Re: Website not working with RA/MUI OWB... [SOLVED]

@Raziel
I started up MUI-OWB, waited for that page to load and tried the gear button, no go... I did CTRL-F5 as you suggested, the page flashed, (presumably) rebuilt itself and then the gear worked!
Great! Problem solved. Many Thanks!

Maybe I wasn't clear about the two problems I've been encountering...
First, the "lazy" image loading. This problem manifests itself from the second or third article in the blog on down, where you see a article title (in large blue text) and then a white space and a few paragraphs of text...
That white space should be a picture in most articles. In both OWB and MUI-OWB I encounter this problem. The "lazy" image loading isn't working.
Second, in the black horizontal bar near the top of the page there is a "button" with a gear icon in it. One should be able to click that to set the preferences for the website. In those preferences you can turn off the "lazy" image loading. This is the website feature that used to work that no longer does.
Now when I click the gear in either OWB or MUI-OWB it does nothing or just shows a pop-up "hint" telling you what the button is. In the past, when you clicked that button, the page would go dark and white box would appears with settings to configure.
As you suggested, I tried running MUI-OWB with the "cookiecollection.db" file moved away. It made no difference with the problems of this website.
With OWB, I have an old script that copies OWB to RAM and runs it from there... So cookies never get saved back to the disk.
Anything else you guys can think of or suggest?
Thanks!

A website not working with RA/MUI OWB...

Hey guys, When I do my web rounds, I try to keep up with this website: http://www.autoblog.comIt used to work well with IBrowse... then they "improved" it.... It used to work with the OWB brothers... Apparently, they "improved" it again... From what they say, the website uses some sort of "lazy" image loading. The page loads OK in the RA/MUI OWB, but the graphics for most of the articles don't load. I used to be able to hit the gear button in the top title bar to turn off the lazy image loading, but now that doesn't even work anymore. Previously, the screen would turn black and pop-up panel that let me turn off this BS, now it won't even do that. Anyone have any tricks that might get this site working again? ....or is there something that could be done to MUI-OWB which could fix all this? I really don't want to use my godforsaken Mac to use this website. Thanks, PJS

Hey guys, I've used a classic Amiga web development system called "WebLord"... http://ringlord.com/weblord.html A while ago, the developer switched this system to Java from Amiga C code. Without any graphics, etc., I am wondering whether the new Java versions this software should be able to run on JAmiga. What do you guys think? Thanks, PJS

@All
FWIW, Jamie had a table and was demonstrating AVD at last year's 2010 AmiWest.
I don't know when that EMail (quoted above) from Jamie was written, I don't recall him saying he was having hardware issues at showtime.
Anyway, he gave great demos of how various components worked and had a lot of plans for the suite. The GUI builder is impressive.
Hopefully, we see him this October at AmiWest with the results.

Why, yes.... enjoying the hell out of it. As for OSX, I completely agree... It's a pig running on a multi-gigahertz, multi-core Macs, so it would just crawl on any hardware we have or will have. Besides, setting aside the eye-candy, what did OSX really do for the Macs? Real multitasking!? We already have that! ;) PJS

Hi All,
I'm in with Antique... I'd also be glad to contribute to a Sheepshaver bounty.
Yes, just being able to run Mac Classic apps is somewhat less productive then OSX... But then you can run the Mac emulation while running AmigaOS.
To me, MacOnLinux just turns your Amiga into a Mac... I've already got Macs. I'd rather turn them into Amigas!

With regular digital cameras, I tried a bunch and had very good luck with OS4's PTP driver. It has worked with at least a Sony, two Kodaks, an HP, a couple Canons, a Nikon. Maybe I'm forgetting some?
GSM? Do you mean a phone's camera?
In that case, I haven't seen a phone that does the USB PTP mode. Many phones will emulate a mass storage device, but there can still be a lot of compatibility issues.
On my Android phone, I've used a variety of FTP Server apps and just connected to the phone (via Wifi) and transfered pictures, music, etc. to/from with AmiFTP.
Of course, pulling the memory card and using a USB card reader is always an option.
Good luck,

@orgin Your scratch Snack! is an impressive accomplishment, when one considers how it compares to XOOPS.
I really don't want to look a gift horse in the mouth... I really do appreciate the unrewarded efforts the Ops have put into getting the site back up and running!
But I wonder... what wonderful things has the XOOPS server provided visitors (over Snack!) in exchange for the loss of native Amiga browser compatibility?
What's the argument for not using Snack! and allowing Amigans the use of IBrowse, etc.?
Thanks,

@ceyhan
FWIW, I used to print with my OS4.1 A1-XE to a networked HP LaserJet 4 using the LPR driver. A couple months ago, our LJ4 took a powder and we got an HP OfficeJet 8500Pro (all in one printer, fax, scanner, etc.).
Using the exact same settings and graphic print settings from the LJ4, I changed the IP address in the LPR config to the new printer and was printing again with the new HP (in greyscale).
So it seems the old HP LaserJet output still works with (some?) new HP printers.
You might have similar luck?
Good luck,

@Dandy
I have really mixed feelings about this... on one hand, I'd either kill or pay thousands of dollars for a real, productive & reliable CAD program on AmigaOS4. On the other hand, I don't believe it will happen and it seems like the bar is set really low.
Take DynaCADD - from what I recall (and I see in the attached thread) it was a pretty crude program. IIRC, it didn't even use windows or have an ability to open multiple documents. That's pretty backwards.
Yes, it's better than nothing... I don't really want to be discouraging... but then I use CAD for a living and, as such, it has to work *WELL*. So you could count me in for moderate support, just to support the Amiga.
Give me an OS4 port of even the ancient MiniCAD 7 (with more modern file import/export) and I'd be THRILLED... and I'd be glad to pay exponentially more it.
Thanks,
PJS

@Ant I've been running ImageFx with Petunia on my SAM and XE, on all versions of OS4 up through OS4.1 update 2. It's generally been quite stable. There are a few areas where you learn to stay away from, like the text tool. And if I run the debug kernel, I get a couple recoverable DSI's at startup. But all in all, I've done a lot of image processing with it, built a large website and so it's been very productive for me. And, fortunately, OS4 also reboots quickly. PJS

Hi all, Last weekend at AmiWest, I did quick tour of applications you could use on your OS4 Amiga to get things done. Little things that might let you enjoy your Amiga more and avoid lesser platforms longer! A few people asked for a summary, so I've put together the follow page listing the apps I showed (or should have): http://www.pjsa.net/Apps.htmlHope this is helpful! And let me pass on my THANKS to everyone at SACC for putting on a great show! Your efforts are very much appreciated. PJS

@vox Quote: - USB Scanner and Laser printer drivers (HP, Cannon)
Wow. I'm really surprised printing got such a minor and unique mention. The AmigaOS printing system was decrepit when Commodore was circling the drain and the intervening 16+ years hasn't helped much. Will replacing some drivers help enough? We really could use a new system. And whenever OpenOffice appears, this shortcoming will get even more blatant. Does this mean a port of CUPS, like OSX did? Hopefully a much better job than Apple did. We shall see. PJS

@vox Quote: vox wrote: All In One printers are even more complex devices, depending on drivers, and I hardly believe that without proper driver they will work under OS4.
Above frontend (and scanners that it supports) seems to be only solution at this moment.
FWIW, I just bought an HP all-in-one for my office and it's been working better than expected with my A1-XE. First, it scans & EMails PDFs and that's been working fine with AmiPDF (there's a little complaining about a malformed "DCT", but no tangible issues). From there, it's trivial get scans into ImageFX. Second, the HP has a web interface that works with OS4. I haven't tried scanning with it yet, but it even works (mostly) with IBrowse. Last, while I've yet to get the HP printing with my %$#&^##$ Mac, I was surprised to find that using the OS4 HP LaserJet4 driver & the LPR device, I've been able to print wonderful grey-scale output from AmiPDF, FinalWriter & Pagestream. Still gotta get color printing working. So don't automatically count out modern scanner/printers! Just be sure to buy from a place with a good return policy. If that doesn't work, you can always look for old flat-bed scanners that work with ImageFX. PJS

@djrikki
This sounds like a great idea.
I'd guess that doing it in a well thought out XML file might be the easiest way to do it. Doesn't theoretically require anything special for creation & editing.
One XML file per application?
How would one track different command sets for different versions of a program?
Theoretically, that could become fairly cumbersome.
hmmm...

Hey guys, @328gts Quote: 328gts wrote: would love to edit some of my AutoCad drawings on my Amiga ..a simple 2D CAD program that allows importing/exporting dxf files should do...
I get the impression some in this thread are confusing CAD programs (particularly Architectural) with simple drawing programs. For those that haven't used CAD programs, they typically include the ability to draw, manipulate and edit things at different "scales" than what you see on the paper. Beyond that, they have a much deeper selection of tools and capabilities ("snapping", "layers", programmability, etc.) than a common drawing program. AFAIK, Pagestream (as great a DTP app as it has been) has never tried to offer most of these drafting capablities. DynaCADD, Cycas and a few other Amiga CAD programs have appeared over the years. But none have ever been close to "modern" or have seen their code touched in decades. A real pity. I'd love to scrap using Macs for my CAD work. PJS
