Re: X11 Forwarding via AmiCygnix?

@virgola

That's great, very interesting. Is the window manager running on the linux side or the amiga side? Can you get an Amiga look and feel? I remember years ago there was an 'amiwm' for linux that had a amiga look and feel.

I thought RDP was windows only, is there a RDP server for Linux then?

Please lobby them to make it integrated with a proper package management / auto update solution

Using this technique could you e.g. run Firefox on a raspberry Pi with the GUI on your Amiga?

That's great but is there a reason it exists when there's already aminet? Having to check both to see if one has the newest version of a file depending on whether the developer was diligent to put it on both is a real pain and cause of much confusion if you have say, something that is on aminet that contains both os3 and os4 builds, and then something on os4 which may or may not be by the same dev or might be a different port or different app with the same name by a different dev, which may be newer, or older, or based on a different sourcecode fork, than the one on aminet, or may not be, or may be.

At the very least wouldn't it make sense to integrate it with the amiupdate tool so it offers something different from Aminet, and because amiupdate is so half baked?

Turning it into something like an Amiga version of an apt repository would be tremendously useful.

Is there any implementation of AHI sound card driver for OS4 ? I know some work with Poseidon stack but OS4 stack is missing more drivers I guess?

What new subsystems does AmigaOS need?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

Hi

I'm interested in people's ideas as to what new subsystems AmigaOS - 3 or 4, although 4 has a bit more than 3 (e.g. built in USB) these days - you think AmigaOS needs to remain useful and relevant at least for the hobbyist community.

AmigaOS highly extensible structure has allowed third parties to fill many gaps over the years, from new filesystems to new bitmap datatypes, to mini apps that replicate functionality built in on other systems.

But there are some things where a common standard or common set of APIs with deep OS integration enables and fosters wider innovation, whether that's something we got in OS3 like the datatypes system, or something added by third parties that became a defacto standard, like Picasso96, AHI or Poseidon.

Some ideas I have would include:

- a proper 'sources and sinks' multimedia framework with support for stream i/o, containers, codecs, capture and render devices, not unlike QuickTime or gstreamer which is exactly that. Even a properly integrated port of gstreamer would do the job. It could be integrated also into datatypes, which is missing streaming/progressive playback and currently treats data formats as monolithic container-codec-data entities.

- a webkit (or similar) browser port, but one built as a system service, with the headless webview as a window class, and libraries such as javascript interpreters made available independently of the primary browser that uses them. Of course, this is probably the most ambitious of any potential projects and not necessarily practical for classic hardware. But it would unlock the ability to run spotify, gmail, office365 and all the rest meaning that the lack of modern productivity apps was no longer a limitation. And architecting it this way would allow standalone web apps using e.g. the electronJS framework.

- a properly integrated UNIX subsystem, and for this we've always been pretty close to being able to do this, from the original ixemul, to the improved POSIX support in newlib, to AmiCygnix.

- a 'WarpOS' type standard for using Arm co-processors with native Arm code for critical sections

- a standardised WiFi system. Yes we do have some SANA2 drivers and they are not that different from ethernet drivers but they require a management tool for management of connections and it would be nice to have a common GUI, perhaps a Commodity, that would integrate with the wider system better, for example with a Docky.

What ideas do you have?

From what i understand radeon v3 doesn't add much in terms of compatibility, it unlocks some more features for nova. The 2.22 version in enhancer plus does a nice job for me with my non-nova capable card.

The boot taking a long time with no card is probably a timeout, the adapter board is probably waiting to hear from any board attached to it and eventually gives up.

Hi no I never heard of CPU Watcher. Also I have no means to capture serial debug output.

I will try and reproduce consistently to produce bug report when i get some time. Is there a public bug tracker? Or we must go through privileged person only?

As for ethernet lockups on sam460, i didn't notice it yet because i'm using a wifi but i can try and see if i can reproduce using ethernet.

What's wrong with the built in ethernet?

I am using an atheros5000 based 3Com wifi card but it's full length (but i have been looking at PCIE to PCI adapters since it's low profile) to see if I could put it in the PCIE slot.
