Re: Any altivec experts? (H.264 codec)
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

Hi liveforit, tommysammy and all,

I'd like to suggest including the AmigaOS startup code into
MPlayer for handling "Project" files, etc., so it can
finally be used as a def_icons "Tool" and let users just
double-click on vids to play them.

Simple enough that *I* could figure it out. ;) ...

http://wiki.amigaos.net/wiki/AmiWest_Lesson_1#Program_Startup

re: Installation - I'd also suggest an installer seems like
overkill, but I think it would be good if the distrib
did a couple things to make it easy for the user:

First, keep the archive so it creates a directory. The
user can then just grab it and move it wherever they
want. No fuss, no muss!

Finally, make any default config file(s) separate from any
config file(s) created by the user - f.e. have a
"default.config" and let the user create their own
"user.config" file if they want.

MPlayer would have to look for both files, but that would
allow for simply decompressing distributions over top of an
existing install without losing all one's settings.

LiveForIt, thanks for all your work on MPlayer thus far!
I'm looking forward to seeing what more you and feanor and
all can do with it and more then happy to support your
efforts with the bounty.

Thanks,

PJS

AmiSSL status?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

Hi guys,

As we all know, our old AmiSSL died on the rocks of the
various SSL bugs revealed over the last year.

This has killed any HTTPS:// browsing in IBrowse, secure
mail access in YAM and more.

From time to time I hear sporadic rumors that someone
might still be working on AmiSSL and that we might see
an update.

There's a sourceforge page on AmiSSL:

http://sourceforge.net/projects/amissl/

But it doesn't look like any files there have been
updated in 2-1/2 years.

Anyone know of something concrete happening? Is there
a light at the end of this tunnel?

Thanks,

PJS

Yes, that's largely the intent of this year's "Programming Jam",
to be more free-form during the AmiWest days and work more on
the code & questions each participant wants to work on.

Coding and Sketching with Andy at AmiWest 2014...
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

For the last several years a few Friends of AmiWest have sponsored
bringing an AmigaOS developer to each year's show for software
presentations and to help users through the programming days.

For the last two years we've been glad to have been joined by Mr. Lyle
Hazelwood - the developer of Score, maintainer of the newest AmigaOS
versions of Bars & Pipes, the camd.library, SoftSyn and AmigaOS developer.

This year we're very proud to announce we've collected the funds and
arranged to bring the Amiga developer Mr. Andy Broad from the UK to
AmiWest!

Most of you may recognize him as the originator of the new Sketchblock
paint program. But Andy's prolific coding efforts include maintaining the
AWeb browser, the AmigaOS Blender port, AOrganizer, a port of the Perl
language and dozens of other applications.

http://www.broad.ology.org.uk

Here's to hoping some of his coding experience rubs off on us during the
2014 AmiWest Programming Jam! We also look to seeing his AmiWest
demonstrations of Sketchblock and maybe even his latest (still secret)
development project.

See you at AmiWest!

Thanks,

PJS

Another donation made... Hope it makes you even happier,
Orgin. ;)

Gotta be happier than trying to use PayPal in the US.

Clearly the PayPal web weasels/coding monkeys have
"improved" their site to the point it no longer works in
Oddessey nor OWB... It barely worked in Timberwolf.

I can't wait till we get some realistic alternative.

Thanks for all your work Orgin!

Re: Which classic software on os4?

Not too shy to talk

Hi,

I still use FinalWriter97, TurboCalc, ImageFX 4.5 and
PicView since we haven't seen native replacements.

One day I hope to switch to LibreOffice and Sketchblock.
;)

I still use the 68k version of Pagestream4 since the dev
has been too busy playing with his ducks and rats to
work on fixing the native versions I paid for. :(

c'est la vie,

YAM unable to download large messages?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

So I had been using a stable old YAM version but recently
started running into problems with downloading today's
bigger messages (now routinely top 10MB these days. So I
upgraded to v2.8p1 and it seems have the same
shortcomings...

When it hits a 10-20MB, the message download most often
dies between 4-9MB's with this message:

------------------------------------------------
Bad response from mail server '<MY ISP>' of account
'<YAM NICKNAME OF MY ACCT' to
command 'RETR':

The mail server couldn't execute the command and
replied with the above error message.

(06/02/2014 12:25 AM)
------------------------------------------------

Not finding anything in YAM's settings to help this
(buffer sizes, timeouts, etc??), I tried increasing YAM's
stack from 32KB (its default) to 15MB. That seemed to
make the likelihood of success slightly higher, but
not by much.

Anyone else encounter these kinds of YAM failures?

Any ideas whether the later builds fixed this problem?

Thanks,

PJS

Re: Basilisk 1.0 beta testing
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

Hi jabirulo,

I'm wondering if you might have any insight into what
happens if MacOS tries to access its "modem" or "printer"
serial ports?

I've been trying to follow and isolate this "Error 28"
app crash I've been encountering. I suspected it might
have something to do with the MacOS config, so I've been
go through a bunch of the control panels.

Indeed I found if Appletalk was turned on and I happened
to switch the mode to "Modem port" (instead of ethernet,
for example), then I encountered the same "Error 28"
problem.

Checking Basilisk's settings, the modem port is just its
default "serial.device".

Would there be any way to make it so the entire port
connection could be faked within Basilisk (as if there
was nothing connected) and we could just avoid touching
any devices on the Amiga side?

Please let me know if you have any ideas.

Thanks!

Re: Mplayer Altivec test version for G4 and PA6T-1682M
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@LiveForIt

Hi,

First, let me add my thanks for your (and everyone's)
efforts with these new MPlayer releases!

Second, I tried the latest v5.1 builds on my X1K with the
stock 4650 gfx card. With or without the altivec version
I was able to play this x720 video at 100% speed (according
to the -benchmark output):

The_World_Outside_My_Window_-_Time_Lapse_of_Earth_from_the_ISS
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GOAEIMx39-w

But I did encounter another pair of bugs related to pausing
a playing video (hitting the space bar).

Playing in a window on a "normal" 1920x1200 screen, if I
hit the space bar, the window contents turn gray.

Playing in a window on my usual 2560x1200 autoscrolling
screen, the video freezes and the image shifts down and to
the right of the window, like this:

http://www.pjsa.net/paused-grab.jpg

Here's a shot of what that stretch of video should look
like:

http://www.pjsa.net/playing-grab.jpg

OTOH, If I play the video in full screen mode. then pausing
seems to mostly work OK.

FWIW, this is happening on a beta X1K.

Thanks,

PJS

Re: x1000 CFE small beginners problems
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@djnick

Page 14 of the FirmwareBootingGuide on the X1K CD gives
you what the the default CFE variables should be. That
presumes the hard drive and optical are connected in the
places they were when shipped.

Who knows how much that X1K got voxxed up?

Obviously, you should confirm your CFE vars match.

You can print out the CFE vars in the OS4 shell with the
NVGetVar command.

If you want to deviate with your drive connections, you
will have to change the CFE variables accordingly.

Good luck,

PJS

PS - Here's hoping that now with an X1000 you might start
using an Amiga to create conent.

Re: Atheros WLAN driver success/failures

@utri007

Yes, the AmigaKit wifi card works in my SAM440mini.

Unfortunately, the card seems to be sensitive to networks
in my experience. In some cases it seems to die after a
while (0:30-4:00 hours) while in other cases it runs fine.

Granted, my card has not had its BIOS updated yet. With
the update, this issue may go away.

@spotUP & all,

I found the HOME global variable and a few other things
should be set in your User-StartUp for SSH to work best.

Just add and edit these lines as needed:

;BEGIN SSH
path <PATH TO YOUR SSH INSTALL DIR> ADD
setenv HOME Internet:OpenSSH/
setenv USER <YOUR ACCOUNT'S USER NAME>
setenv TERM amiga-8bit
;END SSH

Good luck,

Re: Microsloth winmail.dat (TNEF) file decoding?

Not too shy to talk

@salass00

Thanks,

I tried the new version and didn't have much better luck
with it, but at least it stopped asking me for non-existent
paths.

Again I tried decoding the problematic winmail.dat files
and I got no output from the "ytnef" program.

OTOH the "ytenfprint" program continues to print out the
.ics file that seems to be embedded by M$ in the
winmail.dat file (only gmail's webmail engine seems to
decode it).

Thanks,

Re: Sam440ep video output question

@trixie

Just guessing... I'm wondering whether the signal coming
out of your SAM could somehow be out of range or otherwise
incompatible with what your monitor wants from VGA.

Have you tried setting your SAM to very conservative and
manual screenmode (800x600? no DDC?) and see if that will
display via VGA?

If you can get it working, then you can test your way into
more agressive modes.

Good luck,

Re: Microsloth winmail.dat (TNEF) file decoding?
Not too shy to talk
Not too shy to talk

@salass00

Thank you very much for the ports!

I tried both. Both appeared to run fine (no visits from
the GR :) ), but had mixed luck getting past that.

It must just be my lack of experience with *nix command
syntax, I can only get tnef to print help and "save-body".
I wasn't able to get tnef to list file contents or show
header contents (?). Here's a excerpt of all the commands
I entered in the shell (in the dir with tnef & the file):

11.RAM Disk:tnef-test> ls
tnef winmail.dat
11.RAM Disk:tnef-test> tnef -t winmail.dat
11.RAM Disk:tnef-test> tnef --list winmail.dat
11.RAM Disk:tnef-test> tnef -t --list winmail.dat
11.RAM Disk:tnef-test> tnef --list-with-mime-types winmail.dat
11.RAM Disk:tnef-test> tnef -w winmail.dat
11.RAM Disk:tnef-test> tnef --interactive winmail.dat
11.RAM Disk:tnef-test> ls
tnef winmail.dat

As you see, every variation had no output.

As for ytnef, it also ran and its syntax wasn't all that
much better. Using the example command line they gave...

ytnef -F -f . winmail.dat

...it appears to be trying to use *nix path formatting so I
was never able to export the files. I did get a lot of
Assign requesters looking for "./FW:". ;)

On the other hand, the ytnefprint program did finally show
what has been missing from before... I think Outlook must
be hiding the "invite" contents in the header (?) of the
windmail.dat file, and ytnefprint prints out that info.
A small victory.

Thanks again!
