Re: OWB 3.11

@orgin

Using OWB 3.11 right now. Seems much faster for typing a post than OWB 3.10. Will comment again later after I've driven it around the net abit.

Well .... that was fun.

I was typing a post over here with OWB 3.10 and my machine froze up solid.

Typing was very slow, same as on amigaworld. Either OWB 3.10 is using way more memory as soon as it loads or it is eating up memory as I type or move around from web page to web page.

I have a MicroA1 with IBM PPC 750 GX cpu and standard 256MB RAM.

Typing this post with OWB 3.7 .....

Re: OWB 3.9

This will be my last comment regarding OWB 3.9. In general, I found this version to be very nice. Download feature was very useful and convenient. For general web browsing, I have not encountered any problems on any web sites except AmigaWorld. However, on AmigaWorld, my system would eat up memory like crazy and eventually freeze up solid if I left it too long. If I quit OWB before it froze and returned to Workbench, the memory would be released. It turns out that this condition only occured (or maybe was triggered) when certain animated gifs appeared in the OWB window. The little yellow guy who yells "GAAH" and wegster's avatar (the man at the desk typing wildly at his computer and tapping his foot) are two gifs that always caused problems for me. There may be others, but I have not isolated any others yet.

The only forum sites I routinely visit are amiga.org, AmigaWorld and amigans.net. So far, I have only encountered this problem on AmigaWorld.

At one point, I was going to use IBrowse for AmigaWorld and use OWB 3.9 for everything else.
I found it was simply easier to drop back to OWB 3.7 and call it a day.

For more information about the gif problem, see this thread in AmigaWorld.

Well that was fun. Now my system freezes up solid when using OWB 3.8. Unfortunately, I was typing a post at amigaworld everytime it happened, so I don't know if it happens anywhere else.

You may have something here. I was only using the expat.library. I'll see if it makes any difference if I have the libexpat.so file as well.

PS ...
I guess it is important to replace the old libexpat.so file that is already in my SObjs directory.

Re: OWB 3.8

I have also returned to OWB 3.7.

There were many features I liked about OWB 3.8, such as the popdown url thingy and download function, but I just got fed up with it crashing on amigaworld. So far I have not encountered any problems anywhere else.

Crashes on amigaworld ...

Yesterday, it crashed while I was composing a post when I tried to bring up the smilie page. After a reset, I surfed the net for over an hour at various web sites, including amigaworld, with no issues at all.

Last night, it crashed when I clicked on something in the upper left part of the screen. Can't remember if it was the back arrow or the AW boing ball. After a reset, no further problems.

This morning, it crashed when I clicked on "next page" on a thread I was reading on amigaworld.

That was enough for me.

Yes, I found OWB 3.8 won't launch without it.

Only one GR so far. It was on amigaworld of all places while I was writing a post. Croaked while opening the smilie page.

Downloaded an mp3 file just fine. Cool.

@joerg

Just wanted to let you know that OWB has become my main webrowser. I still use Aweb or IBrowse for downloading files, and I have no problem with this. Now that I know about ktadd's ClipDown program, I will give it a try as well.

BTW thanks for all your work on OWB for OS4. It's a great program and I appreciate that it takes alot of time and effort.

I like the startpage.

Still checking out the other features.

I have been using OWB 3.6 for about 5 days. Very nice.

This sounds similar to what spotUP and gurus2000 encountered ...
Sometimes I see a strange thing when highlighting text for copy and paste. Sometimes it highlights a big block of text and I have to click somewhere else on the screen and try again to get the words or sentences I really want to copy.

Re: KCon: alternative for OS4.1?

@Slayer

I use KingCON update 1.7 (13.02.2004) with AmigaOS 4.1 on my MicroA1. In my case, I don't use it as a replacement for the normal AmigaShell program, although it seems to work quite well for that purpose. I use KingCON mainly to provide scrollable console windows for my ARexx programs.

Apparently KingCON update 1.8 is available from AmiKit. It can be downloaded from the download section. Not sure how much it costs.

KingCON update 1.7 (13.02.2004) was included on the AmigaOS 4.0 Developer Prerelease CD that came out for the MicroA1.

@Joerg

Thanks again for a great update.

Last night I thought I might be experiencing a low memory condition with my ?A1 when I had more than one tab showing in the OWB window. Seemed a bit slow over at amigaworld webpages at the same time.

Working fine so far today.

@CountRaven

Not sure about SAM440ep, because I don't have one.

However, I have been using AmigaAMP for several years on my MicroA1. Here is quick listing of what I use ...

AHI audio system is required.

AmigaAMP 2.18
AmigaAMP AmigaOS 4 decoding engine 2.19
asyncio.library
mpega.library
sndfile.library

The two AmigaAMP packages are available at the AmigaAMP homepage (in the download area):
Homepage: http://www.amigaamp.de/
AmigaAMP.lha
AmigaAMP-Decoder-OS4.lha

The AmigaOS 4 decoding engine is also available at OS4depot.

The other libraries are not part of the package and are available separately at OS4depot.

----------

Here are some notes from rom the AmigaAMP readme file ...

Requirements (not included in the AmigaAMP archives)
--------------------------------------------
asyncio.library
AHI audio system

For MP2/MP3 support (optional)
- mpega.library

For AIFF, WAV and 8SVX support (optional)
- sndfile.library v1

Re: OWB 3.4

@joerg

I have been using OWB for quite awhile now and I am very happy with the progress so far.

I was very surprised when suddenly, out of the blue, I started encountering crashes on the AmigaWorld webpage. I've finally captured a crashlog and submitted it. It only seems to happen when a particular ad appears in the Sponsored Ads area of the webpage. The ad has the words AVS Video. This ad was on the webpage for a few days around 2009/1/11 and my system crashed everytime the ad appeared. Then the ad disappeared again and other ads appeared instead. No crashes. Showed up again tonight and crashed my system.

As soon as I see the words AVS Video, OWB crashes with a GrimReaper 80000003 DSI type failure. So far, I have not seen the problem when any other ad is displayed.

http://crashlog.os4depot.net/cl115

The crash occurs on OWB 3.4, OWB 3.3, OWB 3.1 and OWB 2.20.

AWeb and IBrowse do not display the ads and do not crash.

Re: OS4.1, classic applications and games

@TheDaddy

I answered with a little more detail over on amigaworld.

Real3D and the demo version of Myst work fine with OS4.1 Don't know about the real commercial version of Myst, because I don't have it yet.

If you already have Real3D on CD, it may be just a matter of dragging the Real3D drawer over to your hard drive. I downloaded the ADF files from AmiKit back while I was still running AmigaOS 4.0 July 2007 Update. They required an older version of the Installer program and I had to use AmigaOS 3.1 to install the program on my hard drive. Luckily, I had the AmigaOS4PPC version of E-UAE installed and used it fire up my OS3.1 Workbench. Installed Real3D from the ADF files, then went back to OS4 and dragged the Real3D drawer out to where I could easily find it.

Of course, as usual, there is the obligatory assign to add to the user-startup file, for example:
assign R3D3: Sys:Real3D

Real3D launches just fine from OS4.1 I haven't used it much so I don't know if there are any pitfalls.
