@joerg Quote: I don't think a separate OWB editor for selecting the applications to use with specific file types I was thinking more like a open source contribute, .o and .h files you can link in to OWB. Quote: Since DefIcons doesn't use a mime type, which can be application/octet-stream for anything, nor makes a guess based on parts of the file name, but uses the contents of the files for checking the file type it's IMHO better. deficons is not covered in the SDK, and deficons.prefs contains a mix of binary and ascii text, whit out some information on how the file is created or an API to read and write deficons its going to be a hack to work whit it, reading the tooltypes from the icons is not a problem yes checking the content of a file is good idea, but does require the file to be first to be downloaded, not a good idea for a external viewers designed for streaming MP3's like AmigaAMP and TuneNet. and deficons does not handle command line arguments where well. arexx scripts and shell commands %u URL %f file %r file requester %d directory requester. and so on.

Hi joerg.
I was thinking maybe I should make a mime editor based on reaction GUI, so you can include it in your OWB.
I will only do it if you?re interested.

Welcome, nice to see old timers coming back.
I hope to see some cool software from you soon..
I think I have some of old Amiga magazines you wrote about in your introduction, I mostly read Amiga Format.

@AmiKit
I think you will like it, USB mass storage, works allot better whit AmigaOS4.1 then it did whit OS4.0, now my photo camera works.
the new transparency stuff eats alot of RAM, there are some benefits none blocking screens, its fater when there are only a few windows open, but if there are lots of graphics is can slow down, we need faster garaphic bus on Amiga compatible computers.
oh and I think MiniGL2.0 is faster and better as well.

@AmiKit
SFS is faster and has a hidden ?.Recycled? directory for deleted files, SFS tries to stay valid by keeping the old files until the new file is created, there for it does not get as easily invalid, but if does get invalid you are in big troubles recovering it.
SFS should be used on system partition, and your film partition, on your SDK partition because reading lots files on FFS partitions is too slow.
FFS should be used on partitions where you have personal or important files, because if some thing really goes wrong whit SFS there is no way to recover, but whit FFS you can even recover files from none working partitions.

@Swisso Quote: @Snuffy OS4.1 installation was not difficult. Re installing all my favourite programs and personal files was time consuming especially when I have to edit a lot of the icon tools as well to make it run how I want it to. Otherwise it was a breeze. I could have upgraded my OS 4 installation instead and not had to reconfigure everything, but the instruction manual advises against it. So don't be put off buying OS4.1, it works very well, and I`m sure I don't know enough about the inner workings to have saved myself a lot of time and effort.
Dividing up you hard drive in to partitions is always smart, programs on separate partition, most programs depends only on system libraries and fonts, so they will work whit out reinstalling the programs, some programs keeps there config files in program dir so they don?t get lost. I case you have programs that do not work; you should copy your old workbench partitions to backup directory on different partition. So all you need to do if a program does not wok, run snoopy, find the library, prefs, font or MUI class that can?t be found by the program, and copy the files over to your clean system partition. Copy over s:user-startup to your clean system partition. Copy over s:shell-startup to your clean system partition. Copy only over the missing backup:prefs/env-archive files over to envarc: If you have the time you make note about what is needed by etch program, then if have lots of time make install script that will copy the needed files over, next time you run in to this problem you double click a icon and its all done.

One problem is that EUAE is not that needed in the first place for programs.
I think if get bounty that so large that one developers of existing JIT PowerPC emulators (Trance, Petunia) get tempted.

what your suggesting does not work, any way do I need to remove the env-handler?
can't even boot whit out startup-sequence when env-hander is removed form kicklayout, env-hander is required in AmigaOS4.1

@tonyw
I gain personal settings for individual users, for thiis its better if "Iprefs" only copied files when loadwb needed the files, thats after user is selected.
but because Iprefs copies the files over at once, I most reload prefs, my multi profile system, needs to reroute envarc: to user profile directory, I was planing more integration whit AmigaOS, to see what was possible to do, user profiles and security options.

@tonyw Did you even read the crash long in comment 57? http://crashlog.os4depot.net/index.php?function=view&crashlogid=98No copy command only triggers the DSI error, it did not crash, and YES i can ignore the DSI error and system will boot... try puting a copy command in startup-sequence and see what I'm saying, no need argue about details.

No what Chris is trying to write is something that translate fro mthe english : any number of occurence of either AB either BA. This should match AB, BA, ABAB, BABA, ABBA, BAAB, etc. If you prefer a way to represent this regex (if you understand them) : (AB|BA)*
What you are asking with #?(AB|BA) is to match everything ending with either AB, either BA.
so Chris is tring to do: dir #?(AB|BA)#?
