The Moana project was actually revealed in the court documents. It's not a new computer, its a port of OS4 to PPC Mac.

Minimac specifically.

I'll refrain from throwing out the project name for a higher end SAM, else AI start dragging more project names into the legal proceedings for no sane reason.

The fact that it "seemed" to work ok in another machine and that is "seemed" to pass memtester both mean little here.
The only sure way we know to check memory and isolate potential issues is to test memory -outside- of the A1 environment.
Then, if it is judged sound, put it back in the A1.
That way, at least the memory itself can be removed from the trouble shooting equation.

@Chris

ISTR you have to change something in the U-Boot boot args to redirect debug output back to serial. You can also do it after OS4 is up and running with:
kdebug "console serial"
(I think)

It's actually "kdebug {command}", which is a combination of level and redirection based on the level of debug required.
"0" was suggested for most people, and that's what I use unless told otherwise.

@lylehaze

See docs/kernel/kdebug.readme

My s-s reads:

; $VER: Startup-Sequence 52.5 (03.07.2007)

kdebug "debuglevel 0" >NIL:
kdebug "console memory" >NIL:

etc.

Yes, serial already goes to console by default now, but that would only read things like "dropped irq" when using "dumpdebugbuffer > {filename]. You need the above, in addition, for "kernel".

One thing to watch Lyle, although maybe not related to your issue.
If everything worked fine before, check your s-s and paste any missing entries from your working setup back into the new s-s.

Don't trust "memtester" running on OS4.
Testing the module outside of the A1 environment is -way-
more authoritative.

Oh...and Kjetil.."sensuality designed" would indicate it was designed for sexual pleasure, so I think you meant perhaps "specially designed"?

@Chris

So you're getting the same thing?

I did. But...

When I asked someone else to confirm what -we- had both seen, they said "no". Then, after comparing the versions #s we were using for said tests, I noticed we were not comparing the results from the exact same versions.

That's why I also included the "version full" for my differing results with RC and exp. With 2 versions of RC1, one version of RC2 and 3 of exp, I deemed it necessary

ok. So, most of the time we can say "blah blah with latest [program name]" But MPlayer really has so many possible places to fall over, I think we need to be more specific in reporting anomalies. The most troubling is still the parameter list being different from version to version. This gets further complicated if users employ the wrong GUI for the wrong version. Then we have the ellusive "codecs conf" directory contents. In that case, internal conflicts with what the "codecs conf" file says. So, some versions you use that file, some not. Then there are the differing responses to "fonts", depending on whether you have the old "fonts" directory installed or not. On top of that and more, we have the lack of arexx stop still hanging out there. Playing .mp3 or an A/V file where ONLY the audio codec is recognized/accepted still causes the audio to play without option to abort (through the GUI). You can close the program, hit escape...nothing stops it. However, in shell "abort" still works for the same condition on the same version.
As far as features go, it still needs television like controls to adjust brightness, contrast, tint, saturation, etc. on the fly.
The issue of non-supported codecs will also dog us, because of licensing issues such as those for the PPC linux codecs.

In short, the program will need a bit more fine tuning before it can become the kind of A/V player that satisfies most needs. That too, becomes difficult when we can only test it on hardware that cannot playback A/V properly, as clearly shown through the debug feedback. Let's be honest...as time gets devoted to making slight improvements in -that- area, the general market keeps releasing more stressful codecs that our systems can not handle.
(Not a rant, just my honest appraisal of where I feel the program stands at present)

Quote:
It must be an intermittent bug in MPlayer, a bit like the USB Prefs one.

I can not conclude that at this juncture, mostly due to all the other things mentioned above.

@Chris

Just checked under shell:
Yep.
G3 version now requires -vo sdl also for RC#2.
No entry required for audio.
version full MPLayer_G3
MPlayer Epiphany Version (2006-01-06)
^^This should read 2007. Oh well.
(Andrea and numbers, lol)

Also checked with exp#3, which I also still use.
All that required was MPlayer [filename].
version full mplayer
MPlayer for AmigaOS4 dev-SVN-r19364

Hmmm...we may need afxgroup to confirm.

The notes on RC#2 indicate a change would have to be made anyway at some point, so no biggie.

Is it actually possible to disable the overlay functionality of the graphics card driver? How do I get it back? Could something else be wrong?

Sure.
Usually due to settings in the GUI: wrong version of GUI used for wrong version of MPlayer, multiple copies of MPlayer on system with wrong path in GUI, etc.
Check those 1st.

Re: Universe - Zero

@Crumb

"BTW, is it possible to run WarpOS stuff on OS4-final?"

Strongly advise against.
Powerpc.library was removed from final and it is not recommended to replace it.
Side effects (DSI) caused by powerpc.library will crop up and confuse testing of otherwise sound apps.
Better answer is to keep a dedicated update #4 partition, or better yet...an update #3 partition, since some WOS programs that functioned under #3 did not under #4.

@Jahc

Same answer.
For Universe (both), iirc, update #3 worked.
Try a dedicated boot partition for update #3 and we can compare notes on working apps if you like.

For "zero" you might want the refresher course from this thread:
http://amigaworld.net/modules/newbb/v ... hp?topic_id=14075&forum=2

"two" is here along with some notes from Crisot outlining the issues:

Re: I'm Smiling

@WOS convo

Just a note from personal experience.
FroggerNG (WOS) old version V2.05 for registered users does provide (through the linux PPC codecs) the means to playback Intel Indeo V3/4/5 and others than are not supported in MPlayer/DVPlayer undoubtedly because of licensing issues.

Whether you believe such formats are worth supporting or whether the licensing issues are insurmountable is unknown to me.

Some people argue to merely convert all old formats to new codecs that OS4 supports. I personally don't think that's a user friendly solution.

Re:AHI

Yep.

FroggerNG AHI broke at some point.
I substituted audio.device for AHI playback and the "unable to lock" errors disappeared.

Final, however, we know breaks the program further. Please forgive my description. Not meaning to offend. You can say program is broken, so final is not compatible -with- it.

Just my 2 cents.

Seems to make no difference here

That's because if it works with YES it will still boot with it set to NO (polling, as opposed to hardware triggered)

The booting issues (non-boot) described in the thread on AW refer to machines with radeon that do not boot with the tooltype set to YES. Only when set to NO.

btw-There is an awful lot of bad spelling going on re: the name of the tooltype AND the setting.

Scan this thread and the one on AW if you don't believe me.
Mispelling of either tooltype OR setting will lead you to rotten conclusions here.
