Re: AAMP (as in Apache) under Update 5

Oh!
An updated AmiCygnix is surely badly needed too!!

Go on then, and I will save a bit for donating something to such AmiCygnix update when it will be ready!

Any chance to see some 2D hardware acceleration based on the new AmigaOS4 compositing functions?

p.s. I too would love Gimp 2.8 because of its ability to work in a single window mode. Sadly it relies on GTK 2.6 and I believe Edgar is going to release (from the AmiCygnix readme) "Support of programs compiled for GTK+ 2.24 and GTK+ 3.x".

Thanks a lor Edgar!!

It now works like a charm!

P.S.
A year and a half has passed since your release of AAMP native for OS4.
Are you ready for a package update, maybe with another bounty?
The AAMP package has MySQL release 5.1.35 and PHP 5.2.10.
MySQL is today at release 5.5.28 and PHP at 5.4.8.

Well, at list I would add support for plain images, which could be simply translated into IFF.

@alfkil
I do not want to discourage you, but from what I read QT 5 will be initially released next June and on its homepage they say

"...Qt 5.0 is a feature-driven release with time-to-market requirements especially for embedded environments. This implies that we should keep the scope of Qt 5.0 limited to the essential, and add more features and add-on modules in the upcoming minor releases..."

In my understanding this means that a feature rich version QT 5 will come not before a year or so.

QT 4.8 was released last December, so I think it is going to be mature enough as a source base for you, and your work will be of use for at least 2 (or maybe 3) years from now, and softwares such as Calligra will work happily on it.

As you are quite into QT now (well, judging from the quality of your releases which simply works) it could be time to start on 4.8 using your 4.7 knowledge.

Of course, as you said, if you meet strong dependancies from OpenGL, you can simply drop 4.8 and continue on QT 4.7.
Just I'm asking you to have a look at it, before (maybe) wasting too much of your spare time.

@alfkil
I'm in love with Calligra and its underlying concepts!
I would be more than happy if such an office suite will be available on OS4!!

I might sound a little bit boring to you, but when I mentioned the QT 4.8 platform abstraction layer, I did not only tried alerting you that using such a solution it might end up helping you while developing the native amiga rendering system.

I was also thinking about Calligra as it has a serious font rendering problem under QT4.7.
I followed and used Calligra (thanks to the project neon on Ubuntu) since the koffice time and the switch to QT 4.8 gave to the overall text quality a massive bump.

To me it looks dangerous and a potential waste of time if you end up with a perfectly working QT 4.7 port but then you have to start from scratch for QT 4.8. I think we are all well aware of the time and effort you are putting into this port!

Have a look at these links:
- Is it me or is KWord's font rendering really awful?
- Font rendering in Calligra Words
- In Calligra words text gets clipped at top and bottom

@alkfil

Out of curiosity do you ever looked at the new QT 4.8 platform abstraction layer?

I'm not really a programmer but from I could read, this should be some sort of way to overcome differences on how the host operating system renders QT apps.

...it allows porting Qt to different windowing systems and devices easier. It provides a clean abstraction layer for porting QtGui to new window systems....

Well, I must admit that for me filer is the most commonly used tool, I feel the workbench way of browsing folder frustrating, slow and cahotic.

Obviously, I would appreciated that filer could be able to interact directly with my brain and change its layout and its behaviour on the fly depending on what I'm doing at a specific moment.

At the moment the current version just works, which is simply great.

I would like to congratulate with the team who produced this really useful software.
Better rendering speed, better font rendering quality and a complete user interface than any other amiga web browser.
What else do we need from a browser?
Well... more rendering speed could be nice, but I seriously doubt that the AMCC 460ex can be squeezed more than this...

Thank you all guys!
I'm finally using my Sam460!!!

@ChrisH

Yes, you're right. "Solved" it's a big word, but at least I can use a Radeon PCI 9250 because of it's Warp3D compatibility.

I also should mention that with this solution, at least with the Jmicron JM20329 chip version that I bought, uboot kind of recognize the dvd player, but it is unable to boot from it.
The only working solution USB based are external dvd with USB, which clearly use a chip more compatible with uboot.

This solution is however 100% compatible with OS4 (it recognize it after the kickstart has been loaded), which should be already installed on the HD.

I solved the lack of an additional SATA port using this USB to SATA adaptor

Resized Image

I leave it internally, attached to one of the USB plug on the motherboard.

You can find these adapters here or here.

Tried too with Wazp3D on a Sam460ex with a RadeonHD 4550 and yes, it works, that's by itself simply great!

Graphic is a complete garbage, completely unreadable, tomorrow I'll upload some screenshot.

Speedwise it is slow, I think just a little bit slower than AmiCygnix softwares.

Stability is seriously an issue and the log by grimreaper tell me that many times is the Warp3d (Wazp3D renamed library) that crashed.

Re: HTML datatype: possible simpleHTML update with CSS?

Some usage esample:
- reading manuals not in AmigaGuide format;
- reading emails, witch commonly contains CSS elements;
- quickly opening of html files I'm working on or I've downloaded;
- embedding of html elements in software guis for e.g. explanations or better looking solutions;

As of new software:
- HTML editors;
- basic word processors a la AmigaWriter;
- ...

Absolutely an HTML datatype should remain extremely lightweight, that's a must.
No, personally I don't think such datatype will grow that much from the usage point-of-view adding a CSS interpreter as both the Javascript interpreter and the browser user interface wouldn't be there.
I would be happy also with a subset of the CSS implementation, for example having a full revision 1 and some tags of revision 2 of such standard would fine to me.

HTML datatype: possible simpleHTML update with CSS?
Just popping in
Just popping in

As nowadays in amigaland we've got various browsers that support CSS html coding and few useful parsing libraries are available, would it be feasible to do a refreshed html datatype supporting some more tags?

I've always used the good simpleHTML by Sebastian Bauer, but it was last updated in 2005 and doesn't support CSS at all.
Anyone knows if Sebastian still around? Anyone has got its sources?

I know html and css are both a beast and combined are a huge task for a single developer, but I would appreaciate only some very basic engine update. It would lead to many possibilities, such more pleasant manuals than those amigaguide 80's stuff. And more than other it would be possibile to open html files without the need to open CPU and RAM hungry browsers.

What do you think?

Great!
Amigans is back!!!
Thanks a lot guys, as an OS4.1 user I feel again at home.

@BillE
As a web developer I personally do not agree on avoiding javascript or css.
Come on, they were introduced in mid-nineties!
I do not want my Amiga to be stuck in the past, I've choosed to use a Sam460, not an Amiga 1200...

Please, please, do some usability tests on Amicygnix.
I really need both abiword and gnumeric and, if they works at reasonable speed, I can buy the 460 without worries!
