Re: wxWidgets bounty - please share your thoughts!

@ferrels

Everyone would like Mozilla but I don't think that would be the main point of a wxWidgets port.
wxMozilla (which I never knew existed!) also seems pretty dead to me, so even if we got wxWidgets would a port be feasible??

@Kreciu

What exactly do you need UAE with JIT for?

Most games run fine without JIT and most applications run fine with Petunia which has got JIT.

You mention Scala, but then I'd rather see you support Hollywood, an existing application that is still being developed.

I personally don't think it's worth the effort but it is also not very often I use UAE on my A1.

@TSK

One good thing about wxWidgets is that it would allow Amiga developers to reach a larger target audience.

Lets face it, AmigaOS4 is a very small market to develop for but if you used wxWidgets your applications would be easier to port to all major operating systems.

Example is Audio-Evolution that now uses wxWidgets (from v5) and runs on windows, macos, linux but not OS4(yet).
Just mailed Davy and we will get a port as well when/if wxWidgets becomes available.

@Spirantho

wxWidgets has just been suggested on www.amigabounty.net and it seems like a VERY good project if you ask me.

Which applications will be within reach if we get wxWidgets. I mean applications that doesn't have many other dependencies.

Would it be possible to make a list of our most desired applications (f.ex. a top ten).
Then take this list and work out the dependencies the applications have.
Then start work on the most needed dependencies in prioritized order?

It's very important we are realistic in what can be achieved.

@TSK

My first thought was to put the SAM board inside an A600 (which I guess should be doable).

I then bought 2 A600 and while playing around with them I cam e to the conclusion that i could not live with the keyboard an A600/1200 has got anymore.

Then i thought of a new keyboard and then I picked up the laptops and...

I really want a portable Amiga!

I had thought others would have done a conversion by now, thats part of the reason I have waited buying a SAM. Guess it's either not doable or to hard/expensive to bother.

I will just think about the project for now and then see whats doable and available in February when I'm back from holiday in Bali

Laptop screens seems to connect via LVDS which might be onboard the SAM.

Just read the SAM manual on Acubes site. Seems the SAM board already have LVDS socket onboard, or if I'm really unlucky it's just prepared for it.

Hi Niels

The manual also talks about LVDS (J26), is that socket actually mounted on the board?

Ok, checked various photos and there seems to be a socket.

@TCD

Just acquired an Amiga 600 (well actually two since I won some Ebay auction as well) and will see if a SAM board will fit inside (might be dissapointed).

Wont have much time to tinker with the project for now and wont get a SAM until February, but lots to speculate about until then.

What does the SAM measure in height? I Think the power connector might be a problem.

I brought 2 old notebooks home from work the other day, lots of good parts
Any way to hook the RADEON M9 up to a laptop screen?
Does the M9 have a LVDS interface since it was? created for laptops?

@Atheist
I hope something positive comes out of this meeting.

Ideally Amiga Inc agrees to sell Amiga.com and all Amiga related trademarks to Hyperion for a fair price.

-----------------------------------------------------------
Amiga Inc can't be in the business to sell software but what they do to earn money I don't know.
They would need new products and a much larger catalog if they where going to sell software for a living.

They released AA2 and since then we heard nothing. They are not trying to push AA2 at all and to be honest AA2 doesn't seem to have much to offer.

Another question could then be if it is feasible for Hyperion to go into browser porting?

Since a webbrowser is a requirement for any platform these days and often part of the OS package.

@RacerX

IF Hyperion was to do any browser for AmigaOS4 I really hope they would focus on Firefox.
Firefox is well known on other platforms and is used by a lot of people and see frequent updates.

Making their own browser from scratch wouldn't make any sense. Perhaps if possible, buying IBrowse and using the webkit engine could make sense, but I say they should go for Firefox.

btw:I would really like to see someone take those bounty money.
