Re: LaTeX for OS4?

Home away from home

@salass00

A year ago I would have added myself to the list of Latex users. Unfortunately my academic supervisor doesn't like it and I encountered a conference that insisted on MS Word documents. I've had no choice but to switch to MS Word. However, I still use Bibtex for referencing (thanks to a nice little plugin).

I think that Latex is important enough to port. I just don't have the skills required. I tried AmiWeb2c, but it just didn't work properly.

Have you tried this address?

Just tried it and got a delivery failed notification.

Depending on what sort of encryption you need, if it can be done through an external program, PGP is probably the best bet here. If extreme paranoia security isn't key, then one of the XPK along with a (user-selectable) encryption library would probably suffice (hmm, except that won't be very portable to other OS).

I don't think AmiSSL can be used because it needs to negotiate with a SSL-capable server - it can't do local encryption (AFAIK anyway)

Chris

I haven't tried it, but you are supposed to be able to create and sign local certificates using AmiSSL (at least you can with OpenSSL, on which it's based). I'd imagine that you could do local encryption. Otherwise, you could temporarily create a local server.

@cygnusEd

Isn't there a way to add multiple directories to a single assign? Something like:
assign bin: SDK:bin/
assign bin: CYGNIX:bin/ add

If this is possible, then you should be able to fix the compatibility issues.

I have Cygnix installed here and haven't ever had to disable any assigns in order to use the OS4 SDK.

Or do you mean the Cygnix SDK interferes (I haven't installed that here)?

No, just Cygnix. After I installed Cygnix, running gcc made the system ask me to insert/mount various volumes. I'm surprised that you didn't have any problems. Do you VBCC instead of GCC? GCC uses a kind of pseudo Unix environment including /bin /usr directories. So does Cygnix. That's why the interfere with one-another. I can't switch to VBCC because I use C++.

Instruction cache throttling. Instead of forwarding one (for example on 750 CPUs, more on some other PowerPC CPUs, for example 3 on e600 cores, don't know if it's 1 or more on the 7451/7455 CPUs) instruction each clock cycle from the intruction cache it's only done every x cycles.

I'm using the maximum possible slowdown, 255, i.e. you have something like a 3.1 MHz CPU when it's active

In that case, I'm impressed with how efficient AmigaOS still is. My 3.1MHz PowerPC G4 system was still usable.

The CPU temp started dropping almost instantly so this method is definitely effective. It's a pity that we can't change the clock frequency on the fly as that would have a bigger effect on power usage and CPU temperature. Laptops do that when using running on batteries.

EDIT: As a sidenote, it's nice to see the CPU temp (measured by a temp probe) drop instead of rise when the CPU is idle. When I first installed it, the temperature rose by a few degrees when idle, compared to max load. Possibly comething that the CPUClock docky was doing.

Well actually I have attempted to port Lunapaint after hearing it went open source. Initial work only took a few hours.

And it *almost* works! However there's a fundamental bug somewhere that's stopping it dead but when I get some more time I'll have another go. It does start, load the toolbar and look pretty though!

From the Lunapaint FAQ:
Quote:

When I try to open Lunapaint in [resolution] it crashes immediately! Why?

1. You have forgotten to set the bitdepth to 24 and the width and height to default (or to the width and height of the actual display).
2. You have forgotten to assign Lunapaint: to the directory you installed it in.

You might want to check that, although that crash should really be fixed so that you don't have to do those two things.

Similar reasons are responsible for the version numbers of

Where can I find this third-party version? I've managed to find a version 41.6 on the aminet.

I've been using the headers as well, but the information is not as clear as you think. There is no definite, "here are the input parameters, this is what is output" documentation there, although it's all implied. Moreover, people starting out don't think to look in header files. A lot of people put their documentation in their .c files instead of the header where it should be.

While experimenting with the gif anim format, performance in Hollywood increased dramatically the moment I enabled 24-bit bitmaps. Unfortunately, the animation datatype can't handle those. The performance issue seems to be because the datatype converts from chunky to planar and then to display it, you have to convert back to chunky again.

Regarding the limitations, I agree that adding support for truecolour bitmaps, streaming, encoder prefs menu popup, etc. would make the datatypes much more useful. Looking at the animation datatype itself, I think that it could easily be improved and extended. There was a group several years ago that were going to attempt this, but it died. It's all a matter of a group getting together and officially extending it.

Even if you use custom viewers for watching, datatypes would still be useful for reading manipulating and saving datatypes. I'd be interested in helping out with advancing the datatypes, the animation datatype in particular.

EDIT: Or should I create a video.datatype class?

EDIT: Should I consider writing a video datatype for truecolour video data? Or is extending the animation datatype planned?

Any idea what's happening with the sound datatype? Someone uploaded a replacement on os4depot that supports 16-bit multi-channel sounds. Will an official extension with those features occur?

@salass00

My experimentation with the gifanim confirms what you're saying. If I override the GM_RENDER method, it no longer crashes (until I click on the invisible tapedeck.gadget object that the datatype contains) so the bug is somewhere in the GM_RENDER code for the animation datatype.

I hope that this will be fixed soon. Unfortunately, I have no idea who is maintaining the animation datatype, so I don't know who to contact.

Aren't tags enough? Or I misunderstood you.

No, they're not enough. Take ADTM_LOADFRAME for example. The msg parameter (arguement) is supposed to be a pointer to a variable of type struct adtFrame and alf_TimeStamp within the passed struct is supposed to be set to the desired timestamp. Without this information, you can't use ADTM_LOADFRAME, or write a datatype that has an ADTM_LOADFRAME method. The autodoc simply lists the valid MethodIDs, not what the parameters and return data are for the methods.

Difficulty in finding this information is probably one of the biggest reasons why we have so few datatypes.

Re: Where is the SDK?

@TetiSoft & ssolie

I've found another item that could use a big update. The datatypes documentation. For example, the animation_dtc autodoc lists the methods that an animation datatype has, but not what arguements they take, etc. That documentation seems to be embedded in the datatype source-code for datatypes released with source. Even then, there are tricks such as alf->alf_UserData possibly pointing to a previous frame that should be unloaded.

For the benefit of both datatype users and implementors, these details really should be moved out of example source-code and into the docs. Also the base datatype class has no autodoc, and hence no documentation on its methods.

No, it's not a game. It's a system for people to communicate over the internet, but using a 3D virtual world instead of the old chat windows and such. Everyone has a 3D avatar which they can customize, etc. It seems to be heading for great success. You can read about it on wikipedia

Actually, it's a lot more like a game than you think. It's definitely a lot more than a communication system. I've never tried it personally, but you can buy/sell virtual property, run a virtual business. There have even been cases of people being scammed in the virtual world. Oh, and people spend real-world money on this game too. Looking at the second life website, you can buy a virtual island for the bargain price of $1000-$2000 USD.

Here's another in a thread that you posted in:
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/v ... hp?topic_id=15867&forum=2

The above was more sophisticated and ambitious and included tools for each individual developer to manage their work on a true project basis, including the ability to enlist their own testers, receive donations, give progress reports, etc.

That thread never really said what it was about. It sounds useful though. I have a feeling that Amifund was supposed to head in that direction but lack of interest caused it to stagnate.

I hope that someone that used the beta of that site can comment. Otherwise I can always query wegster over on AW.net.

Ever heard of Amifund?

There's a site called Amifund that was originally set up so that people could list development projects they were working on and others could donate to help support the developers. Unfortunately it seems that this site is almost completely unknown, and hence it is relatively unused. Even developers hardly know about it.

So, had you heard about it before reading this? Any suggestions for improving it? I think that it could be a useful site. We don't have a donation/bounty site such as those for Aros and Morphos.

The site is still under development but progress stagnated a while ago (well, what's the point if no-one's using it). It's all a matter of this site being used more.

@COBRA

I can't find th thread here because the search function ignores words shorter than 5 characters, but the Friedens mentioned that the graphics subsystem was going to be replaced and that planning/designing the new API had begun. They also said that Warp3D has a huge overhead due to the reinitialization that has to happen every frame. This is caused by the fact that the 3D graphics system is totally separate from the 2D system.

I hope that they get plenty of time to work on this because we're not likely to see MESA + HW drivers (for newer cards) before this is done.
