@TheDaddy

there are several, the most popular seem to be flipclock and limpidclock, both available on os4depot. just search for 'clock' and you'll get 'em both.

@thread

thanks for everyone's assistance here. it's running well now, and wow, this is an awesome program. i'm going to keep playing to test stability and if no issues, will register.

it's amazing that these things not only still run programs this old, but that programs this old as are as good as they are.

Graphically what runs on OS4?

I am surprised that no-one mentioned TV Paint! Last year I even made any easy way to install it, since installation is tricky from the official DMS files:

good point. TVpaint flat flies on my SAM. just last night i was showing my daughter (six years-old) how to create bubble effects with it.

wish i had known about your installation archive, chris! it would have saved me some time getting everything installed properly the first time around. ;)

new soundfx installation on OS4.1u3

folks,

i'm having difficulty getting soundfx installed on my SAM. specifically i'm told that a 'string is too long' on line 32 of the installation script. apparently some included tool, gettag, returns a string which is too long? can't see to get around it.

has anyone here been able to install v4.3 onto their amiga NG systems successfully? any hints?

Forgot to ask...

Graphically what runs on OS4?

I remember using DPaint but my favourite was PPaint, ImageFX? Any new 2D/3D programs that run natively on OS4?

more than you might imagine. for example i have perfectpaint, personal paint, imagefx, photogenics, arteffect, fxpaint, grafx2, amifig, aladdin4D, and others running quite happily on my SAM.

check the 'images' section of this site. i just uploaded two screenshots of arteffect and fxpaint, actually. some are a bit tricky, though. for example, with ppaint, i've always had to force the screen resolution via the 'screens' prefs tool. with imagefx i had to use the third-party installer on os4depot, and arteffect has problems drawing part of its windows when compositing is on.

but with those little niggles out of the way, you'll find even on our lowly SAMs, these programs fly in comparison with classic kit. let me know if you're curious about anything in particular: i'll try and test it out on my end for you.

@Phantom

that's a shame. it looked like a nice office package, something we sorely need in the amiga NG landscape. apparently there was a version available for OS3.x, but i don't know if it ever shipped from distributors to customers or not.

@amigakit

didn't you guys distribute this at one point?

folks,

did anyone ever use titan's port of papyrus office on their amigas? i'm increasingly curious about this thing since i've heard it mentioned, seen screenshots (link), even was told amigakit was going to sell it at one point, but no one ever seems to confirm they ever actually owned a copy?

does anyone here use or know of anyone who uses papyrus office for amiga?

@TheDaddy

for quake2, you have two options. if you already have the game data, you can use capehill's port; alternatively you can purchase the full amiga version from hyperion at amigakit. peter gordon just recently updated the hyperion version, so it's worth a look. don't expect incredible performance, though. on my SAM i get around 21FPS with high quality settings.

for quake3 thomas frieden authored a port available at os4depot, which capehill based his port on as well. i haven't tried either version since i just have a SAM, so i imagine it wouldn't be terribly playable.

have fun!

i would also recommend this site for amiga manuals in PDF form. commodore-era manuals, application and game manuals, scanned books, all available.

there are amigaDOS manuals there -- old, but still useful. another source for the original, combined amigaDOS manual circa 1986 can be found here.

@alfkil

i'm also new to the shell in AmigaOS. for wildcards i use two options:

1. if i only want one and only one character wild, i use the '?' operator. for example:

System:> dir foo.?.txt

2. if i want any number of characters wild, akin to the '*' operator in the POSIX world, i use '#?' instead. for example:

System:> dir foo.#?

hope this helps.

I did some limited tests:

These only partially support my thinking that a 128MB PCI graphics card would improve performance of slow 3D games on the Sam440. More testing is needed!

those results make sense. thanks for the tests! the main benefit of using an external card would be the increased video memory, the lack of which on the SAM440EP can cause things to slow to a crawl when you run out just as on a microA1.

my earlier point was that, independent of video memory, the chipset on the 9250 is not especially more performant than the M9, and it has to go through a relatively slow PCI interface to boot. so if you weren't hitting up against the 64MB VRAM limitation, you would probably better off using on-board video. if you do hit against the VRAM limit, then you'd probably be interesting in at least trying a 9x00 card with more to see if it helps.

those cards are so inexpensive, it's worth the experiment.

@carvedeye

it should work, yes, but you'll need additional files from acube to use it. the original SAM boards weren't really designed to use an additional graphics card, but it is possible. download this archive before installation of a 9250.

however it won't be any more performant than the on-board radeon M9. on the contrary it will probably be slower, but not by much. if your main interest is increasing the amount of available video memory (against the built-in 64MB), it might make sense. but otherwise you'd probably be happier with your on-board video.

let us know what you decide and how it goes!

You will need a Prism2 PCI card. AmigaKit is the only place you are likely to find one for sale these days, they are rather old. The driver is on Aminet/OS4Depot, but if you want to use WPA you will need the registered version.

i've been very pleased with the netgear MA311 PCI card in my SAM for some time. they're actually much more numerous than you might imagine. ebay, for example, has several for sale. they work well with the prism2 driver on os4depot; i haven't tried neil's updated drivers, though. did he make any changes other than the authentication methods it supports?

Office suite would make upcoming netbook much more atractive for endduser from outside of amiga community.

OO woun't be ready for that, but maybe KOffice could?

it would be a huge coup. the ability to work with modern file formats and have a modern office suite -- even if only the word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation tools -- would be the biggest thing to happen to OS4 in a very long time. combined with timberwolf, the combination would enable people -- myself included -- to actually replace their PCs with amiga NG systems.

and if both had OS4 themes, so they looked and felt like native applications, so much the better. i'd happily contribute substantial funds to a bounty for the porting of calligra words, stage, and tables to our platform. who's with me here?

maybe a project of this magnitude could interest alfkil and kas1e, among others? come on, fellows, name your price: we'll raise the money!

not sure why this would be in the OS4 forum per se, but it might be of note to folks who are X1000 beta testers who are dual-booting debian.

i'd just like to be able to play this on my SAM. works beautifully on my solaris box.

can workbench remember the position of appicons?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

folks,

here's a bit of a newbie question, but it drives me bonkers: if i iconify an application, say playcdda or tunenet, i might move its icon somewhere on the workbench that seems more appealing to me.

but then if i double-click on the application and later re-iconfiy, the icon is back where it was. so whatever position the programmer seems to think best is always the location of the iconified app -- i have to move it every time i iconify.

isn't there some method to get workbench to 'remember' the position of the icon so that if i move it, re-open the application, and re-iconify, the icon returns to where i had placed it earlier? is there a commodity that can do this for me?

Anyone interested in trying out a little patch (not yet heavily tested!), which should give the same behaviour as the OS3-only TrueMultiAssign patch? I'm interested to see if it causes problems for any programs.

To my surprise, this feature was already built-in to OS4 years ago, but it is disabled by default. My program patches the DOS library, so it is always enabled.

absolutely. if you'd like, i'd be happy to test on my SAM for you.

Recommendations for KVM switches?

Not too shy to talk

folks,

i'd like to use my amiga (SAM440ep-flex) more often on a daily basis, switching between my work system and the SAM based on whatever i'm doing at the moment. so, are any of you using a KVM switch? and, more importantly, is your experience positive with respect to running OS4.1u3?

i'm looking for recommendations from folks using KVM switches in conjunction with their amiga NG systems and who feel confident recommending any. any takers?

Cheers,

i can confirm this behavior on my SAM with the latest beta of wookiechat and OS4.1u3. moving or resizing the main window results in a very visible (and strange) redraw of the window elements. this behavior, however, does not appear on the latest stable version. i have since moved to using amIRC until this issue can be resolved. you can always go back to the older, stable version if you'd prefer.
