Re: Image FX4.5

@All

Guys, thanks for the advice, I'll try Elwood's script first.

@Bill: There are several binaries on the CD, but no OS4 native version. Fortunately the 68K version works fine on OS4 (so I'm told).

Image FX4.5
Quite a regular
Quite a regular

I bought the CD some months ago when Nova Design had their "special" on, but I have been unable to install it on an OS4 system.

The old Installer won't run under OS4, so I first had to copy the CD onto a clean partition and call it by the name of the CD ("IFXInstall"). Then I could change the default tool of the script to "Installer" and get the script to run.
Next problem is that the script looks for "=RAM:" and "=Progs:" (my destination volume), so I tried assigning those names to the proper places. That got a bit further, then I ran into the problem that "it can't find the file 'RAM:xxx.info'". Small wonder, it isn't in RAM: where it should be. They are using something called "lhex" to unpack their .lha archives and it seems to be the next utility that has passed its use-by date. I can edit every line containing "lhex" to use "lha" (changing the options and their order on the command line as well), but that will take years.

Has anyone managed to install this thing under OS4? How? Has anyone a working script that I can use?

I wonder what sort of paint they use for the white line in the middle - I'd earnestly suggest they try a new brand.

@AmiGame

The mode "1280x1024x75" can't be done with an HSYNCMAX of only 48 kHz. You'll need at the very least 1024x75=76800 Hz, which is way over the 48000 limit you have set in the HSYNCMAX value.

As AmiKit said, change those values to agree with your monitor specs and it should work.

Re: Guru vs. Grim Reaper

@lazi

The GR is just a program that the OS runs when a task crashes, so it ought to be able to do anything else, like reboot the system instead.

It sounds like a good idea for applications that must keep running.

[edit] Now that I think more about it, you could copy the Reboot command from C: into System/ and call it GrimReaper, then the reboot would happen automatically.

So tell us about the repair/upgrade. How much, how long did it take, etc?

Re: OS4 License Agreement Terminated 20-December-06

@Billsey

It's all posturing. The following comments are based on my reading between the lines of "official" statements and may be completely wrong, but this scenario seems plausible:

Some years ago (early in the OS4 development project), Hyperion was looking at a huge investment to complete OS4 and "asked" Amiga for some funds towards it. Amiga Inc gave them some funds but probably consider those funds to be the "buyback" that was described in their contract.

Hyperion and their developers put a lot of time, energy and money into the subsequent development of OS4. Hyperion probably considers that it wasn't a "buyback" because the work wasn't finished, and anyway, any "buyback" in 2003 (?) only bought the work that had been done until then. Amiga Inc, of course, considers that the "buyback" also paid for all future work.

The filing of a lawsuit means that the "discussions between lawyers" failed to resolve the issue and they are now going to court.

******************

Leaving aside the legal aspects of the case, one must ask: "What is at stake?". It would seem that the only things of value are the OS4 source code and any associated licence fees. It seems reasonable, then, to assume that Amiga Inc, despite their claims that OS5 is being worked on, need the OS4 source code in order to build the new OS5.

Remember that Haage and Partner refused to hand over the source code to OS3.9 after their contract to produce OS4 was terminated. That refusal stands, but they have been unable to do anything with the source code since.

I hope that the situation is not repeated (not least because I have some of my own work invested in the OS4 project).

@ChrisY

You forgot to ask what sort of machine people have - eg I have an XE 7455 with a Radeon 9250 card + 512 MB.

Details:

(14) 0x1002 0x5960 ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO]
(15) 0x1002 0x5940 ATI Technologies Inc RV280 [Radeon 9200 PRO] (Secondary)

BOARDTYPE=Radeon
CMPLENGTH=6
(BORDERBLANK=Yes)
(BIGSPRITE=Yes)
(SOFTSPRITE=Yes)
IGNOREMASK=Yes
(DISPLAYCHAIN=Yes)
[...]
INTERRUPT=Yes

PS: I also have a Radeon 7000 (not currently installed) and I always used that with interrupts enabled also.

Re: Crashes with OS4 Final

@Futaura

I noticed that my crashes were always on startup - the screen was opened, the GUI drawn fully and the DSI happens when my Home Page is being fetched.

I've checked with Petunia disabled and I've had crashes just the same, so I don't think it's a Petunia problem. I've given the CPU a dust and a bit of TLC (core voltage re-adjusted). It's also gone from a single 256 MB DIMM to a single 512 MB DIMM.

I continued to get the exact same DSIs, so I think I have ruled out Petunia, CPU and memory problems.

For the last week I've had the Home Page nulled to Blank: and no crashes. I've been waiting until everything is loaded and ready, then fetching the Home Page manually (by clicking on the Home icon). No crashes for a week.

However, I've just had another crash (DAR = 0x4E8 as usual), this time when fetching the Home Page. Could Someone Who Knows These Things have a look at the HTML code and tell me if there is any Javascript in it or linked to? Frankly, I wouldn't recognise Javascript if it popped up in my porridge.

The URL is http://mirror.bom.gov.au/products/IDR033.shtml

As to going back to "defaults" - I haven't tried it yet because the system will be unusable in its default condition. I might make up a new OS4 Final build that is as "default" as it can be and still access the network, etc.

Re: RAD: on AOS4.0

@Atheist

"Format"is only for floppies. You don't have to format a RAD Disk or a RAM Disk, there are no tracks or sectors to format.

Quote:

I did that, then I changed the high cylinder value to what I wanted.

Changed what? The value in the text file "RAD" or the tooltype in "RAD.info"?

Quote:

Then I did
mount devs/dosdrivers/rad
and it said "MOUNT: Device "rad:" is already mounted"

Did you reboot after changing the HiCyl value? Because if not, it was already "mounted" with the old values and you can't "unmount" it.
