Re: What are the top apps/utilities/games for OS4?

@jahc

Hehe, I'm with Kicko here. Sun is overrated and bad for your skin, so get to work

BTW#1, I really like SabreMSN, just waiting for filetransfer, avatar support, animated emoticons, video and audio support, nudges and.... Nah, filetransfer should suffice (for now).

BTW#2, that image on your website freaks me out everytime.

@Amigamancer

If you're into astronomy then Digital Universe v1.5 comes highly recommended (http://www.digitaluniverse.org.uk/)

Also on my list of OS4-only SW, as others also have mentioned, are:
DVPlayer - Best video player ever on the Amiga!
Epistula - Multiprotocol messenger client. Still lacking some features but getting there.
SabreMSN - Same as above but focusing only on MSN.
Amiphoto - I use this to manage and view pics taken with my digital camera.
AmiDVD - Great for burning files to a DVD.
TuneNet - Music player with a *lot* of plugins + Internet radio support (shoutcast style)
Cygnix X11 - Opening a new world of apps from Unix/Linux.
WW2 - An Axis & Allies clone. Great potensial, and I rule when I get to play Germany.
Wet - Everybody talks about the weather. Now you can watch it on your Amiga.
Transmission - Fast and easy to use torrent downloader. Has some problems with SFS partitions though.
CPUTemp Docky - A nice little docky that shows CPU usage, CPU temperature and as a bonus; the time.

Apologies to the creators of everything else I've forgotten...

edit: Ah, how could I forget TFB?! - Hours of fun for both kids and adults!

@Swisso

I'm crunching for Team Amiga mostly whenever my A1 is on. Currently in 2572nd place in the OGR effort. My xp machine is also set up to crunch for TA, but it's hardly turned on these days, and then mostly for internet banking (darn Java). I made the mistake of "upgrading" to Norton Internet Security 2008 and the computer became sluggisher than ever. Oh yeah, the A1 is my main computer now!
Anyways, why is this topic in "Too hot to handle" btw? I can't imagine the topic attracting that much heated argumentation

Re: Some observations for Transmission v1.0 w/GUI

@sundown

Excellent observation sundown!
I've also experienced stability issues with Transmission (both GUI and GUI-less versions). It used to just stop down/uploading and becoming unresponsive after a varying amount of time.
Based on your advice I created an FFS2 partition and used that as a download partition for Transmission for some heavy testing. And lo and behold: Not a single interrupted download! I've tested with filesizes of several houndred MBs and also multiple downloads. Stable as heck! I also get very good speed out of it (peaked at 250 KB/s on my 4Mb/s ADSL line).

That said, I've always found SFS to be reliable and stable so I doubt this is SFS's fault (unqualified guess).

Thanks a lot for your advice!

Edit: Tried with an SFS2 partition as well. Unfortunately the same problem as SFS.

Cool to hear you were present in the court room.
I wonder, could this be material for DiscreetFX's next movie project?

Thanks a ton for your hard work J?rg!
You can test it with OWB 1.13 now.
But on www.vg.no OWB is still very slow, unless you disable JavaScript.

It works!
With Javascript enabled I get a CPU usage varying between approx. 50-80% after the main page is loaded, but the speed is still acceptable.
With Javascript disabled it's faaast!!

A big thank you to our one-man-coding-machine!

@orgin

If I ever somehow happen to get in trouble with US law I'd for sure hire William A. Kinsel to represent me. After reading his depositions I get the impression he's one helluva lawyer.

I've fixed the fonts related infinite loop bug of OWB (www.vg.no, several wikipedia.org pages, etc.) now, but I can't fix all OWB bugs myself, "just" porting it to AmigaOS4 is more than enough work already

@Skov

I guess the easiest thing to do is to start the UBoot prefs program from Workbench (Prefs/UBoot) and change the "Boota" value to your liking (under the "Boot" tab).
The value can also be changed if you enter the UBoot menu during startup, but I don't remember the exact location right now.

@abalaban

Thank you, thank you, thank you!
I've been trying to understand why the stream-amplifier arexx-script from OS4depot had stopped working. When called from IBrowse it made a copy of the IBrowse folder in a new folder named .pls in the IBrowse directory.
I replaced RX with the one from pre3, and hey presto, it worked again!
