To remove the SII card requires a new UBoot configuration file though. ISTR, back towards the end of 2006, when the SAM came into existence: in OS4 Final there was a change to the VIA ide name -- "a1ide.device". So my UBoot configuration should show this ide device name. Yes/No?

Would you happen to remember how internal VIA ide was configured in UBoot? I don't have any old clear Files. Wait, October, 2007 shows some 'a1ide' references.

Well, I'll need to type back-in a new configuration and was thinking of this:

Doesn't stop on a black screen; the kickstart screen is still showing the last cursor location after the progress bar. That kind of means it isn't switching into the OS I would think!

Trying another graphic card maybe.
The A1 originally came with a PowerColor ATI 7000 AGP. I pulled the 9250 PCI and installed the 7000 AGP. USB ports 0/1 and 2/3 are set to off. Doesn't change a thing!!!!!
Therefore it's something in the MOBO. Yes/No ?

OK, without blowing-up the forum with deeper thinking (OMG!), is it possible that NON VOLITILE ram is not working? In other words, I lost the IO vector to switch into the OS. Yes/No? BTW, where is nvram located? It can't be in UBoot; that's ROM or is it?

Do you all see what I'm trying see: what's causing the hang?

Merry Christmas!

This Christmas morning I thought I give the A1-XE/G4 another look. Went off-line in August and wasn't sure about what was wrong. Here's my A1's problem:
It will get to the end of loading the kickstart progress bar and end with that screen graphics and a blinking cursor. It doesn't matter if it's booting HD or CD. That's it!
Anyone experience this behavior?

If it's not switching into the OS after KS then what is it? The only thing that's master switch is UBoot rom chip. Yes/No? Or is it something that UBoot switches ON in the MOBO that isn't switching in the OS? I would appreciate any thoughts. (I'm using an Adaptec sii0680ide on a stock A1-XE/G4/800Mhz/256MB/9250PCI)

That's happened so many times here... I run prgs from Ram Disk before storing them. When you delete the program, you get the error.

It means that a program has still locked a file/directoy.

Could it be just a behavior of Ram Disk? That's where it occurs; never saw the error anywhere else.

Surely sed will use \t for tabs? Doesn't it use Perl-style regular expressions?
ABC shell uses all the commands from "Bash" doesn't it! Best formatting text processing language is AWK.

About five months for me, since the A1 died. I got to play with it since 2003. Someday I'll may get another one.

Years ago, i went with a IOGEAR KVM PS2 cable set. (USB was always a 'iffy' subject) Worked great for a Dell Optiplex GX280/XP and the A1-XE/G4. However it doesn't work with the Dell GX620/VISTA.

Isn't there a 'button' shaped battery on the mobo? The A1 uses a 2032-3 volt battery. They're not rechargeable; replace it with a new one...Really?

I have no idea about the µA1, but FYI... Years ago I ran into a problem with A1 and used the A1200 for help in debugging! I used Term 4.8 and a Radio Shack Null-Modem. Connection: A1 serial port 1 ==> null modem==> serial A1200

I changed the kicklayout to load the kernel.debug file.
You have to use the first serial port or it won't work. The port is internally pre-set ISTR for output.

Still no luck

Forget luck; get signals! Does the SAM use a battery? If the battery on the A1 is low the bootup is a black screen. Uboot needs a signal to switch in the video interface.

I remember that! Back in 2003, the A1 was shipped with that ROM. I had to buy a new one from my dealer, CompuQuick in Ohio. It was the same 1.0.0 version, but a writetable/flashable ROM. Yuk, for the A1 Linux box...
When OS4 'pre-release' in July 2004 came, the UBoot had to updated to 1.1.0 to install OS4 Pre., ISTR. Official OS4 release in 2005 bumped it up to 1.1.1.

All you need is writeable/flashable ROM before updating UBoot to version 1.1.1

No other emulator includes mechanical noises, and I see no need for it.
I don't know there-'Amigans Defender'-
All computers had fans and floppies and noise, but Amiga was the one and only that had the track disk device. That noise is kind of a trade mark itself; or did I miss a click here!!!!
