Re: wireless networking

@billt

Well, sure, but you can stick in an external wireless gaming adapter and there is your wireless for about $100 or less.

http://www.amazon.com/Cisco-Linksys-W ... ing-Adapter/dp/B00009X6DT

I actually use one of these in my second bedroom to get my Amiga 4000's connected and it works very well and I don't even have to think about it once it's initially configured.

@billt

Although a more robust wireless feature set would be nice, I don't see this as a priority since we have no portable Amiga.

I think there are many other things that should come before this.

Just as a comparison, my Amiga 4000 pulls 70 watts maximum, if CPU(s) at 100%. Idle pulls 55-59 watts.

A4000/CS PPC/Mediator/Voodoo 3/ZorRAM/Deneb/Indivision.

I'm not including the monitor here, just the computer itself.

@Sveta

Did you hook up a serial cable and see what exactly the output is?

in your startup-sequence, where the line c:bootloader is, add this:

c:bootloader COMMANDLINE="debuglevel=10 serial"

note that this will slow down the machine because of all the serial output. You could try debuglevel=5 for a bit less output and a bit faster response.

@Daedalus

North of 1500 technically has no upper limit, however, if it was going to be more than 2000, he probably would have said "North of 2000".

But, technically and grammatically speaking, there is no upper limit on his statement :)

*LOL*

It could be 1501 or more, but probably less than 2000!

Re: Are you a MICROA1 Owner?

@nubechecorre

It was mostly the case that the entire line was supported as long as was possible, as such you can could buy and put OS 3.1 ROMS even in your A600.

Commodore was very good at supporting the entire range of machines, at the time.

However, we don't have the resources of Commodore anymore, and key players from the AmigaOne era are no longer around, (Eyetech, Adam, MAI, etc....) so much of the expertise to solve the MicroA1 issue is no longer possible.

Hyperion is the only entity remaining, and obviously they are focused on other things such as X1000 and SAM, and don't have time (and maybe the expertise) to troubleshoot and fix weird hardware/uboot issue that prevents USB and DMA working with a PCI gfx card on the micro.

I am happy we have had support as long as we have had it with the A1 and even classic, and hopefully they will have the time to support the entire range still, even if some features are not available on all models.

I think you will continue to be able to run OS 4.1.x on your micro, and perhaps SAM, and X1000, and who knows, maybe even classic. No one said anything about cutting off OS support.

The micro is a specific case of a hardware issue whereby you can only use the onboard graphics. It sucks (since I own a micro myself), but at least we can still run the latest OS on it, albeit with limited gfx memory.

Of course I care for them properly, keep them clean and cool. ;)

@Elwood

Its not uncommon for LCD monitor's to report incorrect DDC information.

I would have thought a Samsung would be ok, and only cheap chinese "brands" more likely to be wrong, but I guess not.

ZorRam - new memory board for Zorro 3

Just popping in

This isn't specifically for OS4, but it could be of interest to OS4 classic users:

check this out:

http://www.a1k.org/forum/showthread.php?t=21012

Quoted (and translated from German) from A1K.org by Michael Boehmer:

"This card provides a common OEM development of individual computers and on behalf of, E3B amigakit.com (Mathew Leaman) dar. The Zorro III E3B know-how comes from, as the circuit board layout and the extremely slim-SDRAM controller, the know-how comes from individual computers on SDRAM and the manufacturing experience for a high-quality production of the cards at the same time an attractive retail price.

The card (project name "ZorRAM") will be available exclusively at amigakit.

The technical data in brief:

- compact Zorro III card (130x55 mm ^ 2)
- Four-layer PCB
- 128MB or 256MB of fast SDRAM (soldered)
- real 32bit design
- Full support for Autoconfig
- RAM is automatically integrated into the system
- RAM can be "manually" integrated addme /
- low power design
- slender, but faster FPGA for interfacing to Zorro III
- no Zorro II support (makes no sense at 8MB address space) "

Have patience, young padawan learner :)

I am sure all the information will be released when it's ready. I don't think they are artificially holding anything back. There would be no reason for that, other than perhaps competitive reasons.

@nicholastaylor

Well you should start by having an understanding of programming on the Amiga. It would not hurt to start with the Rom kernel reference manuals, or "RKM's" (which you can find online if you are saavy enough, then start looking at some example code, trying to compile small things.

Next up would be to look at the OS 4.1 SDK, 53.20, which was just recently released on Hyperion's website.

@JosDuchIt

Ok for Remote Desktop you _must_ have a password for the account.

The other place to check is by right clicking "My Computer", going to "Properties", then click the "Remote" tab and you will be able to see which users have access. At the bottom of that window it will say "xxxx user already has access" or something similar.

You can add users too in there.

@JosDuchIt

You can quit via the start menu, there is a disconnect option.

The registered version of Remote Desktop has a connection bar which, if you hover the mouse near the top-centre of the remote desktop window, will pull down options, including a close option.

The free version doesn't have this.

But you can disconnect from it using the Windows start menu.
