Re: X5000 No Boot with particular RX550 Card
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

Okay, actually there is ironic good news: the card does not work. It is good news because it now makes sense why I am not getting a display at all when pressing the power button.

I pulled out my windows machine, swapped the video card in there with the RX550 and no display. To be double sure, I then inserted the R7 250A (Oland) into the windows machine, and I got a display. In anycase, the VGA LED on the motherboard (my X86 windows motherboard) is continuously RED when the RX550 is inserted. I do repairs on things sometimes, but I am not expert. I looked for obvious shorts and inspected the circuit board and there are just no visable signs of damage, nor any capacitors (including SMD) that have been knocked off. Either it was somehow damaged in transit, even though it was very well packaged and does not look damaged at all, or the seller is not telling the truth about it working in the first place. I have no reason not to believe and no animosity towards the seller at all! I was going to buy a new X5000 motherboard anyway, and for the same price I got a full X5000 machine that clearly works. All good.

I guess it means that I shall either try and repair the card which is unlikely, or I shall buy a new RX card; suggestions please?

Lastly, since I was trying to get this to work I guessed that I needed to go into the KICKLAYOUT file and comment out the RadeonHD module! Silly, I know. It now means that even with my R7 250A (Oland) I can get the initial splash screen, but workbench will not load up; just a white screen.

Is there anyway to amend the kicklayout file? I am not sure if the SSD is using the NG filesystem, so I am not even sure that I could put that into my X1000 and fix it from there.

In summary:
- Suggestions for a new RX card
- How to amend a kicklayout file when I cannot get into Workbench

Thanks all.

X5000 No Boot with particular RX550 Card (SOLVED)
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

Hello all. I received an hardly-ever used Amiga X5000 recently.

At first, I checked all connections and then though it safe to power on. Just before powering it on, I connected my DVI connector to the RX550. I turned it on. No display at all.

I then swapped out the RX550 for a R7 250A (Oland). Again, a DVI connection. This time, the system runs fine.

Then, just to see if it made a difference, I tried the HDMI connector. It worked with the R7 250A again.

Now, I put back the RX550 and use the HDMI connection - but again, no output.

I have no idea what the seller has done in terms of setting up the hard drive. I have no reason to doubt what he said and it is clear that the machine works. So, I believe that this is a hardly-used X5000. Amiga OS 4 Update 2. Enhancer 2.1 with RadeonHD.chip: 3.7 and RadeonRX.chip 2.8.

Initially, the kicklayout contained all the usual stuff with the HD driver being loaded before the RX driver. None of those are commented out.

The seller also said that he was getting output with HDMI using the RX550.

When it comes to this RX550 I am stuck, and I am not sure how to get it working.

I am posting this thread to seek some help.

Just to add an update to this ongoing thread.

I have not been able to reproduce this issue since I swapped out my mechanical SATA drive in place of an SSD Drive.

Ever since I started using the SSD Drive with a fresh installation of the OS I simply never get any hanging.

For now the case is closed and the solution was to install a fresh OS on an SSD drive.

I will re-open this thread only if I can reproduce the issue.

Re: Are AmigaKit still selling X5000 machines?

On a brighter note. I no longer need AmigaKit to sell me an X5000 since I bought have just received one today.

The booting time is seriously quick. I love it so far, but I also completely love my X1000: it is quite a solid machine with no issues.

I got this X5000 as a back up. The only issue is that I really like the Fractal Design R4 white case I have on my X1000. I might get another one for this X5000. The real reason I wanted another X machine was for a backup! Though, it may be strange to have an X5 as a backup for an X1.

In anycase, having both is so great.

I was obsessed with my classic machine for many years and I have quite a lot of expensive classic gear and a number of classic machine converted into towers. But, since I got the X1000 I just fell in love the NG machines.

With all the fighting that goes on (in fairness, there is not THAT much), I feel lucky that I have not been through the turmoil of AmigaOS4 etc in the past decade(s). To me, the OS 4 and NG machines is all new. I guess some people would be envious of my niave position.

In anycase, I am loving it. My opinion so far is that: if I was not a developer in nature, I probably would not find a great deal of use for these machine. I would class them as developer machines, but I know that this is not the case for everyone. There are no doubt many users who love NG and are not interested in development. That is just a personal opinion.

All I can say is: I am loving it.

Okay. Believe it or not, I just received an Amiga X5000. I am playing around with it!

I downloaded the LHA file from OS4Depot and I also saw that it was slow. What I needed to do was:

Options>Graphics>Set Default UPS and set that to 60.

It no longer runs slow. I will have to get the X1000 set up again to figure out why I have never needed to do that on that machine.

So far, after just installing an RTL8369 card, I cannot reproduce this issue.

I will report back if I can reproduce it. For now, case solved: upgrading to an RTL8369 seems to have done the job.

Re: Porting Space Cadet?

I just uploaded a new version in the queue on OS4Depot. The only thing is that I have suppressed the SDL error output (since users don't want to see that), devs may want to - I actually had this option in the first version but took it out before.

This time I compile with DNDEBUG if it makes a difference and was already using -O3.

From my end, I am getting lots of CPU usage, but no more than the first version and smoothing plays quite quickly.

This time there is no forced software rendering. When I updated to the latest core code and compiled with only endian changes applied, the game just worked. using "compositing" and was faster than before.

@kas1e

That's really strange. For me it is the opposite. Linear filtering works fine and it is a lot faster. Optimizations are enabled and the output error messages were in the previous version also, I just did not put in the printerr option this time which suppresses them.

A new version will appear soon on the depot, but it is in the queue right now:

http://os4depot.net/download.php?file=queue/spacecadetpinball.lha

This one is updated to the latest core code from the original repository, smoother graphics, an icon, and this time should not crash when there is no required DAT file.

@cygnusEd

Thank you for the mail. Using the SDK Lite + the thing you provided has enabled me to recompile, relink and now the binary works even after SSHTerm was invoked.

FYI, I was somehow blind before. I did not know there was an SDK, despite it being infront of me, so - before - I downloaded all the sources and essentially compiled all the SDK and newlib libraries. Now I am using the SDK lite + your email attachment.

I will now create a proper installer and update the OS4Depot package in time.

Re: Finally some version of (M)Emacs for the Amiga

Interesting, I can already reproduce this issue.

- Power on the X1000 (either from cold, or perform a full reboot of the system)
- Double click on one of the icons I have on my desktop that opens up an SSHTerm to a server on my local network. This is an INFO file (marked as "LEAVE OUT" on the Desktop to a SCRIPT file located in the same directory as SSHTerm whose contents is:
run >NILprograms:sshterm/sshterm 4.4.4.4 theUserName

- Try to invoke the JASSPA Emacs bat file on my AmiDock, OR, even open up AmiCyngix in full, navigate directly to the "mew" binary and the same thing happens: a DSI error.

I can try other AmiCygnix programs, such as Leafpad and there is no problem.

Conclusion:
For whatever reason, an invocation of SSHTerm and then trying to open JASSPA causes this DSI error and I need a FULL system reboot.

@cygnusEd

thanks for the tips. I will work on that. Funny though, sometimes when I am doing other things on the machine here (X1000) and I try to invoke run it from the AmiDock (I copied the BAT file to the AmiDock), I do get DSI errors. Even restarting the AmigaOS is not enough - that continues to show the same issue. I have to restart the computer in full as if the memory needs to be flushed.

I am not sure if anyone will really use this package in anger, since I am not sure who prefers to use emacs. But, if anyone else can reproduce it then let me know. I noticed this a few days ago too, and it was not like I had previously opened it successfully in the few hours session I was working. It was a brand new invocation for the session.

Something I can look into I guess, but without a debugger it is still very difficult.

For anyone who actually likes emacs. Let me know if doesn't work.

It is not the cleanest amicygnix package and I will work on a proper installer.

Okay, this first version is at:

http://os4depot.net/?function=showfil ... ion/spacecadetpinball.lha

See the TODOS and offer porting feedback since I am new to it. Sorry, but there is no decent icon, just a default info file.

....

Only before I uploaded to the depot/aminet did I use the latest SDL. I noticed a much smaller binary, and it defaulted to linear filtering which made it slow. I added the information to the IMPORTANT section, saying you can turn off that smoothing. It still crashed with accelerated. I can try the suggestions @capehill mentioned later.

....

Maybe I should set up a github for this code so you guys can suggest improvements and, in any case, I want to update the core code to the latest released version of spacecadetpinball anyway. This one is a few months old.

Re: Porting Space Cadet?

I just did this port. During it I realised that there was quit a lot of endian byte swapping needed since object code in byte arrays was dumped from a little-endian machine (probably x86 of course). Then, I saw the good work of: https://forum.hyperion-entertainment.com/viewtopic.php?p=54334, which, in turn, came from the Wii port since that machine is also apparently big-endian.

All in all, I took the link in that forum thread and made a few tweaks.

- IMPORTANT: Drop this binary into the location where all the DAT files are located, otherwise your computer will crash (at least, mine does). This is because of hard "return 1" being used instead of freeing up resources first. I don't have plans to fix this, but could do in the future.
- For this version, you can supply an option "-accelerated" from invocation from the shell to ask it to try to invoke the SDL Renderer using accelerated renderer. For me, this just freezes my machine. SOFTWARE renderer works and that is the default
- Also, you can provide an option "-printerr" which will force the output of SDL error messages to be printed to stdout. By default I turned this off.

This is my dropbox link. I don't know how these new dropbox things work, so let me know if the link does not work:

https://www.dropbox.com/s/6dw181f7fwv0 ... paceCadetPinball.lha?dl=0

And, let me know if it doesn't work at all. I would ensure you have not got any important tasks running when you first try and invoke this.

Thanks.

Is there a tool to automatically create an Installer script? I have never created such a thing.

If not, I can just have a look at another Amicygnix program and modify it.

I have ironed out the remaining issues and now this is usable. I could upload this in my own way, but it would not follow the standard Amicygnix software packages on OS4Depot. What I mean by that is, they all have a proper installer etc.

Is there anything stopping me uploading this in my own way, or would you strongly suggest it being like all the other Amicygnix packages?
