Re: AmiCygnix startup wait?

Same harddware here. 512 RAM. Takes about 2 minutes for a blank xscreen to appear tonight if I click the Abiword start icon. But so far Abiword itself hasn't started.

Using this from a shell, actually nothing happens, whether I run it from the prompt set at the cygnix directory or from the Amiga system prompt. (I've added the Cygnix stuff to the path in the startup-sequence}

What does nothing mean? Does the command return to the shell or does it freeze?
I suggest to use Snoopy to find out what happens while startup. Can you post a log here?

Since my first question here, I have removed everything Cygnix related (as far as I know) and re-installed from scratch. This time it didn't put ANYTHING in user-startup. I copied back what I posted above and put it in user-startup again.

There is something deeply wrong. Did you use the installer script for installation? Which mode did you use (advanced, expert)?

Was Xami part of the 1st gen Cygnix stuff? Otherwise, I don't remember installing any Xserver stuff since I tried Wolf Faust's stuff years ago on my A4000.

No, Xami was never part of Cygnix/AmiCygnix. There was only this startup script for XAmi users.

At least 24 seconds on my Sam.

Thanks! Hmm - that's slow. Are the AmiCygnix programs usable for you?

4 seconds??? Damn - I want a Pegasos 2

@TiredOfLife

How fast is it on your SAM?

I don't have any problems with SDK and AmiCygnix. I uploaded a crashlog of Idesk to os4depot because it crashes quite often on my system.

Had a look at the crashlog, but it didn't help me much. Could you do the same with an unstripped binary? I'll send you a PM with a link to a binary with debugging informations.

The X server can open it's display in a PIP (overlay) window on the workbench and on a custom screen.

And if that on a SAM

Interesting question. Can someone tell me, how long the startup needs on a SAM?

I installed the base archive and the extra archive and double clicked etc and bang, worked from day one.

I did have the SDK already installed prior to performing the above.

Now I really must get a proper darn printer

Whow - someone, who has no problems

Is the SDK still working? spotUp told me, that the SDK didn't work anymore after he installed AmiCygnx.

A printer is a problems these days. You could use a postscript printer with AmiCygnix.

@Paul

AmiCygnix needs about 8 seconds here from double click on the icon to a fully initialized desktop.
Config: AOne XE G4/800Mhz.

I guess you use the script "Start_AmiCygnix.bat" to launch AmiCygnix? Then the problem is, that the X server cannot be started. Please try to launch the server from a shell with:

xgeekppc :0 -screen Picasso96@1024x768x16

You should see an error message if there is a problem.

If you use the script "Start_XAmi.bat", then you have probably installed the XAmi package somewhere and this X server is used for AmiCygnix. This server is limited and slower than the server provided with AmiCygnix.

Maybe I'm wrong, but Helix Player seems to work only on Symbian systems. How can AmiCygnix help here?

How about PySol? (solitaire)

As Snuffy said, there is no Tcl/Tk or GTK module for Python available yet. So there is no way to port it at the moment.

Regarding AmiCygnix performance on Sam440, the main speed problem seems to be scrolling - you can see the CPU redrawing the bitmap at the new position. Same goes dragging windows in AmiCygnix.

If AmiCygnix could somehow use blitter-like operations (i.e let the gfx card do the work rather than the CPU), then I think AmiCygnix would be really FAAAAAST.

Yes, I agree, the server needs blitter support. I'm working on it and maybe I get some help.

The second problem I cannot solve. It's up to the GTK team to solve this. But I'm afraid they wont, because on a linux system this is no problem.

@Ricossa

I have a new version of AbiWord here, which supports some new input modules. One of them offers a way to insert special chars by typing user defined key combinations for example "'a" for ?.

Interested?

@Ricossa

Dead keys are not working under AmiCygnix, sorry. Seems to be a problem of the X server. I'm working on it.

The only way to insert such characters is the "add symbol" feature in AbiWord or if you have installed the tools package you can use the tool "Character map" available in the "Accessories" menu of lxpanel.
This is very uncomfortable, I know.

Re: Printing

@Slayer

You don't need to have a PS printer to print with AmiCygnix/Ghostscript!!!

This is the command I use in AmiCygnix (lpr):

Sys:Utilities/Ghostscript/gs -sDEVICE=amiga_printer -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -filename-

You see, that I use the amiga printer device. So if you are able to print with other apps using the systems printer driver, it should work.

Why? Once you have all libraries requried for any part of Mozilla ported to AmigaOS you should be able to build all of it (FireFox, ThunderBird, SeaMonkey, ...) with (next to) no additional work.

O.K. - that's true. Having the basic libs would make all ports possible. Hmm - the browser included in Seamonkey is Firefox I guess???

Do you know a unix program, which can do that?

Yep it's tue, Mozilla Suite is discontinued (latest version is 1.7.13 aniway) but you can try to port SeaMonkey

I would be happy, if I had Firefox. SeaMonkey is a even bigger project. Too big I would say at the moment.

Now, if I may ask something. I crated a folder inside the basic/installation drawer of AmiCygnix called Backdrops. There I placed several images (jpg format at 1680x1050). Whatever image I choose AmiCygnix doesn't seem to loaded. I got black and white horizontal lines. Why's that happen?

Very strange. Can you send me one of the pictures? Did you try to use an other picture format - e.g. PNG?

Re: Printing

@Slayer

Unix apps are always using the PS format for printing. So I decided to use Ghostscript to print documents under AmiCygnix. Ghostscript is part of the OS4 installation.

And here comes the trick: AmiPDF and AmiPS are also using Ghostscript for this and so you will get the same result. Hard to say, which program works incorrect - Ghostscript or the AmiCygnix app. You could try to print the PS document on windows?!

Let us port Firefox first . But anyway - I think it is not a good idea to port a software, where development is stopped.

Can you give me some details, why it doen't work? I also use the latest SDK now and I have no problems. The only thing I did was to deactivate some of the libs, nothing more.

Maybe there is a problem with the PATH environment variable? Did you set this variable?

Please make sure, that the AmiCygnix is executed after the SDK startup (in user-startup).

I do not have abc-shell, nor the SDK installed, do I need them?

No, the abc-shell is included in the base package and is located in "Cygnix:CygnixPPC/bin".

Quote:

That setenv SAVE command did the trick. The AmiCygnix 'dock' now works and I can also shut it down.

Great

Quote:

And yes, I do start it by double-clicking Start_AmiCygnix.bat.

One change I did make was to move the line which executes the Cygnix-startup from User-Startup to the AmiCygnix drawer. I changed the name to "ClickMe" and changed the default tool to C:IconX. For some reason it doesn't execute the Cygnix-Startup when I double click on it. I checked the icon settings and they are the same as the ones for Start_AmiCygnix.bat. Of course that wasn't my ONLY problem because even when I ran it from a Shell I was having problems.

It is not a good idea to change anything in the AmiCygnix startup. This is the only way AmiCygnix was tested. I know there is an issue, when a program launches another one - the path informations are lost. Maybe this is fixed in the next update.

Quote:

Just a suggestion, wouldn't it be just as easy to add a line to the beginning of Start_AmiCygnix.bat to execute Cygnix-Startup?

No, the problem is, that - for example - the path definitions will not be global, if you don't execute "Cygnix-Startup" in the user-startup. It must be executed there.
