Re: Strange AHI problems with OS4.1 and SAM

@tomsoniq

AHI6 is OpenSource. Find more information at http://arp2.berlios.de/ahi/. If there is a general bug in AHI causing this static noise you should be able to find it.

No. -Wall implies many, but not (as the name might suggest) all possible warnings. Just take a look at gcc's manual to inform yourself about the individual options.

I downloaded zlibrary and tried to unarchive it, it came up with this error message:
Quote:
Extracting from archive 'zlibrary.lha':
*** Error on file 'README' : Unknown compression (need newer LhA version)
WARNING: Skipping corrupt/extraneous data
1 file extracted, 1 file failed.

Operation not entirely successful.

I checked the date on my LHA and it was 23-Sep-04 22:16:08. So I checked to see if there was a new LHA and there was. The date on that one is (when you decompress it) 13-Mar-06 22:27:18. It however gives the SAME error message. So I redownloaded zlibrary.lha and tried again. Same error message. "zlib" doesn't seem to be the same library, as there's no file in the archive titled "z.library".

So, I'm stuck with the undeciphered ISO.

That archive was most probably created on a Linux machine where in fact exists a more recent version of LhA than is available for AmigaOS. Try to extract the archive with Unarc, that one should be able to handle the improved compression algorithm.

Yes, there must be NO PPC native FileSystems in the RDB, hence SYS:Kickstart is the only place.

Before installing OS4.1 onto a new harddrive (the old one had bad blocks) I made backups of some programs and games. After installing OS4.1 I unarchived these using "lha" (I didn't use UnArc since it kept crashing on some of the larger archives). In this case I had to reset the executable flags on all executables since they had been unset.

With OS4.1 I also have to use "protect +e" to set the executable flag on any programs I compile with VBCC.

No, that very much depends on which platform the LhA archive has been created. Lots of archives today are created on a Linux system, which doesn't know anything about AmigaOS' protection bits. Hence the Amiga LhA is unable to restore the E bit because the archive doesn't contain any information about it. Only archives created on Amiga will contain all Amiga relevant informations (protection bits, comments, etc).

If you list the archives contents with "lha vv" instead of "lha v" you will see the host type which created the single files within the archive. "Unknown" or "Linux/Unix" host archives will most probably not contain any Amiga specific informations.

If i remember correctly the Author of that tv-card driver needs AllocVecTags() for DMA-Buffers, it is not in current SDK. The full set of 64bit DOS functions would be nice too.

A fully up-to-date SDK is really nice to have, but what exactly stops you from starting a new project? Even if you currently cannot use the 64bit API of DOS, why not just use the existing functions, set everything up for 64bit file sizes (if that is really necessary), and at the time the updated SDK is released modify your code to use the new functions? So many people are constantly telling that they could start a project only with the latest unreleased SDK. Why? Ok, AllocVecTags() is a central function, no DMA capable driver is possible without it. But what else is absolutely impossible with the current SDK?

The write window has recently been replaced by an own MUI sub class and hence the identifier MUI uses to find saved window positions had to be changed. Just snapshot the window at the desired position and everything will be fine.

What do you mean with this? After have written a new mail you can mark more than i.e. 2 messages, press Delete and you are not asked for confirmation? Sorry, but neither I know what you want to say nor am I able to reproduce this behaviour (or what I think you wanted to say). Please be a bit more specific about this problem. And if you really think it is a bug, then please open a new bug report at YAM's bugtracker and provide a step by step explanation how to reproduce it. Also refer to YAM's support site for more information.

@Swoop

This instruction caused the crash:
lbz r0,108(r17)

And both r0 and r17 are NULL at that time, altough only r17 is the guilty one. The program is simply accessing a NULL pointer. A simple beginners fault: a missing NULL pointer check. But the bug is not in newlib.library, but in the torrent client, passing a NULL argument to vfprintf().

@tonyw

YAM will set the stack size to 65536 internally by using the usual $STACK cookie and by setting various clib depending __stack variables, so any value specified by the ToolTypes will be ignored. For me this stack size never caused any problems.

@kvasir

Taglines are often famous comments from celebrities inserted right above your own signature as a kind of "famous last words". Nothing that is really required.

My .taglines file looks like this:

1st tagline
%%
2nd tagline
%%
3rd tagline
%%
.....

The separator is set to "%%". Whenever this .taglines file is modified YAM will parse it again, looking for "%%" and eventually creating .taglines.hsh for fast lookup of random taglines.

Since MamePPC most probably instructed YAM to start a new mail upon every start and the path to his .tagline file was somehow messed up or didn't even exist (and hence the path for .tagline.hsh) the two error messages occured every time. I think that's the explanation for the problems.

@MamePPCA1

Check the ToolTypes of YAM's icon. Make sure that the ToolTypes MAILTO, SUBJECT, LETTER and ATTACH don't occur there or are commented out. Otherwise YAM will start to write a new mail every time you start it.

@MamePPCA1

Well, if YAM says "Couldn't read from file 'foobar'. The file doesn't seem to exist.", what would you guess could be the reason for this?

You instructed YAM to insert a random tagline at the bottom of each new mail. Check your configuration if your signature contains the sequence "%t". If yes, then make sure that the "Tagline file" really exists and contains taglines separated by "Tagline separator".

If you don't want any taglines at all then just remove that "%t" from your signature.

The file "taglines.hsh" will be recreated whenever the file "taglines" has been modified.

@Framiga

Everything which could influence authentication is on the same config page as server, port number, password, etc. Otherwise the different pages of the config window wouldn't make any sense.

The authentication mainly consists of user name, password and authentication protocoll. If any of these is wrong or unsupported there will be an error message.

@MamePPCA1:

Please run YAM from shell with the DEBUG option and try to receive and send some mails. Post the resulting log here, but make sure to strip any private data (user name, password, etc)!!!

The account name has absolutely no impact on the mail transfer. It is just a name, which is displayed in the menus and in the transfer window. But nothing of this name is transmitted to any server.

Having a YAM: assign or not should be no problem. At least YAM itself does no longer need this assign. It could be a problem if something in your configuration or some somewhere else still accesses the YAM: assign.

@MamePPCA1

If you are not using SMTP-AUTH you must most probably first receive mails from the POP3 server. This will authenticate yourself against the server for a "short" time (i.e. 10 minutes). Only then you can send mails to the SMTP server, even without explicit authentication during that operation. Until web.de eventually enabled SMTP-AUTH I had to do things exactly like this.

The error message "authentication required for mail submission" explicitly states that you have an authentication problem.

Re: Some questions regarding OS4 for Classic Amigas
Just popping in

@R-TEAM

Well, if you want full and decent SCSI support so badly, then the answer is quite simple:

Sit down on your a** and start developing!!

Just "wanting" and "demanding" is not enough nowadays. If you want something being available and nobody else is able or motivated enough to do it, then the consequence must be to either do it yourself or to stick with what you have.

The ability of MOS to use the SCSI hardware is quite different. The core MOS developers had access to the source code and could use it for free (I think, I don't know). But this does not apply for the OS4 team. And if OS4 would be delayed even further or cost the double amount just because of SCSI support for much less users than the number of OS4 (classic) users in general, the majority would be even more upset.

Sorry, but I don't read amigans.net too regularly. BillE's suggestion is quite good.

Next time please visit http://forum.yam.ch/ and ask the questions regarding YAM there. I think lots of other users are interested in such topics as well.

http://faq.yam.ch/ is also a good location to look for questions answered lots of times already.

@salass00

I would really appreciate a port of web2c. I wrote my diploma thesis completely in LaTeX, but compiling it on my old A4000/060 was a real pain. The MiKTeX distribution on a 2.4GHz Pentium machine performed much better. It's really a pitty that PasTeX is absolutely outdated.

All in all TeX documents look so *MUCH* better than any other word processor's output.
