last Remnant' took up the weekend, finished it last night ANYWAY sorry...

Just quickly, there any check list you guys encountered as you tried to make Imagine as comfortable as can be on your OS4.x systems?

I can use anything you list as potential trouble shooting when the time comes for me to walk that path...

thanks!

It is a nice browser and fine work Joerg!

Not sure if this means anything but recently I was browsing this site and decided I might as well put up an avatar.

Went to upload one in 'view account' clicking on 'avatar' button

In OWB 3.4 nothing happened I used IBrowse with Java on. Small thing I'm sure.

greetings there

I dabbled quite alot in this area too, trouble is AmigaOSx.x is quite void of any specialised software in this area. Tried to get some coders interested in some of the opensource solutions etc, even tried to compile a few myself (something I will look at in the next year perhaps when I start seriously learning to code)

I quite often back up dvds but by a different technique, I have a DVD Recorder. I plug certain brand of DVD player into the back (one that doesn't support copy protection) and record it on the DVD Recorder, it records it in mpeg and mp3 audio. You then burn this to a DVDR or DVDRW.

I often considered then transferring this to my Amiga and then converting that but never really got around to doing that... I know that would work fine and we don't have to worry about ripping any commerical disks...

good luck, be watching this thread with interest

@Cool_amigaN

Can't help with the 1st problem but with the 2nd I too had this problem, try selecting normal not expert when you go into mediabox. Otherwise do what I did and run mediabox seperately from the cdrom based workbench.

Another thing, when I ejected the cdrom to boot off the newly completed harddrive it wouldn't do it. I ended up having to interrupt the booting sequence and using the relevant menus to select the harddrive as the primary booting device, in my case this needed to be entered in two different locations in the menus, try that if one option doesn't work.

Other than those few tweaks (which I am glad I already had A1 experience) everything runs fine as can be... also make sure your devices are running in UDMA mode and not PIO.

good luck

SAM is a great machine!

There's no doubt in my mind that it was perfectly normal reponses or intentions. I was just thinking out loud suggesting that at times (perhaps the maintainer has had a bad day or there are a string of events that converge etc etc) reading a band wagon type thread could prove uninspiring or negative

Since most if not all active people around here seem quite down to earth my concerns probably aren't necessary... just a little food for thought nothing more...
