AmigaOS 4.0, my thoughts, your thoughts?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

Christmas 2006 OS4 has finally gone gold. It was the last update for AmigaOS 4.0.
What next? Will Hyperion develop it further so that we can play with OS 4.1 around Christmas 2007 and OS 4.2 around Christmas 2008?

Can there be a coexistence of OS4.1 from Hyperion and OS5 from Amiga Inc?
What do you think about Bill McEwen's announcement of AmigaOS5? Do you think this is for real or only a lie? On which CPU and OS architecture might it be based?
What is the future path of AmigaOS? Is there a long-term strategy to make it profitable for Hyperion or Amiga Inc? I think a shrink-wrapped AmigaOS that is not bundled with hardware will be the right way for Hyperion to make a lot of sales. Port AmigaOS 4 or 5 to the Playstation 3 and it will sell like hot cakes! Yummy!

I know that we can't predict the future, nobody has that crystal ball! But at least we can speculate and dream of nice stuffs.

I agree, next we need is a good browser. What about IBrowse 3.0 for next Christmas?

Abiword is great, I have used it on my Intel Coreduo PC and it's very fast and light-weigt! It runs extremely fast and is much more responsive than Word from Microcrap or OpenOffice. I think the programmer grew up with the Amiga and learnt how to programm efficient appz!

@cirabre

Thank you for the enlightment!

@Atheist

I think IBM completely lost interest in the desktop market. They are pursuing different business models now and building a Cell motherboard for Amiga users is simply not realistic. For example, they also sold their notebook production department to an Asian company called Lenovo. I have one of the old IBM Thinkpads, very sturdy, you just can't break it! The notebooks from Lenovo in contrast feel very cheap compared to that, but they can get some sales because they bought the trademark.
Concerning IBM PPC and the desktop I think that after Apple's move to x86, PPC is very dead as a desktop computer CPU. But in other areas, PPC is doing very well! If Amiga Inc. and Hyperion decide to stay with PPC, then they need to hit the embedded market and gain industrial clients which can use a customizable and light-weight AmigaOS in embedded devices. It sounds sad for us, but I cannot blame them that they want to make profits after 6 years of hard work on OS4!

There are arguments both ways but in the end it will be a management decision and management decisions rarely, if ever, make any logical sense from my experience. Therefore, I guess they will be sold bundled just because that makes the least amount of sense.

Tell me about it! I am just reading the final chapters of "On the Edge: the Spectacular Rise and Fall of Commodore" and it's SO FRUSTRATING to see how much engineering-potential got lost by some STUPID management decisions. Hombre, AAA, A3000+ and all this great stuff!! All lost...
Sorry for the shouting, but didn't you feel the same while reading the book?

Let's hope that the same mistakes are not made again.
We need to get our hardware out to the people! Samantha's for everyone! Not !!!only!!! bundling.

Indeed, I should temper my enthusiasm until Amiga Inc. and ACube have agreed on a license. If negotiations fail, I already know who is to blame. Not ACube, that's for sure!

Hi Helge,

If it's optional, then they won't be inclined to pay for it.

Why should they pay for it if they don't want it? As I said, there are PPC-freaks out there who are primarily interested in OS like Linux, Solaris and such, but NOT in AmigaOS.
They would never buy a Samantha when they have to pay $175 extra for an OS they don't want. Simple, isn't it?
Would you still buy your weekly pack of $3 Kellogg's Frosties when it would cost you $8 instead, only because they package it together with a pink plastic spoon?

Samantha will be more successful when it is also made available to non-Amiga people. Industry, embedded applications, but also the Linux, BSD, Solaris on PPC freaks. And the mainboard !!has!! some interesting characteristics for these people, low-power, FPGA, ...

They worked !!so!! hard on this mainboard and now you want to tell them that they should only sell it to marginal proportions of potential buyers, thereby making less profits?
I don't understand the logic behind it.

I beg your pardon? The thread title reads "ScummVM 0.9.1 68k released". Nevertheless you mentioned a glitch/bug in the OS4 build. Then you asked if somebody can reproduce your bug.

Note that bugs can be either in !!all!! builds (Windows, OS4, 68k, Symbian) or they can be only in one of the ports, due to things that are system specific.

If the bug with picking up objects would be a general ScummVM 0.91 bug, then it would have also appeared on my Nokia E61 port. Got it? Good.

Sorry for trying to help.

I think that only industrial clientele will be able to buy Samantha without AOS4.x CDs.

I hope that everyone will be able to buy Samantha, even without AOS4.x CDs. Why?
Because there are people who want to run Linux and other OS on Samantha instead of AOS4.x. I know some people who are interested in PPC, but not in AmigaOS. Samantha is a great board for them!
They will sell more Samantha mainboards this way which can only be a good thing: The people behind the Samantha will get more profits, because more units are sold. More units sold means that larger production runs can be made, lowering prices of Samantha.
This means that more people will buy it and also that OS4 will be more widespread and a bigger success after all.
Why not give the people behind Samantha the possibility to greater economic success? They took great risks with this venture of bringing us new hardware!

I think ACube should offer a bundled and non-bundled version of Samantha to !!!all!!! consumers!

I hope they will sort of the OS4-license soon! Maybe selling SAM without a license and OS4 should still be an option for the product launch in Q1 2007?

Only sad if license talks fail. Everyone will be stuck with Linux.

@mr2

That's a fair price. Vista costs much more... well... Vista has these nice glass-effects and an integrated firewall, but still...

So does it come bundled with SAM? Can I buy SAM without OS4 if I intend to... maybe first use Linux and later decide to start with OS4?

I agree, a new Warpos or Powerup version does make much more sense!
To make any use of a 68k-version, you will at least need a Coldfire CPU.

Thanks! 350 EUR doesn't sound too shabby, really. That price ROCKS actually!

How much do I have to spend for a copy of OS4.0? Will it be bundled with SAM or made available separately? Can I use the same Cdrom to install OS4.0 on a Cyberstom PPC?

Oh you are lucky! I have a spam folder, but sometimes personal emails from friends are classified as SPAM.
That's why I always have to go through the emails in my spam folder to see if they are really SPAM.
It feels like wading through the mud! Mud being words like penis, vagina, anal, free sex, and such...
I can't believe how anybody can react to that SPAM or click on any of the links.

Hence my suggestion of running 68k Quake in AGA mode at a given screensize using the speed test function.

That's also a good suggestion. I'm basically happy with any kind of benchmark. I don't care about responsiveness and subjective feelings when I am only interested in real number crunching.
Bring on Quake, Sysinfo or AIBB and heat up the CPU's!

That brings up a question: How hot are PPC CPU's allowed to get? Are there any spec-sheets to look at?
