@Mark

From Wikipedia: (full item here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gutenprint)
Gutenprint (formerly Gimp-Print) is a collection of free software printer drivers for use with UNIX spooling systems, such as CUPS, lrp and LPRng. These drivers provide printing services for UNIX systems (including Linux), Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

Yes, it's a shame AmigaOS isn't included here, but wasn't there some talk about porting CUPS? If so, Gutenprint wouldn't half be useful.

@angelheart

Don't get downhearted, at the end of the day, AmigaOS is certainly about being customizable if nothing else.
If you can come up with a UI. library that can allow a users experience to work as you've said as another Preference file or however you envision it, good on you.
It's another Theme really.

I must admit, using Firefox as an example, it's nice to have it look familiar in Windows, Mac OS X and Linux and the basic skin and the relevant gadgets are as the relevant OS decides but the menus etc, are always (I think) the same. Is this what you mean?

Hiya,
I like your thinking, however, wouldn't we then be losing what makes Amiga OS what it is?
If apps can be brought over to AOS, shouldn't they conform to Amiga GUI rules? I understand what you are saying, but we'd just look like any other OS. Plus, what happens if you open up one app from, say, the Windows world and another from Mac OS X? Does the whole GUI then alter each time you switch between them? I reckon that could work out to be even more confusing.

Given the latest posts here and on AW.net about Gnash, does this mean that we can call a gnash function in this way, or is it just by tooltype?

@tommo1975

Hi Tommo

I've got one of those IDE interfaces and it fits fine in an A1200 case.

Why not go a little further upmarket and get AOS3.5 or (preferably) 3.9?
Those OS's include 3.1 anyway and I don't think they are any more expensive than Amiga Forever, either.

I would imagine it wouldn't be exactly kosher to rip the 3.1 files from AF either! But there is a facility included on AF to write ADF's to a disk. Mind you, if Cloanto have paid a license fee to A Inc and you've paid Cloanto, then perhaps it is totally legal.

Anyway, best of luck with the "old lady". Don't forget to let us all know how you've got on.

@Cool_amigaN

Dunno about on SAM. I ordered Nightlong from Forematt, got it today and tried it on my A1 with OS 4.1 - DSI straight away, won't allow me to ignore it.
I'll let you know if I can get it to work. The Readme recommends an 060 or PPC, but I think it uses CyberGraphics. Maybe that's the problem

@emeck

Yeah, I listen to BBC radio. It now uses BBC iPlayer, but I think it still gives the option to listen using a stand-alone version of Real Player.
I thought Helix Player was a Linux version of that (which, of course, will mean it will have restrictions)

Edit: Just looked at the Wikipedia on Helix, it appears to be part open source and part restricted source

(The code is released in binary and source code form under various licenses, notably the proprietary RealNetworks Community Source License and the free and open source software RealNetworks Public Source License. Additionally, the Helix DNA Client and the Helix Player are licensed under the popular GNU General Public License (GPL) free and open source license.

Use of the RDT, the default proprietary Real data transport, and of the RealVideo and RealAudio codecs requires binary components distributed under the Helix DNA Technology Binary Research Use License.)

Any prog that can play Real Audio streamed files would be a real blessing.

@Atheist

Dunno really but from the installation instructions this is a requirement :

The PCI Slot must be Bus Mastering Capable

The install Guide doesn't suggest it's designed only for Windows

Have you tried the physical connection?
Try swapping the cable over from your linux box to your SAM and vice versa

@RacerX

Originally I over-wrote an OS 4.0final partition which was FFS and set bootable. The problem wasn't the OS or partitioning, because I could start up from the CD and then use OS4.1.

It was when I rebooted, the A1 didn't recognise the drive as valid because it was missing the Drive Init file, even though the SLB was there and all the partitions were valid.

Help, please!

Hi all, Happy New Year

I'm posting to ask for a bit of help, here.

I'd been having a bit of trouble with my A1 since before I installed OS4.1, so I backed everything up, wiped my HD and attempted to start afresh.

Partitioned the HD in media Toolbox as part of the installation, carried on through, ok and tried to restart my A1

No joy!

Tried again, oppened up Media Toolbox again to check that everything was as I'd set it up, but this time, for whatever reason, I opened it up in Expert mode. I noticed that there is no Disk Init installed. Asked it to install, it asks me where the file is.

I haven't a clue from here on, so I removed the HD and put it in a PC and installed Linux onto it. I've then put it back into my A1 and tried again. Still no Disk Init.

I'm now stuck.

Any one any ideas?

Hi Mikey,
Well done for your rescue effort, it's a really
good guide.
I might just have a copy of it on a CD. If so, I'll
upload it to you for the missing files.

I'm absolutely NOT decrying your efforts for a bit of support for Ken Lester - he does a great job, but why then no equivalent Donate button for Mason?
