@haslenuts
The HD drivers all announce themselves on startup. If you had a serial terminal, you could look for the "lsi53..." greeting message when the system boots (they're all very friendly). You would have to set the kernel command line to include the word "serial".
Also there is the documentation file "Documentation/lsi53c8xx_dev/lsi53c8xx_dev.doc" on the Install CD (in case you missed it).

@Valiant
I've run Shanghai under OS4, the only problem was the fact that it wanted a 640x480 screen so the display looked funny.
I think it was one of those games that wouldn't exit, either, you had to reboot.
The version I have came from a disk of free games provided with the A500 that I bought for the kids in about 1990.
[edit] Just tried it again, still works. It calls itself "China Challenge" and claims to have been written by a Dirk Hoffman in 1990. Is that the one you meant?
PS: it does exit cleanly. [/edit]

@BobW
An impertinent question I know, but did you boot the Install CD and perform the installation from the Install system, or did you load the CD and run the Installation script from your old system?

@Chris
If it says it is a 720 kB disk, then it could only read it at the data rate for a 720 kB disk, and it must be formatted that way.
I don't know what AROS does to squash more data onto a floppy. You can sometimes step the head past the 80-cylinder limit and squash more cylinders in that way, but that won't work on all drives and the VIA SB doesn't like it.
Alternatively, you could possibly increase the data rate slightly and/or reduce the sector spacing on each track, but the VIA SB won't allow that either.
Can't remember what happens with the DD/HD hole. IIRC there is no indication from the VIA SB whether the hole is open or covered. I'll have a look at the code again (it's a year since I've been in there).

@saimo
Thanks for those figures, they are what I was looking for.
It seems that you are operating right at the bounds of your monitor's capabilities, if reducing the refresh rate from 86 to 85 is enough to make a big difference.
I'll make up those modes myself and see if I can measure a difference between 85 and 86. Maybe there is an arithmetic problem in there somewhere.

I don't know about your banks in the States, but ours out here in Oz all say *over and over again* "We will never send you emails requesting you to enter your details on a website. Any such emails are undoubtedly fraud."
Sadly, many gullible people are fooled every day. Glad to see you "woke up" in time!

@saimo:
If you have a monitor mode that does not produce a usable output from a Radeon or Voodoo, then we would like to know about it in case it is a bug that needs to be fixed.
Please let me have full details of: 1) your monitor type (TFT/CRT/model, etc); 2) the mode(s) that do(es) not work properly; 3) the P96 settings for that scan rate that *DOES* work properly; 4) the model of video card.
I need to be able to enter your numbers and see what scan rates etc are produced, before I can be sure it's a bug.
You can PM me if you like, to avoid cluttering the thread.

@SpotUp
Quite a few of the complaints here are not OS4 problems at all. Betatesters can "filter" the complaints (and test for reproducability) before submitting them to the system.

@orgin
You should not use the old Picasso96Settings file any more. It is obsolete and omitted from OS4 Final. In later issues it might not even be supported.
Use the MODE tooltypes in the driver icon. The reason you only got a few basic modes is because when you were asked what your monitor could do, you said something simple like "800x600". If you had selected a higher resolution, you would have been given more choice.

Hi 'nuts,
I take it this is on the A1?
You don't need any "xxx.device", what you need is a supported SCSI card (one with the lsi53c8xx chipset).
Then you need the device driver "lsi53c8xx.device.kmod" in Kickstart and in the kicklayout file. Nothing more.
It should just appear when you boot the machine. If not, try "info devices" and see what it says.
You might like to make sure that the partitions on the SCSI drive don't have the same names as any of your IDE drives.

Thanks, I can compile it with those defines. The result is far too big (140kB instead of 30 kB) and doesn't run, but we're getting closer

Sorry, it's me again . . .
Trying to compile the Toasters module but I don't have the "cybergraphics.h" header. Where can I find it? It's not on Aminet or OS4Depot. Do I need it?
Where are the DMPS_xxx macros defined? Is there a set of lower level blanker sources that I should have? Or are they defined in the "cybergraphics" header?

Yes, I can see the occasional Toaster appear with smoke issuing from its slots, only to stop flapping its wings and go into a spiral dive . . .
Lots of great ideas, wish I could draw . . .

@Rene: I was going to send you a PM but I may as well ask here so others can get the reply and get ideas. I want to modify the Flying Toasters so that other "objects" (ahem) appear from time to time. What is the format of the array[1024] in the Toasters code? Please don't tell me that you don't know because it's old code reused from somewhere

Do you know if it works under Loonix? Perhaps you don't have a Linux installation you can boot.
If you set the driver to "Auto check", does it click? Does the LED flash (need a dark room to see it) once every five seconds?
In any case, I would look for another floppy drive or another cable. It seems the "drive status" signal is not getting through to the controller. Although the software can see that there is a drive there, the hardware tells it that there is no disk in the drive.

Some personal experiences with apps mentioned here:
@lazi:
I have no problem with YAM 2.4. I simply copied in the three classes from an old installation and it worked.
The three classes (six files) you must install are:
TextEditor.mcc/mcp Vers 15.19 [OS4/PPC] (12/11/2006) BetterString.mcc/mcp Vers 11.7 [OS4/PPC] ( 9/07/2005) ToolBar.mcc/mcp Vers 15.12 [OS4/PPC] ( 1/08/2005)
All six files have to go into Sys:MUI/Libs/mui/ (NOT into Sys:Libs/MUI/)
@Paul:
I think you'll find no problems with lpr.device and network printing (in fact, I have only installed it for the first time over the last week and now have Amiga access to all the printers in the house).
MakeCD works OK here, too. I used it to burn my Install CDs.
@syrtran:
No personal experience, but the failure of Final Writer has been discussed amongst other beta testers and the consensus is that there is no workaround that the OS can make to support FW's bugs.
OTOH, Digita's Wordworth7 runs a treat, I use it frequently and it is good to see the speed boost it now enjoys.
@Ricossa: Only one problem here with PicShow: sometimes when halfway through a drawer of pictures it will give an error message "Can't load xxx". It can't load the next one either and I have to exit and try again. However, no crashes, recovery is complete and it works next time.
@jape: The NUMCLICKS tooltype in ClickToFront only accepts values of 1 or 2.
